How many more of the original litter are still kicking? Anyone??
All US spec K75Ss were frame (VIN) numbered consecutively, starting with the last six #s of 150001.
The original litter from May of 1986 was 150001 thru 150325.
The last of the line was 154600 that was born in September 1994
Paul Glaves has 0019 (it figures he would have the oldest one)

I seem to have found several places to stash bikes. Another K75 resides in Kansas - occasionally ridden by our son.
My disease has recently progressed to the "stash-a-bike" phase. My Triumph now resides in Utah with my MC mechanic son. A quick $49 plane ride away during the heat of summer.

I rode my 1988 K-75 to my first day on the job with Ford Motor Company nearly 19 years ago. It is my intension to ride it out my last day (hopefully 11 years from now and not sooner but,....).
The K is yonger then it's stable mate, a 1967 R-50/2, and sees much more road time then it's Grandpa. Still healthy and my first choice.

Does anyone have an '87 K75S (Silver wheels, Engine cover, trans, etc.) with the last 4 #s of the VIN higher than 0957? (build date 4/87)
Or an '88 K75S (Black wheels, engine covers, trans, etc.) with the VIN lower than 0958. (build date 6/87)
I believe that is when they made the change over for the model year for the K75S, but would appreciate any further info.

Sadly I killed my first 1986 K75T back in 1990 with 91,000 miles on it. It was the first one sold in Houston through Cycle Shack. At the time of it's demise (operator error ) I already had a second one in the stable, and the insurance company paid for my third one which I bought sight unseen. Both are still alive and well, and living in the Northwet.
The sight unseen bike was advertised in the MOA flea market and I wanted to go to the Flagstaff National but didn't have the time to ride both directions, so I flew to Albuquerque New Mexico from Houston picked it up, rode to the rally and rode home.
No vin # handy as I'm at work.

Hi guys. Original owner checking in with 150825, Colombia Silver K75S bought at Mischlers BMW in Beaver dam WI (one of the supporting dealers at the West Bend Rally). Born-on date I think is March 87, from litter #3.
The way this was described to me by the dealer, and this may just pertain to US imported bkes, is the first litter were ALL red bikes, second litter was all Black bikes, and the last litter of 1987 was all Colombia Silver, which was somewhat smaller than the first two litters (300 each of red and black and the remainder was the Colombia silver, < 200??
I am always interested in the Colombia Silver bikes, I am trying to find out if they were ALL like mine, kind of unique: No handles on the side of the tail section, just an oval plug where the top of the handle would mount to the tail, and a hole filler plug for the bottom hole, it did have the "hollows" where you would grab the handle, which I flushed out on mine (Holt BMW did the work for me), further it had the accessory solo seat straight from the factory, and no rear pegs, although it was easy to add these as it had the same side plates.
Intersted in hearing from other Colombia Silver 87 owners.

I misunderstood you were referring to months = litter. I am curious about the info I received, the dealer (Art Mischler) is a real straight shooter and I'm sure he didn't make it up. Could have been misinformed i suppose. But now I am curious about it. If you think about it, (or at least if I think about it), have you ever seen an 87 S that wasn't red, black or the occasional Colombia Silver?? I mean a stock painted one.
I see elsewhere you have the number of '87s as 957, which would mean if Art was right about 300 red, 300 black, and remainder are Colombia silver, that we would be seeing MORE Colombia Silver rather than LESS. Were 87s made for 9 months? maybe it is 3 months instead of 300 bikes??

Wish it were clearer or at least larger. This is 150825 on the showfloor of Mischler BMW/HD summer 1987, before I picked it up. I didn't even recognize it as a K75S at first, I was looking for a red or black bike! I have other pics that will show this better, but note this bike still has it's stock seat (solo), no rear pegs, no passenger grab handle. I am trying to determine through this thread if ALL the Colombia Silver bikes were like this or not. If you are the original owner it would help me out to know. It would be important to know if it is possible the dealer added the rear handles and pegs and a different seat before you had a chance to buy the bike or not. I could see a dealer having one like this and not being able to sell it as-is and adding these items later. OK, I have other pics to post now.

