I got a 1983 R100RT that I laid down last summer:cry . The forward fairing got some damage but the worst damage is that it off center to the right. My beemer mechaneck said that the "h" frame that holds it on is probably bent. I have been looking at and the BMW manual doesn't give too much info on how to get the fairing off:scratch . Is there a logical order of removing the upper fairing? I already have the lowers off. It such a rats nest to get into the fairing with tools. Everything is in the way! Do I have to remove the tank?:scratch

remove the headlight glass and tunnel(screws hidden under each corner of headlight gasket/tunnel) 4 bolts hold fairing to front bracket, bolt in each pocket for crossbracket(you may have already removed those to get the lowers off. I would pull the tank.

tghsmith, man I am surprised it hasn't fallen on the ground yet. I think I have all but one bolt left and seems to be real tight still. Does the center fairing (the one around the headlight come off by itself or does that come off with the rest of the fairing? I have been trying to get that out but the screws are in a bugger of a place.

On another subject about Douglas Adams, I have had dreams about his theory of flight. I have never been able to distract myself long enough while awake but I fly like a bird in my dreams. weird, eh:wow

4 10 mm hold the fairing to the frame, the main three sections(center=L&R side) come off as one unit after the small lower center section is removed(the one with brake lines passing through)hopefully you have one master plug for the fairing electrics.

You'd better remove the tank or you'll scratch it.

Besides the four screws through the fairing bracket there are two more under the side pockets connected to the cross brace.

You're going to have to disconnect all the wiring to the gauges, turn signals, and ignition switch, too. I'd just remove the ign switch from the dashboard, leaving wiring connected, however.

Clearly you have to remove the back half of the fairing around the forks.

You're going to have to be careful with the brake lines, but you don't have to separate them. Push down out of the grommet.

This is not a one-person job.

Thanks for the insight. I'm thinking about a steering head bearing lube and will be using two people.
