Thanks , Mike

The biggest difference would be the dual spark system on the '04, which gives a variable spark timing to the secondary plug.

I have experience with '02 and '04 GS's. 02s have ABS brakes 04s have ABS and servo assisted brakes which act like power brakes. . .but not linked so front and rear work separately. My friend with the 04 really doesn't like them probably overkill since my brake pressure is very easy anyway.

The '04 RT has linked ABS servo assist brakes. Pressure on either the front or rear brake applies both brakes as needed. This feature cannot be disabled on the RT.

I looked at both models when buying a used RT in 2005 and opted for the '04 due to the dual spark and the fact that '04 was the last model year for that classic RT body style. Additionally, the original owner had put Cee Bailey seats and oversize windscreen on it along with Throttlemeister and a tour pack.

I do not think the '02 would be a wrong way to go but weigh the costs and features with your personal preference.

Mike:

I had an '02 RS with a surging problem that was really difficult to tune out, in part perhaps because of the very high altitude of my home city (3,500 ' ASL). If I was getting another oiler, and an '04 was available, I would definitely pick that year, if the price was right, just for the twin spark feature.

Here's a good source for some RT info.

Sorry to whip a lame horse, but if you're considering buying one over the other you may want to take into consideration the spline failure thing. It seems that 02 RTs had their share of this type of issue. Kind of an anecdotal observation, I know, but worth considering. I think I'd go for the 04.

My '02 RT-P has linked servo assisted ABS brakes, so that wouldn't appear to be a difference between '02 RTs and '04 RTs.
