Hello all,
I am going to do the 4000 oil change on my '07 GS. I don't yet have the filter wrench that fits the oil filter. My question is:
If I were to sand the paint off the top of the new filter and "JB weld" a hex nut to the top, I could use one of the wrenches out of the tool kit to do the oil change without carrying the bulky filter wrench with me. I would really appreciate any comments about this idea. I know it would be a pain at first, but it would save time and space later..... Thanks, Jeff

or

I have em both....both work great!

How bulky can an oil filter socket (the one that fits the hex flutes stamped into the filter) be? 1" by 3"???? Find one with the rectangular plate on it, where the 3/8" ratchet would go. Instead of a ratchet, use your 17mm open end wrench (or, just carry a 3/8" drive ratchet). Avaialble at Advance Auto, Auto Zone, Wal-Mart ETC. $3-5 bucks. (take your filter to make sure you get the right size)
I mean-- what happens if the JB weld doesn't hold? Snap!! Now what??

$24.95!!! 6061 T6 aluminum!!! Feels good to hold!!
Cripesakes-- it's a friggin oil filter cup/socket!!
Send me $24.95! I'll send you one 1/3 that size that does the job just as well! Heck, I'll send two and give you a life time warranty! Free shipping!!
Wait, was that on the "for the BMW rider that has everything Christmas list"??
Right next to the $85.00 for a set of needle bearings for your rocker switches?
Try this unless you just must have a solid billet machined 6061 T6 aluminum one.
(does it come in a velvet lined leather case?)

$35.00!!! OH! OH!! I feel faint!!!
Ok, here's what you do-- take $35.00, buy 7, tell the clerk to keep the change, re-cycle 6 and have your picture taken getting an award for saving the planet. Use the 7TH one. Throw that one out somewhere in a pristine mountain stream or river (just to feel "bad"). Instead of sanding and JB welding your next oil filter, use that time to stop at an auto parts store or Wal Mart or maybe even the grocery store. Buy seven more-- and repeat
the process.
Hope everyone realizes I have had waaaay to much coffee this morning and just tugging your chain!

Not a bad idea. But just do some careful shopping at the auto supply stores to find the cheapy oil filter cup/socket that fits the filter for your bike.
Heck, some of the plastic ones you could even grind down on the outside to fit the filter recess. These cups don't have to be that strong because the filter should not be on tighter than 1/2 turn from first contact of the seal.
Another alternative. Find a commonly available filter (Napa, Purolator, Wixx, etc) with the right back pressure rating, the right thread, etc to match the stock filer, but in a longer version. If you don't mind the filter sticking down slightly out of the recess you'll have a filter that is easy to access with a strap wrench. You'll also get a filter with greater capacity. Just make sure it is rated for the same pressure drop across the filter as the stock shorter filter.

Ummm, if I recycle that way, could I possibly receive a Nobel Peace Prize for saving the planet?
:D

Hello all, again....
Well, I guess you get what you pay for..... I thought I could save a little money by taking a tip offered here and went the 17 miles to the local parts store. And, as directed above, I asked for their part T70413785A255 and THEY HAD IT!!!!! Yeah...... oops, guess what, apparently my '07 GS has a different filter than WOZARD has.... the filter wrench belonging to that number is at least 3/8 of an inch too small..... Oh well, guess I'll call Bob's and just order the correct one.... Thanks for all the help and ideas though....

Jeff,
I am sooooo Sorry!
I only used that as an example-- I didn't mean to imply that was the one. I don't have a clue what part number mine is. I just took my filter in and matched it up.
I (at least) did mention that.
Again-- sorry (boy-- do I feel like a jerk)

I got all youse guys beat.
I have an old strap-type wrench that I have used for years on both an old Acura and on my 2002 VW GTI. I think I paid $5 for it at Pep Boys several years ago.
I can reach the filter with this wrench if I go at such angle the the handle protrudes below the crossover-pipe right next to where it meets the header. The fit isn't perfect, but I get just enough swing to be effective and it's really not a difficult job at all- only need a few short swings to get the filter moving, or to get the new one torqued up right.
Those fancy-schmancy aerospace-aluminum handcrafted filterfondlers are kind of a rip-off I think.

I use the same strap wrench I've been carrying around for about twenty years! It worked on my Jetta, Passat, Volvo, Porsche and my R1200RT.

The pictured filter wrench shows on the Moto-Bins site as the proper one for the Hexhead and is shipped here for around $20.
Not bad....I think BMW wants $40 for theirs.

Uh . . . I just looked at Bob's BMW web page, and they have the BMW Hazet (aluminum) oil filter wrench for K-bikes and R-bikes for $19, their own wrench for $10, and their own wrench for the new K-bikes/R-bikes for $20. They also have the BMW wrench for the new K-bikes and R-bikes for $75! (What the heck can THAT be?) I've had a Hazet K/R wrench for 19 years, since I bought my K75S (I don't remember what I paid for it), and it's still going strong.
Maybe it's just me, but if I have a $10-15k BMW motorcycle sitting in the garage, I'm not sure I would spend much effort trying to cobble together an oil filter changing tool to try to save $20 over my lifetime. Just buy the right tool. ;)

FWIW, you could buy every size CheckerZoneBoys carries for <$35 and never need another oil filter wrench as long as you lived.

Hey guys,
I do have the set of every size filter wrench made. It is a really nice set and comes in a hard plastic box with individual pockets for all of them.... oh, wait a minute, it has every size filter wrench except one... you guessed it, the new 'GS filter is no where to be found.... Oh well, at least I can change my car filter, no matter what car it is....

I took my 05 GS BMW filter to a local auto parts store and none of the tools would fit it. I tried the JB welded nut on the filter and it worked, but I was always nervous about how reliable it was. I finally bought an aluminum wrench that works fine ( I don't remember where I got it, perhaps Bobs, but it wasn't an official BMW branded one)
