Hi:
I'm going to buy a '99 R1100RT it has bar backs. How complicated is it to remove them and return the bars to stock configuration? Is there a wiring redo to consider? Is it simply a matter of removing the spacers and resetting the bars? I don't know the manufacturer, I don't have the bike with me.

Any info will be appreciated.

It should be as simple as removing the spacers and resetting the bars. BUT, you will need the original sized bolt.s The ones though the spacers will be too long to tighten down.

I have the same issue with a new to me 2004 R1150RS, I have an 18,000 mile service scheduled for the 25th, but I'd lik to take these bar backs off now. I'm 6' and have long arms.. I think they've got me too upright.

Easy DIY job. ACE hardware is an excellent source for metric fasteners!

Yes! But!

The fit and finish, especially the plating, isn't as good as OEM on most of these fasteners. I've had a few corrosion issues.

I would just get the BMW bolts in the stock length. A few bucks and no corrosion.

My bar backs use the original fasteners as well as new fasteners. The original bolts hold the handlebars to the bar back spacers while the new bolts hold the spacers to the steering head.
