Okay my son wants to install communications device that will alow him to 1. listen to his ipod or sirius radio WITHOUT unpluging and pluging in. 2. Alow his radar detector to still warn him. 3. His gps to still interupt the music to tell him directions
4. This is not a selling point because he doubts he is going to use it but be able to communicate with me. 5. CHEAP this will be his first one so it does not have to be 600 bucks. Also if someone could recomend a set of headphones that will work well in his helmet. Thank You

I don't know the best choice for your technical issues. The combination of youth, speed(radar dectector), music, and interactive GPS while riding seems like it could produce a bad result. I don't mean to overstep. Obviously, you guys have to make the choices. I'll go back to minding my own business now.

What you have described is the Mix-It II. http://www.mixitproducts.com/

It has the advantage of being made and sold by a BMWMOA member and all around good guy. I've had one for two years and it is great.

For headphones, I use molded earplugs from http://www.earplugco.com/
Another member owned business.

What John said. The Mix-It is a fine piece of equipment, can operate on a 9-volt battery or be supplied by the bike's 12-volt system, has 2 stereo and 2 mono inputs and works great.

For sound, you might think about a pair of custom molded earphones. I bought mine at a local hearing aid store. The can also be purchased at some rallies. They help block wind noise and provide fairly good sound for my ipod.

Amplirider has remote mounted volume control, three stereo inputs, runs off bike 12V and costs $65................Can't be beat for the $$

I've installed over a dozen of them with zero issues......

The only one I've used is the MixIt2 and I've been extremely happy with it. It runs off the bike or a 9V battery. It has a prioirty input that mutes the other sources when it receives a signal - handy for a radar detector so you don't miss the warning because of your tunes. You would still need to figure out something for b2b communication, because this will only handle the audio side of the equation.

I bought a used shoei helmit with J&M headphones/mike installed and later picked up the integratr. If all I wanted was to communicate and listen to gps or radar the headphones work fine, and would probably work fine with ear plugs to block out wind noise. but I can't wear foam, ridged, etc. earplugs comfortably and the music, which is all I want, is schrill and tiring through the headphones. My solution was to give the headphones/mike to a riding buddy who helps me on my bike, get custom earplugs from now hear this, buy adapter cable(from now hear this) to plug headphones into the integrator(which also accepts a microphone if needed), buy a used ipod. All this takes a year....then i get gps for christmas. it all works great, the units all easily go to the other motorcycle or truck. I like the earplugs, a lot, wear them working with power tools, with the ipod or small sony radio. if you don't need to communicate on the bike there are other, cheaper amp options, or buy a splitter cable, earplugs are efficient and loudLOUD, don't take much to drive them and really block out wind noise. I'm going to sell the integratr cause my girlfriend would rather punch me in the side and point at the turn I missed. email me @ backtalk8124@sbcglobal.net if you want further gusto on this stuff..

there's a cool headphone thread over on advrider.com started by Tyll (of headroom.com fame).
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=289280

worth the time to read if you're into music and biking. he carries some very small insert buds that people seem to like called Q-jays (they are the tiny black ones in the middle of this pic (borrowed from Tyll's post #40):

The only thing special about them is their size. Many insert buds protrude and interfere with helmet. These look like they'd be perfect.

I have small ear canals and have been using the ER6i's with the special-order small foam tips. A new pair of ER6i's I just bought come with the blue christmas tree tips like the ones shown on the ER4P phones. They work for me, unlike the white tree-style tips.

I'd try the Q-tips, but I think the seal tip would be too big.

Your mileage may vary. Sometimes I wish I could fit a fist inside my ear like some people I know.

I use the Autocom System. I have it all wired into my tank bag so it can be switched from bike to bike. I can listen to Ipod, have bike to bike radio, hear the radar detector, GPS or even make a Bluetooth Phone call. All while riding down the freeway, voice activated!

Unfortunately, I don't use any of it but the Ipod but I could if I wanted to. Its nice not to have to take off your helmet to stop and make a phone call. Anyway, the sound quality is very nice; the helmet speakers provide a very pleasant listening environment and the VOX mic is the best I've seen.

It isn't $600 but mine was $450 and I did all the install/wiring myself.
