picture size - too large

Is there a way to compress a picture? I have tried to upload a pic of my bike and it tells me it is too big, yet, I can load the same size pics to my avatar? help?

Making bold assumptions that you have WindowsXP or Vista and no real good photo software. This is clumsy but it works.

Go to Windows Explorer, find your pick.
Right click on Send To.
Select Mail Recipient
It asks if you want original size or smaller - Vista gives sizes, XP you can click More Options to see sizes.
Select 640x480 or 800x600.
Your mailer will pop up in compose - send it to yourself.
Save the emailed picture.
Use the saved picture.

or see suggestions in the "How Do I..." subforum about "How do i post photos"- and set up Flock/Photobucket. no more messing around, no more frustration with # of pics or size of pics. caveman easy.

moving this to "how do i..."

go download a free image viewer called "irfanview." (google it.) then open your photo in that, and then select "image" and when the pull-down menu appears, click "resize/resample." experiment with what gets you what you want.
