I would appreciate any suggestions on the purchase of an intercom system. I don't think I need to talk on a cell phone while cruising on my R1200 GSA, but would like input from all of you more experienced riders. That includes most everyone!
Merry Christmas,

I use an Autocom. I don't connect my cell phone, but I like it because of the voice clarity and its ability to accept GPS, stereo and whatever. :blah

Autocom offers three models to choose from depending on how many attachments you want or weather you want bike to bike. Good instruction and support help for installation. StarCom with digetal might be worthwhile but not much feedback. I have mine hooked through the AMFM &CD on my '06 RT so that part works great, also I plug in an MP3 player and still have a couple of plug in left on my Plus System. We use flip up helmets and with the helmets down it is a good as you can expect. Around town or slower speeds when I flip up the helmet I get a little wind noise through the mic.

take a look at Blue Ant Interphone - no wires and works great!

+1 Used em most of last season and they work great. You just have to be a little careful plugging the microphone in. The pins can get bent over easy.

If all you want is intercom, Autocom currently has a sale on their Easi-7 system - $99. Can't beat that price.

I have the BlueAnt units too. Mostly good, but I'll add a few of items to the gripe-list:

1) The clamp-mounts break after about 2 months (both of mine did).
2) Battery life is only about five hours. Not a problem for most folks, but could be an annoyance if you're into hardcore touring.
3) Gooseneck for mic is a bit bulky to run behind pads in helmet.
4) Multi-function control button is not intuitive to use (carry the manual in your tankbag!).

Got an Autocom last summer, and it works like a charm. I use it for rider/passenger intercom, GPS voice prompts, and music from my iPod. You can also hook a phone to it, as well as use it for bike-to-bike.

Has anyone tried the German digital Beahr units, which I believe are imported by National Cycle? I'm curious to know how they stack up against the ones from Autocom...

Thanks to all of you fellow members who answered my query as to what intercom systems I should consider.

I have been happy with a Starcom unit. http://www.starcom1.com/
I got mine from: http://www.casporttouring.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=STAR1

There are two generations beyond the one I have that appear to be even better. The Baehr units have a reputation of being good but very expensive.

There is an amazing product in the UK called backchat. My wife and I used one for years.

It uses no batteries, in fact no pwer at all, is waterproof, has no boxes that you need to mount, has no wires to break...........and best of all has amazing performance. Regardless of speed it is as though your passanger is in your ears. There is no interference, no volume controls to adjust. You simply talk as normal.

Backchat uses "bridge to engine room technology".........TUBES! So, so simple I am amazed tha noone else has done it. When I first heard about the system I thought that it wouldn't work very well - but we were amazed!

What's more it's cheap. It has won many awards in the UK motorcycle press, just suprised that it has not made it across the pond.

Have a look at www.backchat-vixen.com

I have a blueant for my helmet that's on the way. It's supposed to work great both as an intercom and for cell phones. Will let you know when I test it out if it's any good or not.

Here's the web site:

Ive had good luck with the Starcom unit.
The Phone port works great for a GPS unit as it will mute the other sources when the GPS posp off.

I'm here late, but here is my $.02. I have a Baehr unit and it is fantastic, although pricey. My wife and I converse normally at highway speeds, the GPS talks to me in my helmet. I have the capability (although seldom used) of listening to MP3, which my wifes' or my voice preempts as necessary. Same with cell phone if I wish (I would NEVER wish that). It works in the rain, and has been very reliable. I recommend it if affordable.

Thanks, based on a lot of reading, I opted for the Baehr Verso XL
I had a Cardo Wireless Bluetooth on the Harley, and I do not think it is very good.
It went to eBay
