My buddy's looking at a '79 RT. From the pix I've seen, it appears to have the original cast wheels w/o the extra flange or "rib." Does BMW still replace them? If not, would you spring the $400+ for a new front or wait and see if cracks appear?
I expect they're available used for something less than $400, though.

BMW still honors the recall...at least they should. Snowbum has a link on his site to the federal recall website and with the right code, the recall notice can be seen. Some dealers might push back some, though. Each dealer seems to handle these a little different...some will just take the wheel with your VIN; some want you to ride the bike in. Some will need to verify that the bike (VIN) actually had snowflakes installed.

You should be sure that the bearings get serviced (grease and preload) as they tend to come with only light assembly oil. Again, some dealers are reluctant to do that...or maybe they don't even know how! You should be sure the bearings are properly setup either way...

I thought this question had been asked before. Did a search using the search option on the tool bar above “Search” and came up with this thread. It may give you the answer or at least some specific members to PM with follow up questions

The recall is still valid in Canada. I had one replaced last spring and a friend had one done last October. Now we both wish that there was a recall on the rear wheel so that the back looked as good as the front does.

Gives us yet another reason to pull the rear wheels and paint them to match that brand new front one.

The recall includs the wheel, new bearings and inner tube, as well as all labour to remove and install and high speed balancing the new wheel and tire.

Thanks for the topic. I have got an 83 R100RT I got to look at now. I never knew about the recall. I hope the prior owner took care of the problem.:whistle

Checked the wheel and it is the 8 spoke wheel. Guess that makes me ok.

hey, moondog, just to be sure, It's the ribs or webbing reiforcements on the inner part of the "spokes" that are what you're looking for.

Any BMW can tell you if your bike was fixed via the VIN. Either that or if it wasn't part of the original recall.
