I spent 4 years in the US Navy from the very beginning of 1968 to the very end of 1971. One year was spent on the USS America (CVA 66) and one year was spent on the USS San Marcos (LSD25). The rest was spent on shore duty, schooling and boot camp.

I hated you guys. No offense. 2 rotations at NTC. My first rotation I spent as much time with the Engineers setting up mine fields and running concertina wire as I did on my tank. SUCKED. That was a dirty job.

I served for 24 total in the Reserves. Started out as MP at first which lasted less than a year then went Armor. Was a Plt Ldr, Company XO, Commo Plt. Ldr, Bn S-2 and Company Cmdr.

Then I went to a School unit and taught for several years, MOS Enlisted non specific, Armor ops (Ft. Knox), Officers Advance course (non branch specific as well as Armor) and Command and General Staff College. In the middle of that I also had a nice trip to Panama for Operation Just Cause.

I finished up in several staff puke jobs in various locations. My last was Reserve Mobilization liaison at Ft. Jackson. I stacked arms to take care of my wife after her cancer surgery.

You may have been my "guardian angel" back when I was sailing to many of those stateside areas.

The one time fatigue/bad judgement caused me to wind up on the beach on Santa Rosa Island, FL, it was the CG that came and pulled me off. There is always a beer or a meal for any Coastie at my place.

Started out life as a Marine in the Signals Intelligence community. After my first school in Pensacola, FL I was stationed at Misawa Airbase Japan. Left there for Monterey, CA and language shcool. Spent 47 weeks learning Tagalog (Phillipino). Joined a Radio Recon unit out of Hawaii and spent some time in the Phillipines and the Persian Gulf during 90-91.

I saw a different opportunity in the Army to fly helicopters and was selected for the Warrant Officer Flight Training Program. I did flight training at Ft. Rucker, AL and then headed to Ft. Campbell, KY for my first assignment. Went to Bosnia in 97-98 and then headed back to Rucker to teach.

I retired in 2004 and have been teaching as an Army Civillian Instructor Pilot ever since.

Life is good.

Where served? Lots of places, it's a mobile force, eh?
4 years active duty early 70s.
16 years USMCR
(Also spent my first 16 years of life as a USAF service brat. (Highlight... 2 yrs in Istanbul in the mid 60s with adventurous parents)
Worste duty, Helicopter door gunner HMM-165 / HMH-462.
Farorite food, Fire roasted Habu and fresh Bok choy is better than most c-rats!
Best duty...Night crew NCOIC El Toro, lots of days spent on Laguna Beach or Newport Beach surfing or prefecting mid weight frisbee and swiming skills. (unwitting training for 2 later decades of triathlons and marathons)
Or possibly NATO Ops Bodo Norway.

As luck would have it I have most crucial body parts intact.
And, so far the body has survived other complimentary service related afflictions.
And... I am happy to be riding the BMW brand , regardless of what the Germans think about the USA market.

Thought for the day; War is typically about personal power, rarely about personel empowerment. Win or lose the general population on both sides suffers!

Then on to Ft. Benning, GA

Met life long friends while at Ft. Benning. Wouldn't have missed it for the world, wouldn't do it over again.

My office at Benning was next to the jump towers, our entertainment was watching the wind shift. Lots of guys blown into the tower.

Big hill at Benning where the guys in jump school ran up in the middle of summer singing "I wanna be an Airborne Ranger, I wanna go to Viet Nam." Some did.

Hey,I couldn't help if they kept closing down all the sites-or giving them to Japan!
Funny story about Okinawa & Japan-when we handed over our site to the JASDF, we staged a fake convoy to show/appease the locals that we were removing the nuclear warheads, when in fact, everything was intact when we left that day.
They were still touchy 27 years after Hiroshima/Nagasaki.Imagine that.

Went thru ROTC at Indiana University 66-70. Got spit on a few times. Scabbard and Blade Military Honorary and an ROTC schloraship. Active duty at Aberdeen Proving Ground for Officers Basic MOS 4815 Mechanical Maintenance Officer. Then off to lovely Ft. Hood with the 1 Cav, 27 Maintanance Btn. Shop Officer with 300 man and a fix anything shop. ETS 6 Jun 70. Then Commander of a Postal Detachment in Rushville, Ind. Me and 23 enlisted men and a bunch of Rough Terrain Forklifts. My parents and brothers all served. I think I was conceived on a beach during WW2 in the Phillipines when me Dad was a surgeon with a MASH unit and mom was an officer nurse.
I have 3 brothers. At one time in 1970, we were all serving, brother Pat at the Coast Guard Academy, Mike as a medic in Viet Nam, Robert was an OR Tech at Ft. Sam. My brother Pat retired after 20 in the USCG after commanding the Daultlass, the number one dope boat.
Once destroyed a $30,000 tank engine by ordering an E6 to pick it up with an RT fork lift. He lifted it up off the truck, but it flipped off. The CG mark was a marked wrong on the container... Opps.