Pic #2
Here it is at home, just arrived from Mischlers with it, DAY ONE. This was in the spring off 1988, Mischlers let me make payments on it starting summer of 1987 and held it for my until Spring '88.
I took the lower fairing off to add some of that no-chip tape to the front of the "chin". I know this is when I took it as it was only like this for a very short time; no tail section "luggage" bracket yet, no saddle bag brackets, and still has the solo seat (which I still have).
OK, up above the "coves" (the crater underneath where the passenger grab handle would be) you can see above the cove it has a black block off piece for the screw holes to attach the grab handle. Sort of in front of the bottom of the cove you can see a round plug that covers the one hole to attach the bottom of the handle.
You can also notice the stock side plates without rear pegs installed, I had to buy the rear pegs!
Learning curve ahead of me at this point was pretty steep, I had the danged thing on it's side several times the first year due to errors in taking it off the center stand. Always, always get ON the bike and get it down off the stand is what I learned the hard way. I kept pulling it off the stand with the nifty handle and leaned over away from me and onto it's side. Never seemed to damage much, luckily. It was love/hate for quite awhile. At this point, I guess you can see the bike and I "understand each other", heh heh. I was often asked what I'd call the color of the bike, I'd reply "the color of SPEED!"

OK, this is a couple years down the road. Yours truly sporting his System 2 helmet and some Olympia glove I wish I hadn't later tried to dry out on a heater in my moms spare junk room. They were toast! But nice gloves. OK, by this time I had CC Products do the big valve job on the engine. I can tell this because it has an ugly-ass Supertrapp muffler, which looked and sounded about equally as bad. Later on I got a Lufty sewer-pipe excuse for a megaphone muffler (which I still have. PS: WHAT????). I haven't modified the tail section yet, I'll try getting a picture up of the modification next. In this pic I still have the "T" seat, which I eventually wore out and went to a Corbin. You can see the tail rack is added too. The saddle bags are what BMW had back in '87-88. I had the lids painted a Mercedes color called Blue Green, which at the time I liked as a contrasting color. Looked OK I guess. I can't remember exactly where the picture was taken, but I think in Door County, WI (north east from where the West Bend Rally was, the "thumb" of WI that sticks out into Lake Michigan).

Sorry I can't get this any better looking or larger. If I try to get the resolution any better the file is too large. I'm happy I am getting ANY of these pictures up, especially using a scanner to complicate things. Just a nice picture from a trip up to the Keweenaw Peninsula in Upper Michigan. Would be roughly in the area of Eagle harbor I think, just a little roadside turnoff area park. maybe some Yoopers can nail the area down better, really nice nice area to take a trip to. Looks like the bike is set up like the previous picture, has that hideous "coffee can" Supercrapp muffler on it. Sounds like a coffee can full of rocks AND angry bees.

This is currently what the bike looks like, except I took this pic with the original solo seat on the bike. I currently have a Corbin dual canyon seat on it. You can see the (LOUD) Luftmeister pipe on it. Did I mention it's LOUD??? You can see the bit of flushing I had Holt do to it "alot" of years ago, probably 15 years or more.

Cool! You're OK in my book!
Sometime I need to rummage around my moms house (where I lived for quite awhile after I bought this bike, long story) and see if I have those parts somewhere, I do remember seeing them. I'd really almost have to get a new tail section and side plates to make it look somewhat stock again. I'm pretty happy with it as-is though.
Unless I found out it is extremely rare.
But then again, one thing I've learned is that JUST because something is rare, DOESN'T mean it's valuable, and I think that can be said for all K bikes in general.
I've always loved this color, just unusual enough to get comments. People (BMW people, anyways) don't believe it's the stock color! Which is why it'd be interesting to find out if the "color batch" story is true and just how rare this color is compared to red and black. Don't tell me I have to start going to rallies and writing down colors and VIN numbers! Of ONLY 87 S's no less!!

As an aside, has anyone EVER seen a stock-painted US spec 87 K75S in anything OTHER than red, black or Colombia Silver???? That would disprove the color-batch story right there. Wonder if anyone had an experience such as seeing the color chart for BMW cycles and requesting a particular color, and what the dealer reply would have been?? "Sorry you get what you get."????

Hey Gilly, I've got a question for you. I've got a '91K75s (sorry, not original litter), and just bought a solo seat, looks to be pretty much the same as yours (BMW stock). I had the Corbin stock seat on it, bought the solo as a spare while I send my Corbin to be recovered. When I took of the Corbin off to switch out the mounting gear, I noticed that Corbin had threaded posts installed on their seats, while the BMW seat has the reverse, square M6 nuts embedded in the seat. No problem, I just put some M6 bolts in, however, the back seat hinge has me a little baffled. The Corbin had one hinge, and I can't see what secures it to the seat...another hinge part? a simple nut and bolt won't do it, looks like there's something I'm missing. BTW, nice S!

