Dear fellow riders,
I recently acquired a 76' R90/6 in rusty condition. There is a long to-do list and it is about 50% cleared. I know how to use wrench and read gages, but there are things simply need your experience input to help me through.
1. The centerstand keeps on falling at the "down" position. I re-installed the screws and the return springs connecting the centerstand and the frame following the Clymer manual. There must be something not right but I am not sure what. Is there something I missed?
2. The sidestand is removed and left a hole there. I bought a 86' R80 sidestand and try to match them up. Clymer manual did not mentioned if it is screwed, pined, and any other method to installed it other than "remove the front engine bar to make a way to remove the sidestand". Can someone show me how to install it or a picture showing the how it is installed.
Thank you!!

Will this help any? It's one of the on-line parts programs that gives exploded views of things...

Do you have the stock centerstand or aftermarket? I'm not sure a '86 sidestand is going to work. Here's what it looks like in the diagram:

Looks to me like there's enough of a difference that it might be hard to make it work.

if you can post a pic of how you have the c-stand springs attached someone could probably tell you where/how it is wrong. it's really just the springs that hold it up, and as long as the mounting bolts are installed, the rest of it will stay where it should.

This picture showing the flange with hole at the center for the sidestand. What do I need to mount the sidestand to that hole??

Front the back side. I like its retro style from the back. I will refinish the saddlebags.

It's been a while since I've been that close to a stock centerstand, but the springs that you have are oriented (it seems) for a Reynolds-type stand. I would think that the springs for the stock situation need to pull the stand up and back, not up and forward.
I just looked at my /2 and see where a spring can go forward and still work. It's just a question of the angle of the pull and where it goes over center.
There's always bungee cords!!
Sorry, no help...

I have a different model, but both of the springs on the centerstand look wrong. They need to go backwards, they are attached wrong. I changed my centerstand and side stand on my bike and I had to play around with them until they were right. What I did install a brown side stand first and then played around with the centerstand springs until it was right. I hope that helps.

Looking at the center stand set up on my R75/6, it is the same as your R/90. The springs are mounted correctly on the engine, you just need to attach them to the centerstand. The attachment point are small metal studs welded towards the top of the leg of the stand. You can see the attachment point in fig 2 of your photos, just below the exhaust pipe and just below the nut that attaches the stand to the frame. From what I call tell, the springs look sprung and probally will not attach or stay attached. As the center stand is raised up past the horizontal plane, the springs pull to keep the stand up.

The spring hanging there in the picture is what I took it off to check. Both springs were attached from the holes on frame to the stud on the c-stand.
It's good to hear Mark that it should be installed that way. Now it leads me to think that the springs should be the problem. I will try to shorten the spring and see if there is any change.
As for the side stand, I still can not get it how it is attached to the frame....

I have a slightly different bike (R75/6) and just installed a new sidestand. The only part that doesn't seem to make sense is the shackel (#17 on the URL found in the second post).
Can anyone tell me where the shackel goes?
Thanks,
Marley

The pin for your sidestand has fallen out of it's hole. This is a fairly common problem on older bikes. BMW used to sell an oversized pin to repair this. You might find one of these at an old dealer. I've also used cut-down old wheel axles when I couldn't get one of the oversized pins It must be welded in after either resizing the stand and frame or carefully machining the pin to fit both pieces.
