We all have been on roads that could use additional lighting to help guide us through odd or unexpected curves at night. Based on the pictures in the article it appears these would increase corner awareness for drivers. Intellectually this seems like a boon for riders also, yet I have reservations.
In previous Morning Reads, there have been articles about road stripping brightness and the implications for rider control and safety. The trade off for riders in improved reflective road striping is a loss in tire adhesion as the brightness of the stripping increases. The challenge for the prepared night rider will be using the improved corner information while managing any resulting adhesion risks that come along with it.
Perhaps the nagging fear is a father’s paternal fear for what squids from the dark side of riding will do with the improved light.
