I bought the R1200 ST in August it is an 05 and it had 611 miles on it , It is now winter in NM and i am wanting to replace the BOSCH anemic horn with a freeway blaster. I AM NOT electrically inclined , but mechanically I am ,So my question is, Do I need to run a primary wire direct from the battery, install an inline fuse, mount a relay and then cut off the connector on the original horn and wire those wires into the new horn? I have bought the low tone horn and a relay from riderwarehouse. Am I in the ballpark ? Or a lost ball in high weeds? Also Rider has an inline fuse either a 2 amp or a 30 amp do I not need something in the 10 amp arena.? Finally the primary wire that i have is 10 ga is it too heavy? Thanks NM Sharpy MOA #135087

Lots of questions.. all in one paragraph..
- if you're adding a PAIR of horns - it depends. The RT early on came with wiring for twin horns. Dunno on the ST (anyone?) If there are dual connectors - then you don't need to add a relay.
- if there aren't dual connectors - it might be prudent to add a relay, since we don't know the ampere rating of the horn connector - and you don't want the body electronics (ZFE) turning the horn off because of too large a current draw (where it thinks it's a short circuit..)
- as far as fuses - what is recommended for the horn you purchased? 2A may be too little.. 30A is WAY too much. Probably a 5A or 10A fuse would be fine.
- 10 gauge wire is WAY oversize for this application. You likely can get away with 14G or at worst 12G (again - depending on the current draw you're anticipating.) The 10G will be difficult to bend, fasten, etc.

Do you have the round Fiamm? Looks like and about the same size as a stock horn? If so, I think all you need to do is change the connectors and hook it up. I may be wrong as I don't know the "draw" on the Fiamm. You could try and if it works great and if not. Here's how you do it. The solid brown is ground and the wire with a stripe is hot.
Get a 30AMP relay from radio shack. It'll have 4 flat connectors. one marked 30, hook the battery power with a 10-15 amp inline fuse to it, one marked 87, that goes to the horn, one marked 85, that goes to a good ground. one marked 86- that one you need to hook the brown with stripe wire from the horn to( you'll need to make it longer as I'd hide the relay under the fairing somewhere. This wire will "trigger" the relay,,,,making the horn beep.
I'm installing a Stebel on my bike an 05 R1200ST. It has to go in the space by the rear shock.
PM me if you have issues, I have a wiring diagram.
oh yea...14-16 ga wire is fine

My R12RT came with the standard scooter horn. I replaced it with two Fiamms by splicing into the orginal wire. No extra fuses or relays and have had no issues for 20K miles.

Thanks for the input , and I apologize after I posted the Questions and came back a couple hours later the permissions were not letting me reply. So Glenn fixed me up and now I am back on.
So to respond, no it is not the pancake one but the FIAMM low tone freeway blaster and it has a horn on it. My thoughts are now that if I have to go to all this re-wiring then I might just as well add the Hi tone and put duals on. I have the 12volt /40 amp relay and will pick up a inline 10amp fuse ASAP. The problem is getting the plastic side cover to pop free of the upper tank section to access the frame.any suggestions?? Thanks again for everything NMSharpy

It comes off by pulling it to the side. The front hooks around and there is a twist connector on the left side of the dash. If you remove the shield, brackets and front cowling, you can access the wiring and horns much easier. Good luck.

I just got my low tone freeway blaster yesterday from Aerostitch. What am I looking at as far as putting it in place of the stock horn? It looks like I may be able to just swap them out or does it require a little more splicing and such? R1200RT '2007 Thanks for the information

I had to splice in my new horn since the connectors are not the same. I did bolt it on using the stock BMW braket. I put a second horn on the cross frame behind the headlight using a rubber covered hose clamp. It is best to solder the splice and seal it with the heat shrink insulation. The dual horns are great.
