I am purchasing an '06 R1200 GS Adventure. My previous rides were a Yamaha Venture and some dirt bikes. This bike has 5600 miles on the odometer. Any suggestions on service needed. Cautions on riding?

It'll soon be due for the 6,000 service. If you have a dealership do it make sure its stamped in the owner's manual. It helps if and when you sell the bike. For that matter, check the owner's manual and see if the prior owner had the 600 mile service done.
Otherwise, just ride it like ya' stole it!:D

These bikes last so long and so well, they do litteraly last forever. Keep track of everything: I use a Baroody's Bike Log and a 3 ringed notebook. After a few years you will appreciate the documentation like copies of accessories added, of course maintenance done, tires and oil changes etc. etc. Also, if you sell it, it shows the care you took of it. I even list every ride over about 100 miles I take.

Follow the advice given above! Do the maintenace as scheduled, keep a log of everthing that you do to and for the beast. You'll be glad you did even if it's only for historical pleasure when you're ancient and looking back on these halcyon days.:p
I have a thread going in which I'm questioning some noisy front brakes and a change in fuel consumption. These are very minor things and do not in any way affect the enjoyment or dependability of the bike. I have owned 5 previous BMW's and with out a doubt, this is the most capable and enjoyable motorcycle I have owned. It seems to know what to do when on less than ideal surfaces (Especially when I don't) At it's worst consumption rate, I can go over 300 miles and still have a gallon left in the tank. It is pretty darn comfortable for my 5' 10", fat frame. (A bit inseam challenged but so far no real difficulties;) . Basically it is a really fast Tank!
Just service when it is called out for, take a good walk around before starting the day and have a ball!:dance
I have only added a few TouraTech items: headlight and oil cooler guards, a protective cage for the left throttle body potentiometer, Can-Bus helper for accessories that I don't yet have, tank bag and a sheepskin seat cover.
I truly believe that you will love the GSA (or any GS for that matter)
