View Full Version : Favorite Bike Portrait

So what's a bike portrait? A picture of your bike in its environment. Could be at the side of the road or being ridden in the twisties. . . . Not a picture in your driveway, an environmental portrait.
Here's my current favorite:

While not the best picture in the da world, this is probably still my favorite picture of my favorite bike as far as the amount of fun I had with her, the fact that she got me back into riding after some years of being bike-less and the fun I had modifying her to what you see here. Its a 73 R60/5 that I put S bars and fairing on along with a Mac 2-into-1. She was one FUN ride! We did well over 80K miles together in 6 short years. Photo taken up on Skyline Drive Va at one of my favorite pull offs. I've used the same location for several other bike shots since then but this one is still tops. Dang I sure miss her...*sigh*

Riding the Dragoon June 07
I know my favorite of all time. I was headed into the sunrise on our way home from finishing the Iron Butt Rally in 2003.
I'm thinking the memories of the portrait color it even more vividly in the photographer's mind's eye.

And here's a self-portrait of me and The Beast
also on skyline drive, taken from the other side. Note: this and the one above are both scans from film. Oh, Yeah, I also changed out the rear shocks to some air shocks I found down at my mechanics shop shorty after buying her in the spring of 99.

While the story around the previous picture keeps me coming back to it, this one I just like the look and feel of, although it's partially doctored in a paint programme, the effects just add to the feeling I got at that time and in that place.

It’s not a bad place to be. We’re on a hill with a westerly view of the Helderberg “Mountains”. The sunsets prompted the former owners to name the house “Sunset Ridge”.
The wind is the only issue. I’m becoming and expert in repairing wind-damaged siding (which usually winds up in my neighbors trees along with our patio furniture and pretty much everything else), and we had to put on a hurricane strength roof. I’m actively looking into buying the lot next-door and putting up a windmill.
It’s all about the view…

This is my '82 RS, taken shortly after Dave Anderson, of Anderwerks, finished its restoration. The location is the summit of Going to the Sun Highway in Montana and I took the picture on film, with an Olympus Stylus. This was a 750 km, one day, solo shake down run, in September, and a glorious day it was.
This was a wonderful, fast, airhead, and the feature sheet on it was about 2 pages long.
And yep, I can still get into those retro sport leathers.:laugh

This makes it appear to be in much better shape, cosmetically speaking, that it really is. Wasn't intensional, just came out that way. I was shooting for location and fitting it into the idea of poem rather than it being strictly about the machine itself. Funny how that happens sometimes.

I think it's been burning since '65 or '66. I rode down the same closed section of road Bubba was on, back in October. Last estimate I heard was 250 years of fuel left. I think there is a slight concern it will burn all the way to the next town over, Ashland. It's weird being on ground that is warm even in the shade, with no bugs crawling around...

This isn't of me and the subject isn't MY bike but my bike plays a large part. This mirror shot is my favorite. It's of a buddy on a Yamaha cruiser-style bike and he's where he belongs (BEHIND my BMW) on the ride.
We were riding at Yosemite National Park in 2006, heading toward Glacier Point and enjoying a fabulous day. I'd only had the RT for a couple of weeks and my face hurt from GRINNING so much (do I love my bike?? OH YEAH!!). I looked in the mirror and realized that this was a cool setup. My camera was in my tank bag so I grabbed it out and took this shot.
I have a Throttle Rocker on the throttle control so I was able to use the heel of my hand to control the throttle while taking the picture.

I'd say it fits nicely within the forum, its a shot You took of something related to the experience of motorcycling. And yours or a part of it anyway, is in the shot, so it fits in this thread as well, definitely in its environment!
Now if I could put on my Moderators hat for a second....;)
One thing I would like to suggest to all is that we try to keep the file sizes reasonable, in so far as width is concerned, so that we don't have to scroll left-right in order to view the file and text. Remember one wide shot effects all posts on the page. if we can keep the width to say 700-800 pixels I think it would make for easier reading for all. I'm pretty sure that just about all us have a system that can handle that width. Does that sound reasonable to everyone? remember, this is Your forum! [/hat off]
As for the shot itself, well as I have stated before, I'm a real sucker for reflection shots and the clarity and framing here is superb considering the shooting conditions. Nicely done.

Nice Sabre, looks like the V45. I had one too, also an 85 but with the blue stripe. I had the sport fairing and the bags on it as well. I bough it new and rode it for 11 years, a total of 80,000 Kms. Great bike, but hard on fuel and not a big enough tank. I sold it when I bought my R1100RS.

Were all those shots in CA? That is some beautiful country-side. I gotta get out of the cities next time I go.
That's also in Nicasio, about a half mile from the church.
Nicasio's about 45 minutes outside San Francisco, in Marin County. Most of the masses don't make it out of the 101 corridor, which leaves rural riding to the rest of us. All the photos I've posted were taken within 20 minutes of our home.

Here is photo of the 2000 R110RT the next day after unloading it off the trailer.
My wife and I traveled to SC to buy it. We trailored it back to Illinois on Sunday.
During the trip back we had a flat on the trailer in Kentucky south of Paduca. A Kentucky highway patrol service truck pulled up behind us and asked if we needed any help. He removed both our trailer wheels and took me to Walmart, where we replaced them for about $160.00. The service provided by the State of Kentucky was free. We were astonished and very greatful to Kentucky for the hospitality.

This is my favorite "on the bike" shot, courtesy my friend Brad. This was early on day two of our trip to West Bend. It's heavily cropped and shopped, but it's a favorite: wonderful memory of a wonderful trip.

I was wondering the same thing when I took it, so I tried a lower perspective to get rid of the road. The fence is still an issue, I think, but the depth of field seems to keep the bike the focus.

I also tried it from a more direct perspective, but I'm not sure it's this bike's best angle.

I quite like this angle a lot since it gives a much better perspective with the lighthouse being a more pormidant feature to the image, plus you get a real sence for the curviness of the road. the blurred grass does help create a level of layering to where the fencel ines (broken down fence) (another type of depth) give the grass an extension into the images as a whole... the only thing i would do is a abit of color enhament to the sky and bring up the constrast just a touch... I like it for the white cycle with the white light house.. :thumb
for everyone... there is a good though when photographing that goes... once you have taken the picture you like (found) then it is time to start taking photos.. sometimes i have 10-20 very sutdle variations of the same image.... just to get the clouds right or the angle of the bike inthe image... then in photoshop i spend a few minutes flipping back and foth between the very similar images until i get the one i feel gives me the best sence of what i wanted to show...

could well be, the info was from another rider in the group of folks that rode in, I couldn't find the actual owner and I'm not much up on that era of HD's.
I'd have thought that most of the folks in the group would be fairly knowledgeable on these as many of the machines were vintage. but still ???
I did think that that style forks was mostly found on older machines myself. Be curious to know the year for certain.
Kool machine whatever the year.

last year of stock springer (until it's lamentable fashion-conscious resurrection) was 1947; 1948 saw the introduction of the Hydra-Glide hydraulic front end. a remarkable advancement for American motorcycle engineering, ....and only about a decade or so behind BMW :whistle.
hardtail endured until '56 or '57 (can't recall exactly), then the DuoGlide was released.
flathead motor is harder to date from afar, as it continued in production in one form or another until at least the late 60's.
regardless, a very classic look. nice pic- shooting it in b&w improves the texture and feel :thumb
