This may be a dumb question, but I just got a 2003 R1150R, and when winterizing, I put Sta-Bil in the tank and tried to top it off with gas. Before I could see the level of gas in the tank, fuel from the overflow tube started leaking on the garage floor. Not a big deal, but is this going to happen every time I re-fuel? Or is there a check valve not functioning? Just joined the BMOA and love the forum. Rode a cruiser for years, and now am looking forward to warm weather to have some fun with the R.
Thanks

definitely not normal, how much gas were you able to put in before this occurred?

There are rubber hoses (vent and drain) inside the tank that connect the stub pipes inside the tank to the stub pipes on the fuel pump plate. If a hose deteriorates or a clamp is loose then fuel enters the hose inside the tank and either fills the charcoal canister or drains to the ground.
That is the likely source of your problem. The only fix is to check the integrity of the hoses up at the filler cap and down at the pump plate. Start at the pump plate - that is your most likely source given the fuel level at which it occurs.

i should be more confident in these things. that's where i was going, but i like to ask questions first as to not look dumb suggesting something out of line right off the bat, hahaha.

Thanks for the input. I tore into it yesterday, no lines kinked, but realized when I filled it, there was significant "sloshing" and the overflow was just fuel going into the small chanel around the filler opening, and going down that tube. I feel like an idiot, but thanks to you guys, I am now much more falmiliar with the fuel system, which is a good thing. Thanks again.
