Lake Luzerne is 20 miles north of Ballston Spa by road. But Lake Luzerne in the Adirondacks. This piece is from this Morning's Post Star which is published in Glens Falls, NY
The arctic air that soared from Canada on Thursday did more than make morning travel unpleasant.
At the Hadley-Luzerne Central School District, most of the school buses were unable to operate, as temperatures dropped to nearly minus 20.
Buses are usually on the road by 6 a.m., but on Thursday, only six buses ran without trouble. Five others made it onto the road before later freezing up, and another 15 could not be started at all. ... The bus trouble began when temperatures turned the diesel fuel into a gel, said Sunny Green, the district's director of transportation.

I went to St. Lawrence University, which is north of there- pretty close to the St. Lawrence River. There were days when my thermometer outside my window would peg at -40. Walking to class was awful, but it was quite entertaining to see everybody dressed up for it- you'd get to recognize people by their eyes because it was the only thing showing.
Reminds me of the scene from Christmas Vacation when Audrey's eyes freeze. "She'll have to see it later Clark, her eyes are frozen."

Someplace near St. Lawrence is a college that puts up rope ways along the walks. In way of a whiteout students can find their way to one building or another.
You knew it was a real cold day when the down feathers started floating around the classroom.
My battery tenders must be on overtime.

It's been in the single digits here for the highs with near record amounts of snowfall last month - not counting freezing rain and sleet.
That made the traditional New Year's Day 10 mile run we do a little chilly. Actually, it's the worst I recall.
Thankfully, global warming is kicking in. The next seven days and some of the nights will be above freezing. Temps this weekend will be near fifty. With any kind of luck, by Monday or Tuesday, the warmer temps and expected rains will wash away all salt and I'll be riding!

Oh, to be near Chinook winds. Mind you, I wouldn't want to be down around Calgary when the winds are cold and putting that nice, icy glaze on the highways.
Roads up here in Edmonton aren't bad but you cannot get out of the residential areas because residential streets don't get plowed. So, Chinook winds would be welcome up here.

Robert:
I spent three winters in Edmonton when I attended U of A, and my car at the time was an MG Midget, which had about an inch of ground clearance.
Every spring, after exams, my first task would be to replace the exhaust header, which would crackfrom high centering on the Edmonton side roads all winter. It was a b***h of a job to do, too.
I was almost killed in that car when I did a triple barrel roll in it at Juniper Lodge, just north of Red Deer, in blowing snow, but my buddy (famed Edmonton BMW owner, Daryl Thompson) and I walked away from the accident, as we were both wearing shoulder harnesses, and the windshield frame held. After I graduated, my first purchase was a car with a steel roof: a two litre Ford Capri.

Paul, Calgary has a unique climatological situation, being high and dry at 3,500' ASL, about 350 nautical miles direct from the Pacific. Every winter it gets an average of 52 "Chinook" (from the Salishan word "Tsinook" which means "snow eater") winds, and which can raise temperatures by 45 (F) degrees in a few hours.
Yesterday, when I went to the annual bike show, the crotch rockets were out again in full force (I don't think we have any local Rounders, and I'm sure not one of them).:laugh

When I finished college in '95 I moved to Fargo for a job. During the following winter there was a day when I went to my 12-hour shift on Saturday in shorts/t-shirt and it was 76F at 9am. By the time I left that night there were 8-10' drifts and driving wind and a windchill of -80 to -100. Needless to say, my roommate and I got her Ford Tempo stuck in a drift and I had to walk from the car to a phone in my summer outfit and back to the car to wait for the tow. I moved in June.

I'm not a fan of the 5 month winter, but I enjoy the diversity in ethnicity a great deal. I have learned 'MN nice' is a joke--it's more that people would rather talk about you after you've left the room.
The St Croix River Valley makes for some nice riding.

Minus 30 C here this morning, and it's going to be with us for a few days. But we knew it was coming, and on Saturday it was sunny and 32 F, so I cut our (house) cats loose in the back yard for a few hours.
Today they're huddled over the registers or curled up in their beds trying to keep warm.:laugh

Last week, we had actual temperatures overnight of -10F. Some parts of Iowa was -23F actual. Don't ask about the windchill.
Then, global warming arrived on Sunday and Monday. Upper 40's on Sunday and 54 on Monday. Rode around and got dirty. :bliss
Oddly, the only other bike I saw those two days was the assembled in America brand.
Washed my baby up last afternoon, dried her off, cleaned and lubed the chain, and put her to sleep. Al Gore stayed home for a few days, apparently, so global warming went away. Winter storm advisory for today and tomorrow night, temps back in the -10F area. I'd guess, though, we're 30 to 60 days max before we have consistent riding weather again. Sleep well, my beauties for you're going to get some use this year.

Rich:
I just did a conversion and that's about what it is here. We'll be coming out of it tomorrow morning and hopefully your state will follow.
There's been quite a few rural school closures here; CP Rail have reduced their daily train runs because rolling stock wheels and track are becoming quite brittle, and in Calgary there are stalled vehicles and ones with flat tires all over the place.
The forest people are pretty happy though. They figure that the cold snap will kill off a significant number of mountain pine beetles, which have been infesting Alberta and BC's evergreen forests. There are thousands of acres of infested trees.

While it was in the upper 40's yesterday, we have high winds (50mph gusts this morning) and a balmy 8 degrees. It was 12F when I left for lunch. At least it's supposed to get back around the freezing mark, tomorrow. That will feel like a heat wave...
