...someone says, "oh, you ride a motorcycle? That must be such a great HOBBY.":scratch
My wife referred to my motorcycle as a "hobby" the other day and that kind of made me cringe. I like to think that motorcycling runs deep into my soul so as to be more than just a hobby. More of a life style, right?. Some folks just don't get it.

JULIET:
'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.
It is not what other people think but what we admit to ourselves. :thumb

not really a lifestyle for me....its just something I do (so i guess it is a hobby)
I enjoy riding, I like bikes

Hobby? Repairing bikes, for example, is a hobby. Riding a bike can be touring, sport, commuting but certainly isn't a hobby. Not unless you're on the scale of Jay Leno does it become a hobby.

Why?

Agreed. I guess it's the perception of danger that makes people label motorcyclists as "crazy". Of course, these are often the same people who can drive a car, while on the phone, reading the sports section and listening to the radio. Now THAT is crazy!

When commuting, it's a means to an end.
When canyon carving, it's adrenaline pumping, stress reliever.
When broken, it's an unending source of frustration. (can be)
And finally, to me, it's a life style choice that can't be summed up in a few sentences.

What annoys me is the holier-than-thou people:
"Is there a time of the year where you don't ride your motorcycle?"
"You're the only person I know dumb/crazy enough to ride today."
"Nathan rode his motorcycle today."

That's my workplace line of daily questions... lately they get some smarly wise assed comments from me. " You DID NOT ride in today did you?" coming from outdoor power linemen and all weather hunters and fishers, I find this amusing. Crazy comes up in a lot of sentences:scratch

It's a hobby.
The moment it becomes a job of work, that's when the fun will go out of it.
While I feel that way about most things, I did have a job that consisted of riding year round for three years and I still consider it one of the best jobs I ever had!
In part was cause of the company I kept during that time, we were all riders at that job, rode in to work, rode for work and rode home, made more friendships there than any other job by far. So that right there just says to me how unique riding is and how deep it runs in my soul.
A hobby and a lifestyle.

Nope that doesn't bother me. What bothers me more is "you ride a motorcycle? Isn't that dangerous? I have a friend that died...." "Sorry to hear about your friend, but I know people died choking on food, I still eat though. Life is meant to be enjoyed, I enjoy riding so I do. Hopefully you have something that puts a smile on your face; if not can I recommend motorcycling?":thumb

Doesn't bother me. I freely admit to it. I then go on and tell them it is actually an incurable illness. It may go into remission but it always returns.

my thoughts exactly! Its all about perspective- if someone asks you about your "hobby" just smile and say "yup, its one of the most meaningful parts of my life!":)

I look at MC riding as cheaper than a shrink. It is a good way to unwind after a long day, plus I love the fact that I get 40-50 miles per gallon.

what put me over the edge one day at work, a co-worker saying:
"you are crazy, have to be! You know, four wheels are stable, two wheels are not stable!"
No, I work in a research group, and this individual is an engineer with a presumably PhD, and engineer for God's sake!
(the other day I was advised by another co-worker that took a work trip with him, never to let him drive if we travel together, really really bad experiences!)
I would call it for me, motorcycles are a hobby, maybe not tomorrow. In comparison to most of you, I am still a beginner rider.

I think the term "hobby" trivializes the activity of riding motorcycles, and I find the noun, as applied to our activity, annoying. Regardless of what the dictionary definition is, most people, I think, have a different picture of what it is that people are doing when they are engaging in a "hobby". There are other activities that are equally mis - described as "a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in for relaxation" [Mirriam-Webster]: what would Reinhold Messner's reaction be to a description of high altitude mountain climbing as a hobby?
It's really an avocation, and not in the same category as collecting this or that or making this or that.

To be bothered by the question requires far too much thought about whether I care what anyone else thinks about ANYTHING I do. If it isn't snowing, or the roads aren't icy, I just go out to the shed, get the bike out and ride it, usually somewhere between 10 and 450 miles. Is it a hobby"? 'Damned if I know. Is it an obsession? Most likely, but even worse, I fear it's an addiction for which there is no 12 step plan. "So tie me off and shoot me up, I'm going for a ride.
I put my 'BMW dealer on the same level as a dope dealer!Floyd

I really don't care what other people think about my motorcycle or about me riding it. I ride for myself and my own reasons, not the approval or disapproval of others.

Motorcycling is my hobby. I have a harder time with the characterization that is a 'Sport'.
Track days are a Sport. (and a bit of a hobby)

When the weather is getting cooler and I continue to ride, I get annoyed with the questions/comments on how cold it is. What's really funny is that these comments are coming from people who think nothing of going out when it is 20 degrees colder and ride their snow mobiles.
And to tell the truth, I get annoyed because it's the same people making the same comments every time.

Ah, yeah, but remember; they're usually in a bar every 15 minutes pounding down another drink. 'Snow Harleys', as it were ... :stick

You've never snowmobiled up here, have ya? Distance between bars on the trail is a bit more than that so they stop on the trail, light a small fire, have their beverage and a hot dog, put out the fire and then go another 20 minutes til the next beverage break. :)

Maybe because the definition of a 'community' in Alberta is different than it is in Wisconsin. Around here, an intersection gets named as a community if it has one or more bars and at least one house. :bottle

Jeez, I thought I just told ya. We drink more here. :drink Lots more. :hungover
FWIW, the particular latitude at which I live is probably quite close to that of the average Canadian (given that the largest part of the population is in southern Ontario). Manitowoc's latitude (44º 13' N) is about 40 miles north of Toronto (43º 40'N). :cry
