My Mother and a close friend have both had knee replacements.
My mother was overweight and a beautician so her knees just gave out. She had them both replaced and for the last 15 years have had no issues.
My friend is slender and in good health, but could barely walk. He had them both replaced. His therapy period was cut short because he recoverd so quick. He says he can do everything except jog and jump off things. He is ready to golf this summer and extremely happy.

I am scheduled for my right knee in late July.
Don "Kilty" Faichney, Ontario, immediate past BMW MOA ambassador coordinator, had his replaced a year ago.
Please report on how long it actually takes post surgery to get back on your motorcycle! Others want to know!
Eight to 12 weeks seems longer than I would have assumed.

Well I just had my left knee done on December 10th and so far it has done extremely well!
I was in the hospital 6 days, on cructches for a week and then on to my cane.
I only used the cane for a week and then I was ok to walk.
I am seeing a physiotherapist and so far I am exceeding his expectations!
The biggest thing was walking without limping! I have limped for so long that it has become second nature and I really have to consentrate not to limp!
I think that if the weather was good that I could ride after 8 weeks with no problem!
I through a leg over the R100RS yesterday and I am able to sit normally with both feet comforably on the pegs.
I am sure by April 1st I will be on the road riding again!
Spent 4 hours today tearing the bike apart for new seals & gasgets, clutch refaced, and redo my rear drive.
Looking forward to spring!

Darryl, glad yours went well, my Dad will be happy to hear that, as he is scheduled for the 17th of this month. My Mom and Father-in-law have had hip replacements, but we don't know anyone who has had a knee done (yet)

It's a month now after your surgery. Do you think you could ride now if the weather was good enough?

A friend had his one knee replaced in early November and was walking very well a few days later. On New Year's day, he and his wife went for a group ride, riding either his GW1800 or his wife's slightly smaller Honda. For him the surgery provided him with instant relief. He will be getting the other knee replaced in next month.:dance

I am an RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) and assist two Orthopedic Surgeons with this procedure. I just had my Left Knee Replaced on 14 Dec. Knowing that everyone is different and will recover at there own pace I can tell you that at almost four weeks that I am recovering just fine. I attend PT three times a week and I have made very good gains with my flextion and extention of my leg. I am confident that I will be riding my R 1200 GS this spring. Too much snow here now to take it for a ride.
Work hard in PT.
To take care of the cabin fever I have been reading every motorcycle mag that I can get my hands on. MOA, Bike, Two

I told the surgeon yesterday that I am walking into the hospital and I will walk out.
I will be 3 to 4 days in hospital and then go to rehab for about a week. Will not be alowed to drive for 3 weeks. I will have to go to outpatient rehab 2 or3 time a week, until the PT and the surgeon feel I am stable enough to not Helpers(cane or walker)
Since it will be on the cold and damp side until April, I am hoping to be read to ride. I would like to have 6 to 8mweek on the bike before july so i can ride to Gillette.
Thanks for the input. :bolt

Hi Jeff;
Sorry I was told of your question about my knee replacement by my wife Terry yesterday.
If the weather was favorable, I would be comfortable enough to ride in a few weeks. I have my total knee replacemant done 5 weeks ago and I am getting around very well! I should think if you keep up the physiotherapy and do all the excercises that you should be in good shape for the riding season! Time wise I think 8 weeks at the minimum and 12 max!
Good luck with your surgery!

I had the left knee replaced in 1996, the right in 1998, and thye left hip replaced in 2002. I ride a 1200 gs and the knees are not a problem except they don't like cold weather or changing barometric pressures. the hip is uncomfortable when sitting for periods of time. I went to an aftermarket seat and a airhawk pad for rides over 300 mil;es. On the knees, I didn't ride for 10 weeks on the doctors advice. It' best to follow all rehab suggestions. Good luck

This is an amazing forum. Everytime time I am thinking something or have a question someone else is too. Mthelmet, I had my left knee replaced February 8th, the same day as you. I'm doing pretty well. Propping the knee up and alot of icing it down, to control the swelling. Range of motion is coming back nicely. I am 58 and have also had 2 hips replaced over the last 4 years. I think I waited about 3 months after each surgery to start riding. The only problem I have ever had was a little residual soreness or tightness. Although I was some overly cautious as I began again each time, but that shortly was replaced with normal responsible riding and fun. This time around I was wondering if there were any special challenges for the knee, and how many joints can be replaced before its too many to ride motorcycles? My answer to that was to assume that the knee would be stronger then the old bumb knee that I replaced, so riding would be better, and that I am having these replacements to do what I want without physical restriction (reasonably), so 3 is no problem. Thanks for bringing this up and to all for sharing your stories. I'll probably start riding again around the first of April. Hope to see you all this summer.

