Got the tranny off today. Splines are 100% condition and covered with a black, tacky paste. I didnt think the factory lubed them.

The previous owner was not big on PM, so I'm wondering how the splines got lubed.

Is there ANYTHING else I should R&R while it is apart?

The end of the pushrod is scored on the clutch end. And the pushrod could not be removed till the tranny came off and then it bent a tiny bit, it was really stuck on the pressure plate. A new pushrod is on order.

Black tacky paste sounds like either moly or Wurth-3000... or a blend of the two. This bike wasn't formerly owned by Paul Glaves right? (That's his favorite mix I believe..)

The lube doesn't sound like the usual factory stuff - so someone was in there. Perhaps there was a seal leak fixed under warranty and it was done by a good mechanic..

If your mileage is anywhere near about 80,000, I'd consider doing a clutch replacement now. Use the BMW clutch kit and get all the right parts. Believe me (as I know this from experience), do not go cheap and only replace the clutch friction disc. If not, you WILL be taking it apart again in maybe 40,000 miles, tops.

Not quite 30,000 miles. But good to know about not replacing the clutch disk alone.

Carefully examine the center hole in the diaphragm spring - where the clutch rod got stuck. Usually if the end of the rod has been damaged so has the spring - which may quickly damage a new clutch rod once installed. Also carefully check the throwout bearing at the back of the transmission (back end of clutch rod). If the clutch rod has "pencil sharpened" into the spring center there is a good possibility that it was caused by a less than perfect throwout bearing assembly.

I will do that. Thanks.

Pglaves, the pushrod looks ok (on the clutch end) as does the center hole of the diaphram spring :clap The pushrod just has a slight bend from it sticking when I pulled the tranny off.

Fate had me catch this just in time... All the fluid was trapped by the felt ring and the clutch is ok.

One more question: How difficult is it to replace the tranny input seal? And do you think
I should replace the seal as simply good R&R procedures?

Thanks for your help.

Seals are pot luck. I don't generally replace seals unless there are signs of leakage. But that is me. Others replace them as a matter of course.
