I just bought my 05 1200GS about 3 months ago, (fall of 07). It had 40,000 mi on it at the time. It had the final drive bearings upgraded in July of 07. My question is how much driveline lash or play should it have? It seems to have an excessive amount. If I put it up on the center stand in 1st gear with the engine off and then work the tire back and forth and measure the movement at about the middle of the sidewall ,it's about 1 3/4 to 2". That may not sound like a lot but it sure takes some getting used to and it FEELS like 5". Is there a spec for this? Has anybody else ever measured the slop in their driveline? I didn't get an owners manual with the bike so forgive me if it's in there. Can anything be done to take some of this out? Thanks

That sounds normal. Virtually none of that is adjustable. You are taking up all of the several gaps - final drive, transmission (four or five different places) and clutch hub. What you feel is all of the cumulative slack in all of those places.

Thanks Paul.
I guess I'll just have to get used to it. I had to adjust my shifting a habits a little to stay smooth. I think part of that is just getting used to the boxer motor too. This is the first one I've owned and I love the pulsebeat and sound of the big twin! The K75 and K1100 I owned previous to this were so much fun I was a little afraid of trading , but all for naught. Same fun, just different character!

Hello,

I just went out and measured mine ('07 'GS 4K miles 1st gear) and have just a hair less than 1 3/4 inches of travel from the bottom of the tire, center of sidewall. Guess this is normal......

I am not aware of any bearing upgrade for the R1200 series bikes, I know there was one for the 1150 final drives with a different number of bearings. Do you know more about the upgrade that was done on your bike? Could it have been just a seal replacement?
