I have an opportunity to buy a 1978 R100 /7 that is running. Good motor, tranny, frame, and tank. It runs, but needs:
Tires and the rear wheel needs Woody to straighten her out, but not so out of whack that it cannot be ridden.
Headlight assembly
and a speedo cable
Any help would be great. Thx

not over 3K, that would only be for a complete running, no work needed machine.
2k? if you can.
Once on the road ride the piss outta it, airheads like staying above 3k rpm's or 4k even more!

Welcome!
I got mine ('80 R100RT) for $2,900. It was in very good shape.
Expect to spend a good bit on pieces and parts to get it where you want it. If you have to pay to have the work done, it will cost more.
You may want to make a list of the everything you know needs to be done and get prices on the repairs and parts. Double that figure. The actual number will be higher in real life, but it will get you started on coming to a reasonable purchase price in your mind. If you don't have riding gear, work that into the equation.
The good news is, even though the cost of ownership may be higher than expected, it is more fun than you expected. :dance Now that gas is over $3 a gallon, you can even assemble statistics to make it seem downright responsible.

Thanks all for your input. I should be feeling pretty good at 4 - 500 bucks then. My wife is gonna kill me for bringing home another stray... Anyone interested in a 1968 Bultaco Matador serial number 8???? Thx

"feel good at $400- $500?" umm, no, that's not a "feel good". That's a solid deal, with plenty of cushion room for unexpected issues. I'd be jumping all over that sucker. that means you should be able to get it roadworthy and quite clean and sharp cosmetically for a few thou. in fact- if you turn it down, i'd be interested in it.

Was the seller really really old?
Nope, Apparantely, taking off on a ride last fall loaded down two up for a weekend trip the owner hit something in the road (common occurance here in the mountains) and popped the rear tire, but not going down. Wife was furious and still will not get back on a bike.
Anyway, the owner has another similar bike and has decided to prep it for riding and wants to get rid of this one. It has a slight bend in the rear wheel, but it holds a bead and air. Other than that she needs a headlight, battery, and a speedo cable already pilferred for his other bike. He is also taking the luggage racks, but oh well. I can weld something or buy on Fleabay. The owner just wanted to know that it was going to a good home. Which it is...dammit! Anybody got parts????? Thx

McClure? One of my all-time CO faves (especially if you can include the reservoir to the south of it), but that shot of mine was sure not McClure. Mine was taken coming over the top of the Glen Haven Rd approaching Estes park, looking east back towards GH. Or did you try to ost a shot of McClure, and get an abort?

Wow, the first pic really looks like the top of Mclure. Paonia resevoir is great. I ran sport bikes through there for 12 years having a lot of fun. It figures that the first ticket I ever got at Paonia Resevoir was on my slow GS. Nice 'S' by the way. That is a sharp looking bike.

1st shot was 2006 (red valve cover bolt heads) at top of the Glen Haven Rd (aka Devil's Gulch) approaching RMNP/Estes Park.
2nd shot was this fall (blue bolt heads).

Cool. That R100 will look really nice when it's just cleaned and shined a bit.
That's a recalled front wheel on it. Looks better on the single-disk bikes than the replacement, though.

I thought it was recalled, but did not know how to tell. I read something about that last summer, but cannot find the info. So I can contact a dealer and get a replacement wheel? Can anyone give me more info on this? I have to send the rear to Woody's for straightening, but if I dont need to for the front that would be great. Thanks

Once you see those wheels compared, it's easy to tell. I can see from your photos that this is a recall wheel that has not been replaced (as mine has).

Are you going to have it replaced? If so how will you go about this? Also, how do you get to the air filter on this bike? Thx By the way "Congrats on your new bike" pics?
bikerfish1100

Also, how do you get to the air filter on this bike?
Air filter is under air intake box. air intake box is the 2 piece assembly that choke lever is mounted to on left side. it sits atop the trans, and looks like its the back of the engine.
loosen clamps on both ends of air intake tubes. undo loooong bolt on left side of airbox (just above black air intake tube connecting airbox to carb). wiggle left half of intake box off. you can now remove filter. if you need to remove battery, or do other work in that area, you could remove right side of airbox too- procedure will be obvious once you're in that far.
during refitting, keep air tubes off until after bolt has been started into threads on right side of intake box- you might want/need to get your fingers up in thru the right side intake port to guide the bolt to the correct spot.
get a Clymer or Haynes manual. these bikes are the epitome of the DIY machine (for most everything except internal transmission repairs).

Are you going to have it replaced? If so how will you go about this?
Getting the wheel replaced by BMW will depend somewhat on the dealer. You'll need to call a dealer and ask what they want you to do. From what I understand, you will definintely need the VIN. That will make or break your recall request. If the VIN bike never had snowflake wheels, most likely your chances at getting the wheel replaced are nil. After that, you might have to bring the bike with wheels to the dealer.
Do a search on snowflake and/or recall on this forum for previous discussions.

Yeah, why not. It's free.

OK, so I got into the fuel cap...FINALLY! Luckily, someone had the foresight to line the inside of the tank...YES! Anyway, I am throwing around some directions to head in with this bike. One of them is cafe style. Does anyone have any expertise is putting on a Ducati half fairing like here on bike #36 and #92? I am wondering how you might have mounted it and if you retain the headlight how do you get clip-ons to mount? Thanks
