View Full Version : Make my own avatar?

Here's how to put up an avatar (that little picture under your name) that you like. It could be your club logo, it could be a picture of you on your bike, it could be a big scary fish, it's up to you.
First off - find a picture you like. I found my avatar, by doing a search at Google (http://www.google.com) for kielbasa and clicking on the tab marked images. I found lots of pictures of kielbasa.
I found one I liked and then right clicked on it. On the menu that popped up, I selected "Save Picture As" and saved the picture to my desktop.
To tell if it was too big, I highlighted the file (now living on my desktop) and right clicked. I then selected "Properties" from the menu and looked at the "Summary" tab. Be sure you have "Advanced" displayed. If you look, you'll see that Windows will show you how wide and tall the picture is in pixels.
My image was a little too large and the maximum size for an avatar is 70 x 70 pixels.
To shrink my picture to the right size, I used Irfanview, which is free and available at Irfanview.com (http://www.irfanview.com) .
In Irfanview, I opened my picture and used Image>Resize and Resample to change the size.
I then saved the picture as kbasaavatar.jpg. My avatar was ready to upload.
I then clicked on the User C.P. button at the top of the screen and went to "Edit Options". Down at the bottom of the screen is a way for you to load your own image from your computer to use as your avatar.
And now you're done. A copy of your avatar is safely living up on the Bulletin Board's server. You can keep your copy in a safe place.
If you have questions, send me an email and I'll try and get you squared away.

Centered under the column of messages is a button marked "Printable View" Click that and print it.
Jean, it looks like your avatar is still messed up.

The avatar does not exist. Yet.
Another tip on avatars and the use of irfanview, is to use the crop function to grab just a piece of a larger image (square, preferably), pull down the Edit menu and select Crop, then go about resizing it to the 70x70 pixel limit.
Step 1: Find an image you want to make an avatar out of. I like this one, but there's so much stuff in the photo, that it would look way too busy if I just resized it down to avatar size.
http://fish.smugmug.com/photos/87322/87322-Medium.jpg
Step 2: In your favorite photo editing software (irfanview, in this case), I crop down to just the doggy's face.
http://fish.smugmug.com/photos/87323/87323-Medium.jpg
Step 3: The image is just right, but it's still too big for an avatar (87 x 87), so I resized it down to 70 x70, sharpened it a little...and voila! A new doggy avatar.
http://fish.smugmug.com/photos/87324/87324-Medium.jpg
Easy and fun! :)

Just curious, the avatar size can be 70 x 70 pixels, what if the picture isn't square, can it just be a total of 2100 sq. pixels? Thanks, you are doing a great job, and I love the forums.

Thanks for the comments!
Actually, we have a maximum permissible size of 70 pixels in either direction. The can, as you can see by BradfordBenn's avatar, be animated Gifs, as long as they don't exceed the maximum filesize.
Thanks, KBasa, I'm getting it figured out. :clap

It is a little odd in the new forum system.
<hr height=1>
Avatar:
1. Open your user control panel.
2. Click on "Edit Avatar" in the menu to the left under "Settings & Options". It is the fifth link down.
3. At the bottom of the page is a section for "Custom Avatar". Click on "Choose File".
4. find the file on your computer that you wish to use. Remember, it has to be less than 70 pixels by 70 pixels and under 19.5 kb.
5. Click on "Save Changes".
6. enjoy your new avatar.
<hr height=1>
Custom User Title (text above avatar):
1. Open your user control panel.
2. Click on "Edit Profile" in the menu to the left under "Settings & Options". It is the third link down.
3. The page that comes up is broken into sections. Under the section titled, "Optional Information", the first subsection is "Custom User Title". This is where you change the text above your avatar. In the blank field, enter your new user title. Your current title is in bold just above this field.
4. at the bottom of the page, click on "Save Changes".
5. enjoy your new Custom User Title.
<hr height=1>
Make sense?

re the title:
When I first joined the forum, it was based on an invitation to join the President's Forum. Some one set my heading up as Club President. I never was club president, I was the Secretary. A friend of mine, who knew that I was secretary, recently congratulated me on my rise in office...so I figured it was time to change it.

How do avatars get added to the "Pre-defined Standard Avatars" list?
I just grabbed the logo from our website (http://bmwdfw.org/), scaled it down to 21% (to meet the 70x70 rule), saved it, and uploaded it as my own.
But I'm curious, as a very new member, how did the list get created?
Well that seemed like a good excuse for my first post.
Sincerely,

The picture looks fine...is has proper dimensions, 100x100. It appears to be a JPG. But the avatar isn't a link...it must be upload to your profile. You can link pictures in to a post (just as you did here), but avatars must be uploaded.
