Hey:
I've been on site with few questions. I own a 94 K1100RS and just bought a 99 R1100RT (Boston Green) with 61K. You can applaud, but don't stand up.

Reasoning: 66 years on me and the ergos on the K get uncomfortable on 400mi+ days. I love the ergos on the R. I also wanted something lighter and better in the twisties than the K1100LT. I'm really looking forward to a weather break so I can pick it up and ride home.

2 questions;
Boston Green was only available in 99 (I believe) is there a way to find out how many were produced?
K's from 90 on need spline lubes at 40K intervals, is the same true for the R's?

Thanks, I like your forum very much. The K1100 Owners Group is also outstanding.

To my knowledge, the factory never specified a spline lube interval for the R bikes. Prudence (do you know her?) however, would suggest taking a look every 50k or so and cleaning/lubing at that time. Then again, I've seen 100k bikes that looked just fine with no discernable spline wear. The reason we have winter, as best I can determine, is to give us a chance to take the bikes apart and do stuff like lube splines.

John, welcome to the 'Legion of R1100RT Pilots'.

If your move from a K to an R1100 is like mine was, it will take you awhile to fully appreciate the charm of the oilhead engine.

Ergos, handling and weather protection are superb on the RT, but that engine is a bit arcane compared to the tight DOHC inline four K bike power plant.

That said, after 4 years and 53,000 miles I'm deeply enamored of my oilhead. (I bought it used with 7K on it).

As I'm sure you are aware - in order for these engines to give you their best the valves need to be meticulously adjusted and the throttle bodies balanced. It also helps to keep the rocker arm free play gap toward the narrow end of their spec. Also, clean the throttle body screws prior to balancing the throttle bodies.

Non-oem spark plugs and Techlusion fuel injection 'tuners' are widely used (I do both) but there is no strong consensus on either.

I'm getting a little long winded here - so - again, welcome!

I really like that Boston green.