Nice! Search this forum for "K75S Original Litter". What is the last 4 numbers of your VIN? That will tell when your bikes "birthday" was and which of us has your "littermates".
What state are you located in?
:dance :dance :dance
Last 4 digits are 0106. You have 3. Wow. Have you ridden the K1100lt and if so, what did you think? I love the K75 but think I would like more upright and wind protection. I have barbacks mounted which put me more upright than stock. The 1100lt looks massive compared to the 75S. I'm in So Cal, Orange County area.
Thanks, Brad
106!!!! Our bikes are littermates!! Our bikes are from the "original litter" (first month of production). Your bike was built in the first two weeks of production of U.S. Spec. K75Ss. May of 1986.
My bike was 25 bikes in front of yours on the assembly line.
That makes seven from the original litter of 325 that are owned by MOA members and have responded that they are still alive.
They only made 4600 Ss through all ten years of production. I would bet that there are considerably less than 3000 left based on the frequency that I see them being parted out on e-bay.
The k1100lt has a reputation of radiating alot of heat onto your legs and some have said that that factor alone is enough to not consider it for warm climates (SoCal).
You don't need wind protection. What you need is to wear earplugs. The S windscreen is better know as a wind noise generator. It puts turbulent air right at the base of your helmet and makes it VERY noisy. It actually gets quiet when you stand up! Try the earplugs. It makes riding these bikes a true joy. You will appreciate the smoothness even more.

I'm confused....isn't Marakesh Red a bright, solid red a little on the light side? My
original litter 0231 was called 'Lava Red" I believe, a darker metallic red that quickly
faded to orange, but was drop dead gorgeous when new. (Can't read my pain code.)
The only other Lava Red K75s's I've seen were also 87's, then the 88s and later were
the brighter solid red. Congrats tomsljr on owning the S born right after mine! It is
also a daily rider, 180+k, not even close to concours but amazingly reliable & fun.

The brand of paint was Glasurit (a subsidiary of BASF I believe).
IF the COLOR SCHEME number under your seat is 643 (Marakesh Red), then the Glasurit PAINT CODE is 222. Single stage.

At this years NorCal 49er Rally there were at least 8 K75Ss.
Unfortunately we were only able to get 4 of them together at any one time (for the Concours) as half of them were always out riding at any given time either on the poker run or running up to Tahoe for lunch or just enjoying all the great roads in the Gold Country area of the Sierras.
Two more Ss were represented there in two awesome custom bikes from Special K's out of Northridge Ca. One was using an '87S frame that he had bought from New Jersey and the other one had started as a salvaged S that he had to replace the frame on. You can eventually check out his work at: http://specialks.net/ once he finishes his website.
In all, we had 19 early K-bikes in the bike show, the most of any of the 11 classes. That's a switch!

As far as the bags go:
1. Undo latch that holds bag to bike.
2. Pull out bottom of bag until latch JUST clears the square hole it was in.
3. Slide bag towards rear of bike until it stops (about 1").
4. Lift bag off (will take some wiggling and tongue twisting).
To install reverse above
Step 3 is the part that is not intuitive and frustrates novices.

I bought mine new in April 87 at Razee Cycles in Rhode Island. It's black # 150596, built in October 96.
I sold it in July 2002 with 45K miles on it. I made a deal with the buyer that if he ever decided to sell it, he would offer it to me first. Well 7 years later, almost to the day, he contacted me that he wanted to sell it. I bought it back from him and rode it
350 miles home this past Saturday. It still runs like a Swiss Watch, but is need of some routine maintenance and a cosmetic makeover. It now has 57K miles on it.

Well the title is wrong. ALL U.S. spec K75Ss with the silver drivetrain were sold as 1987 models even mine that was built in May of 1986.
There were NO 1986 U.S. Spec K75Ss.
Your bike wasn't even built until February 1987, two months before the end of 1987 model production.
Someone in your DMV did a typo.
The Columbia SILVER is a bluish silver. They did not make a BLUE in 1987. The paint scheme number (on the 1"x2" tag) on the top of the rear body section under your seat should be 616.
See posts #63-66 in this thread. Those are pictures of 150825 (Gilly's old bike) built in March of 1987 (the month after yours). That is the color that they were building during that time frame. It should be the same color as your bike. Columbia Silver #616.
Post pictures, either here or at the thread at the top that says "Post a picture of your K-bike".

