View Full Version : Techlusion R259 Settings

I installed an R259 on my 03 Rt and I'm interested in knowing if most people that have an R259 are using recommended pot settings from the factory or have tweaked them to another setting.
If you are using your own settings, what are they?
I used a multimeter to set my pots.
Thanks in advance

There have been a couple of techlusion posts. I think if you poke around a little, you'll find them via the search tools. There's a guy that was involved in them that seemed to know a ton about how they worked and how to set them. If you post, it'll send him an email that a message has posted to that thread and he should come back with some answers.

I have gone through a rather lenghtly adjustment period using the R-259 on my '01 R1150GS. In the beginning, I followed the setting recomendations that came with the product and noticed a significant performance improvement. (I did this install in conjunction with a Y-pipe installation using the stock BMW silencer.) I too used a very high quality HP digital voltmeter to insure careful initial installation. After a short while, I noticed a significant reduction in fuel economy, and carbon emiting from the tail pipe, and then carbon build up in the engine; as evidenced by plug color and a distinct tendency to "knock" when the air temp was high or the engine was hot.
this lead me to look into further refinement of the R-259 adjustment to reduce the fuel to air ratio; while still enjoying the elimination of the surging and good performance. Over the last 15,000 miles and 9 months, I have learned that there is a lot of "reduction" to do to get where you get VERY GOOD operation....
About a month ago, I did a 4th round of "fine" tuning to the following levels: the green Pot is now down to 0.3 volts; the Yellow Pot is down to 0.4 volts, the Red Pot is down to 0.4 volts and the Crusie Pot is down to 1.2 volts. These are all at 1/3 or less of the
"recommended" settings and the bike is running better than it ever has. It is smoother, it has no backfire, it is "gentle" in it's throttle response, it is getting better gas mileage, it has no engine knock and I couldn't be happier with it's performance.
I have ended up at this "point of adjustment" after, 1) learning that the R-259 ONLY adds fuel to the original Motronic fuel "map", 2) learned that the factory setting is basically a "dragster" set up for initial performance optimization, 3) read from the felllow that Dave references above that maybe the R-259 ONLY needs added fuel in the CRUISE mode, and 4) I have now gone through four rounds of reduction looking for the BEST setting positions. NOTE: I have not tried to ZERO any of the 4 Pots to see if they are not needed at all....maybe this would b ethe best; instead, I have simply reduced them in increments and then rode the bike in all sorts of conditions to see how it worked. So far, for me, the current settings above ar ethe best I have found. I have not had a good chance to really TEST these settings for gas mileage with any precision, I just know it's better, again, than the last settings were. I tend to get on the throttle in the twisties, therefore it's hard to get an accurate assessment from tank to tank because I rarely ride the same roads twice in a row. I just want ot get 40+ mpg on long trips; and I'm sure that I will with the current settings.....since the effect of the reduced voltage setting has to be linear and I've reduced the voltages so much.
I hope this helps you with your new toy.

Okay, JimBud, I was a fool not to let you tweak the R1150RGS last summer.
You CLEARLY DO know what you're doing!
FORGIVE MEEEEEEEE!

Actually, I know a lot more now....but I'm probably a bit slower too...it's the affect from all the sun light out here....are you riding to SPOKANE.....??
Oh, by the way...ya still wearing the spurs???

I was so happy that the R159 Techlusion was making my ride rideable that I haven't changed the settings from stock. For the last two years!
Afraid the only was was down.

03 RT1150-I used recommende settings EXCEPT for the cruise mode pot which I adjusted to the absolute maximum(just before the light comes on) and am very pleased with the results!

Hal, can I ask what is your typical fuel mileage with those settings?

J-I just did this perhaps 125 miles ago.I will be filling up this week and I will report back with results.

36 mpg:eek

36 MPG? You be runnin' seriously rich, bro. Do keep an eye on yo' sparkin' plugs, and please let us know how much soot you be blowin' in the wind.....:D No, but seriously, will you now start the process of lowering the pot voltages across the board until you find the optimum settings, or are you just gonna let it wail? Pls tell all. :idea

I only have 3700 miles on my bike and I usually ride at ,shall we say,a spirited clip!If I ease up a bit and motor at a bit more civilized pace methinks I could perchance eke out another mile or two per gallon....but she sure is fat and happy right now.................:p

Hal, me fears the following will happen to your bike the way you are running it. Right now, it's like a hot rod...a little twist of the grip gives you a lot of GO... and at first it's fun, but if you continue this way, as I did, the carbon will build up from the rich mixture and you will start to have Pinging issues from the big-time carbon build up, and since this is happening with a richened mixture, there is no escaping it by running still richer. So, I sugest that you adjust it leaner sooner rather than later and get into a better running condition that can be maintined long term.....
I have had to go to the water torture to clean up the combustion chamber, do the immediate oil change, put in new plugs and then go through the process of adjusting the R259 to a less rich state of tune......and I like the performance better...

Aw shucks, ya'll done gone and ruint my day!I guess I better go pull dem sparkies and take a wee peek.I run Redline S1 fuel conditioner with my Chevron Techron fuel and I plan to run a bottle of Techron thru the bike prior to my 3000 mile oil changes in an attempt to ward off the carbon barnacles...........

I installed my Techlusion259 after the Charleston (ick) Rally, and have run with the factory settings. The surge went away, and I actually picked up 2 or 3 MPG in mixed riding. Currently I'm getting a pretty consistent 44-45 on the highway at speed. No plans to change anything here. We all know however, some BMW people LIVE to tinker.
Of course YMMD.
