It probably only exists to meet insurance and licensing needs in various European countries.

Ok, I'll go out on a limb here and say....Yaeh!

I'm in agreement with NA on this one...Simply for one reason and one reason only.
What the release of that bike would have done do to the resale value of my 650 single.

Sorry if that sounds a bit self centered and all, but Yeah.....

Does that mean they will still have the single F650GS or not?

In all honesty if I were to be in charge of that decision I wouldn't import it to the US THIS YEAR either.

It would dilute sales from the XCountry - and more importanty - compete directly with the new F800GS. Give the 800 a year or two and then bring in the 650. And minus the insurance/licensing incentives in some other markets - doing either of those things in unnecessary.

We will always have the F650 with us!
Maybe in our hearts and wishes...!

No single F650. 2007 was it, bye bye for USA.

Only single will be the G650.
And after this year I believe they'll be making them in China...Not Austria.
The engine anyways.

I can't say this 100%, but looks like we're getting the F650GS in Canada. One of the Toronto dealers is advertising it. (see http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/details.aspx?vlotid=1297417&adid=6620364)

I'm shocked that we would get is and not the US given the size of our market. Unfortunately I didn't make to the bike show last weekend in Toronto and I have no idea of pricing. Just might have to get me one of them...

Cheers!

Glad I live close to Canada. Oh Canada!

Hmm, Montreal is only 200 miles away - a nice ride north to visit RedRider and take a look at the beastie.

The "650" is a definite go for Canada, the local dealer has advertised it in their newsletter already.

The Canadian BMW motorcycle market, although small, has always been treated more like the European countries by BMW. My '84 R100 had a factory kickstarter, not available in the US and my '97 F650 was a colour not available there either. With Canada being on the metric standard, it may be easier to produce European spec bikes with the labelling requirements for Transport Canada.

and in the early 80's, Canada had the R45, also available in Europe- (it was the little brother of the R65) and we never saw it for sale in the US at all.

Damn shame, cause its a great little bike. Here's my 1978 R45/N, 36,000+/- km's, and she's only been a US citizen for about 3 years.

Is the new F650 really 650+/- cc's or just a detuned 800cc engine? According to the BMW Motorrad International website it is a 798cc twin. So they just detuned the engine and went a little skimpier on the fitment?

I'm pretty sure the person at BMW NA is mistaken and confusing the single with the twin.. it was my understanding that the F650 twin will be imported to the US and Canada.. It's coming to Canada for sure and the price is unbeatable.

So far every site I've come across has listed the 2008 "detuned" 650 twin as not coming this year...To these here shores.

www.bikercafe.com gave a review of the F650 twin available in the UK, but so far I have not seen any mention of it in the US. Anyone know if Canada has it for sure?

From what I've read it's the 850 motor with 14 less HP. Why they call it a 650 is beyond me, must be some kind of half-assed marketing ploy.

It has a detuned F800GS engine with about 14 hp less. Still plenty of omph but the primary reason it is so good is there's NO buzziness of the F650GS single at highway speeds. Hardly any vibration at all.
I'd buy one if allowed to bring it across the border. Are we allowed: EPA. DOT, etc?? We might see it in late 2009.

Last week I called a dealer in Canada.

The F650 twin cylinder will be released in Canada on March 8th.