I had a full knee replacement 2 years ago. Went into the hospital Thurday afternoon and was dicharged at noon Sunday. They started PT on Friday morning. I used crutches for three days and a cane for one. The most imortant thing is to make sure you work hard on the rehab. I did rehab three days a week for three weeks and continued to work with a trainer. Extension and flexion become very hard work at first but the sweat will pay off in the long run. The replacement knee is now my good one. I play golf, ski, and can ride all day without any pain.
Good luck! I am sure you will like the result.

I don't recall who it was on here, but they said the had surgery (I think it also was for the knee) and their computer was upstaird. They couldn't get on the forum for a month so make sure you have everything you need before your surgery. :thumb

I had my right knee replaced on Jun 11th, and my left knee replaced on Dec 17th. The right knee has almost all the old motion back, and is entirely pain free. The left is still being rehabbed (is that a word?), but is improving daily. I found that it takes about 6 weeks to get back to semi-normal, and about that much time to be able to ride again. I took a full month off from work each time, am back to work 1/2 days this week, and full time next week. Expect the knee to stay warm and swollen for several months. At about the three month point, I knew I had definitely done the right thing with the right knee......can't wait for that feeling in the left. My plan it to be able to walk 18 holes by March. I have tickets to the final two rounds of The Masters in April....can't wait to walk Augusta National again. Walking without pain.......what a concept!!:thumb

Again thanks for the support. My goal is to be able to ride pain free.
Have the plans for going to Gillette in July.
I will keep you informed on my progress. The good thing,I'm told that we live on one floor. I only have stairs when I must go to the second floor of the garage.

OK, here is my proposal:
All of us former cripples will meet in the Beer tent in Gillette and compare scars!
I just came from seeing my surgeon and he said I was doing extremely well and that's only 5 weeks post-op!

I haven't had a knee replacement, but the last ortho that I saw said that I will need them someday. I'm too young to get them now. (Combine bad genetics and ski racing). I HAVE had a surgery on my left knee- they took my patella off, cleaned, reshaped, and when they put it back on they cut along one side of the tendon to pull it back into place and prevent it from dislocating like it had been doing.
My best advice would be to follow the dr's orders to the T. drink plenty of fluids. Don't drink while on pain killers and fall down a flight of stairs two days after your surgery. turns a 2 month recovery into a 6 month recovery. don't ask how I know.

I'll need at least the right knee done sometime in the future, but I can still ride the GS all day without knee pain.
HOWEVER, .......my orthopedic doc says that the right hip needs to be done soonest. Anyone out there had to go that route, yet?:dunno

Most of the patients I am familiar with who have had hips done have recovered a little faster than knee patients. However, there are special precautions initially during rehab. Bending at the waist, or crossing the ankles allows the prosthetic hip to dislocate, and are initially prohibited. Other than that, there is a high success rate (just like knees) for a return to normal life. It all depends on the type of prosthetic device and procedure used, your pain tolerance, and your desire to rehab. Good luck.

I used to sell a nuclear device that could detect different metallurgical alloys in a matter of seconds. My favorite sales call was to a scrap yard. He bought replacement knees and hips from crematoriums and needed to be able to distinguish between the differnt alloys in a hurry. He opened a case he had just received and I demoed the gear by analyzing the various knees and hips.

A friend of mine and fellow rider coach had gotten so bad last year he had to have his knee replaced. He is in his 60's and was back and riding (okay'd by his doctor) in 5 weeks. I am in for consultation for my left knee for replacement 1st week of Feb and hoping for the same.

That is great to know. I have two weeks from friday,1/25/08, for the big repair. At that rate I should be ready when the all the slush goes away.
Plan calls for riding to Gillette in July.