My 1992 K75S is a Louisiana bike that I just bought from the second owner. 20833 miles at this time. This one is 153492. The paint is Metallic Blk. I've wanted a K bike for 25 years. I was visiting London in late fall of 1984, and one evening I strolled past a BMW bike showroom and I first laid eyes on a spotlit Flying Brick. I was awestruck at the sensational lines of the K bike. Now I've made one mine.

The number on your bike (616) is the paint SCHEME #. The actual paint CODE for paint SCHEME #616 is Paint code #204.

Bev,
Welcome to the family :hug. You're going to really enjoy that bike. Two of your litter mates have already checked in:
Quickdraw from Stockton, California has 154455:brad
Doglips from Ironwood , Michigan has 154467:brad
Both are Dakar Yellow and born April 1994
That litter (April 1994) had 100 bikes. I believe they were all Dakar Yellow.
The Dakar Yellow branch of the family is starting to really make their presence known.:brad:brad:brad
Just happened to read the couple last pages of this Original Litter thread---guess I always assumed it was only about '86 K75s---so I got out my records and lo and behold, my '94 Dakar Yellow K75S is #154483! Suppose it was also born that same April along with the others.;)
Mine won't be Dakar Yellow much longer though; the tank and rear rack are now polished bare aluminum while the rest of the body panels will be sanded and prepped for a totally different color of PPG Deltron soon.
PS: Hi Beverly; Congratulations on picking up my bike's cousin at the National. You may remember contacting me a while back about a possible bags trade---hope you found some others that were the right color (or perhaps you'll get your bags painted to match?). Anyway, I do hope you managed to get your saddlebags off; once you attain the knack for doing so it's a whole lot easier thereafter.
Best regards,

Any idea how I would go about getting some touch up paint? She's acquired a few nicks here and there that need to be touched up. Any thoughts I figure the dealer would know but would probably not be the cheapest method.
98lee

The touch up paint is NLA (no longer available) from BMW for our bikes. The availability dried up 2-3 years ago. The best you can hope for is a dealer with some left over old stock or someone with an old tube.
I believe this is your color:
BMW Part # 51910144544 Metallic Touch Up Pencil Set King Blue (270) NA
BMW called Royal Blue Metallic (scheme code 680) King Blue Metallic (scheme code 680) in some markets. Also called Koenigsblau in German.
The Glasurit (original paint manufacturer for BMW, now a division of BASF) paint code for these colors is 270. You might be able to get something through a Glasurit paint distributor (look on the internet).

This is less than 100 away from my old K75. Still (always) wondering about the question I had about the Colombia Silver S's; that is, if they all were original w/solo seat and ne grab handles like mine was. Probably never really know as it was easy to make them "like all the others".
Keep wishing I would have kept mine, although I do sort of keep in touch with the new owner, and I did ask him for "first right of refusal" if he decides to sell, so I can hope for that.
As far as riding though, a short hop on my GT usually cures the longing for it back, but in the off season, all I have are dreams of riding anyways........

I think about 1988 the rear brake reservoir was moved up under the plastic since the sunlight degraded the plastic. There might of been a recall or at least a mod offered.

Question.....do all the early K75s bikes have a rear brake reservoir that is exposed to the sunlight?
According to BMW's microfiche, the rear brake reservoir was moved 4 months into the '88 model year (9/87), so the only US K75Ss to have the exposed reservoir would be the '87s and the first five or six hundred '88s. BUT, both my first month '88 (built 6/87 and my second month '88 (7/87) came with the round reservoirs under the battery cover so, I would conclude that ALL '88s had the newer reservoir.
New reservoirs are still available: 34311451863 FLUID RESERVOIR, SQUARE CORNERS - Up to 09/1987 $20.43

Of course owners could change things out to the newer stuff. On mine I had the coolant tank replaced to the kind with the bulged-out window instead of the clear tube that remained clear for only a couple years. The new style never got coudy or dirty looking and was a direct retrofit. Just for example.

Does your registration actually say '95 model? Was it first sold in 1994?
If so, I was incorrect in my earlier statement that Ss were only built for the US through the '94 model year. When your bike was built #154547 was after the summer model year change. So, I guess BMW actually made 75 bikes for the '95 model year in August and September of '94.
Yours is a US spec bike because the VIN ends in 15xxxx. Non- US-spec Ss ended in 10xxxx and 21xxxx.
A few differences that I can think of are no side reflectors and the tank not vented to the crankcase (a good thing to change on US bikes), KM instead of miles on the speedo and a headlight shutoff switch. Nothing really substantial, but BMW decided to give US-spec bikes distinct VIN # sequence.
