I just took off my left rear wheel bearing cover and discovered that my left bearing race was loose in the hub as I pulled everything out but my right bearings by hand. I then heated the hub and knocked out my right bearing and race. The bearings are Timkins but made in France. Any Ideas? Can I knurl the left ID or maybe apply some Loctite? I guess I probably need to get new bearings and set the preload before? Any Ideas? Thanks

If the hub is not more than .002" bigger than the bearing, you can probably loctite it. Its a little tricky, as the bearing ass'y has to be greased before installation. You can also wrap the outer race with a feeler guage, loctiting the whole mess together.
A better choice would be a new or new-to-you hub or wheel.
This problem seems common in /5s-is that what you have?

No, I have a 77 R100S. Just checking with a set of dial calipers, it's about 2/10's mm bigger. Just enough to spin and pull out by hand.

Years and years, without any hassle. GREEN Locktite is the right stuff for this and let it sit overnight to harden, once bearings are in place:). My R100/7 did this same thing about 20 years ago and I still ride it with more miles than most here ride at 300K+ now. I take my bearings out every time a new tire goes on and redo the locktite/grease and with 300000 miles, I would say it works:). I am the only owner of this bike, since new in '78. YES, original bearings too! Randy12333:usa. PS; You have money to burn? Get a new hub:) My money comes hard and I make things work and I live well:) Happy Trails

Does this mean the lolctite works loose and you have to redo it each time, or is it more preventative or ?????
just curious

to knurl the hub as I've built a I.D. knurling tool. If that doesn't work, I will see if I can get a bearing with 1mm larger on the race O.D.and bore the hub to fit. A new or used hub goes into alot of expense with respoking and such. Will let you know how it comes out.:scratch

I used to take a pin punch and (knurl) the inside surface in a fashion. Allowed you to drive the race in and not rely on a chemical bond.

My I.D. knurling tool worked like a charm. Checked preload, installed new bearings and everything looks good. :dance
