According to a dealer near me, the new hexhead motor takes a different oil filter from the R11*0 engines. They also said that the special oil filter wrench was really expensive; in the vicinity of $100.00. I mean, really, what the hell could be so special about an oil filter wrench to make it cost so freaking much??????
I have no idea if they were accurate about that or not, but would be interested in reading what other dealers are saying about the subject of filter wrench cost.

Back into the problem, find out what filters will cross reference to the 1200GS filter, then what they fit on. Then call the respective car dealerships and find out if they have a special oil filter wrench to fit their application for the filter. I expect K&N will have a filter out very soon with a bolt head on the end for easy removal and installation.
Might start by looking at new 1200GS filter and see what company manufactured it. JON

Aren't oil filters built to a specific standard size?

Dunno. I have 3 different diameter oil filter "cap" wrenches in my tool box. Two different Honda sizes (one of which also fits Suzukis) and the Oilhead one. If any of them fits the new GS filter, I wll be sure to post about it.
In the meantime, though, any of you who have bought your R1200GS and are just waiting for it to come in, ask your dealer about the price of the filter wrench next time you speak with them and report back, if you would be so kind...
