I was in the process of replacing my faulty speedometer and decided it would be a good idea to replace the cable as well.
When I removed the cable from the transmission end I noticed that the square end piece of the cable was missing. The new cable would not seat in the hole. I took a look with a flashlight and realized the square end of the speedo cable is still seated in the transmission end.
I have a few ideas on how to remove, but thought I might try the greater wisdom of the forum before I damage anything.
Thanks in advance.....

If I recall correctly the cable is stainless and has very low or no attraction to a magnet so if this is one of your thoughts, be careful. I would be inclined to try a very small dab of quick setting adhesive on the end of the cable that came out. Push straight down so the strands mesh a little and wait till the adhesive has set firm before pulling it out About 1 drop of 5 minute epoxy would probably be my choice but gel type superglue might also work well.

You might consider simply replaing the drive gear. If a new one is too expensive, there must be thousands of used ones available.

Paul- I think that will be the first thing I try.

Lostboy-Is it hard to get to?

Nope. Remove the bolt that holds the negative cable to the gearbox, lift the cable bushing out and extract the gear with a magnet. Be careful when tightening the bolt-the cover is easily stripped.
