So at the End of November I replaced the transmission in my 1990 K75 C. Everything went well and the test ride (30 Miles) showed no signs of leaks or Vibrations. Then winter hit the next day and it sat in a climate controlled garage (temp 75'F). It sat for about 4 weeks without being driven and the weather here in Illinios yesterday was a perfect 60 degrees. I put about 75 miles on it yesterday and noticed a Radiator hose leak to my reservour. I picked up some radiator tubing and headed home.
At home after letting the bike cool down I replaced the hose. When I started the bike up to circulate the fluid to get out all the air bubbles I noticed a stream of transmission oil coming off the clutch. Not much came out only about 100mL but I couldn't tell were it was coming from. It stopped running out when I shut of the bike and didn't run out again after I restarted the bike. I bought the transmission used with only 6000 miles on it and all the sealed areas look good. Any suggestions on were to start?

Where exactly did the oil come out from - the drain hole in the botom of the clutch housing? That could be transmission oil (front seal) or engine oil (crankshaft seal).

It was definitely the Transmision fluid. IIt was dripping off the rubber boot that the clutch bolt pushes into. By the time I got down and looked to see were it was really coming from it had stopped the main stream and was dripping off the rubber boot.

Replace the boot.(easy and cheap).

Make sure tranny is not overfilled. (use the line on the shock preload wrench with bike on centerstand).

That should fix it.

I would replace the boot - but there probably is nothing at all wrong.

When the cable is disconnected and the adjuster bolt pulls out of the boot there is not much to keep fluid in the transmission. The boot is supposed to be a tight fit around the bolt, and tightly clamped to the mounting boss on the transmission.

Tilt the transmission back a bit putting it in and oil leaks out. If it isn't hooked up and arranged just right when the box is filled, it pukes oil.

Thanks I will check that tonight. I was just glad it didn't puke out the oil when I was out riding, that would have been a slick situation an damaging to the bike. Even though, as usual, I have to replace my right side turn signal from my bike wanting to take a nap in a parking lot. Is there any cure for a Bike that is Narcoleptic?

Paul is exactly right with regards to the boot filling up when you tilt the transmission back to remove and or install when the transmission has fluid in it.:bow

I just did a major service and left the fluid in when removing the trans for a spline lube, the trans fluid fills the boot , and when you're cleaning the input splines it runs out if you tip it up too high...:doh

I would clean up the boot on the outside, make sure it is fitting the center bolt correctly and recheck the fluid level with the shock spanner and you should be good to go.:thumb
