Last summer I ordered a set of Metzler ME880 170/60/r17 tires for my r1200rt and went from Houston to Prudoe Bay and back. I was very satisfied with their wear and performance as I got nearly 15k miles on them. I can no longer find this tire available and am sick of replacing my Pilot Roads every 6k miles. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you sure that bike takes a 170/80 R17 tire?
I know the previous models take a 170/60 R17 tire - a common size - and that they are available in an ME880 tire - just bought 3 last month.
I would have thought that bike took a 170/60-17 rear and a 120/70-17 front.

Thanks

I should have asked where you purchased the tire?
Thanks

The R1200RT takes a 180/55R17 rear tire which Metzler does not provide in the ME880 model.

If I had that bike I would try a 170/60-17 a bit gingerly recognizing that I had gone one size different.
And a general comment - leave it up to good old HUA BMW to go to an oddball tire size - or is it now a common Japanese bike size? I do know that when they came out with the K1100LT it had an oddball tire size, and the R1100RS and early R1100RTs had an oddball 18" rear tire.

Good advise about trying it "gingerly".
I recently installed the 880 in the 170/60 on the back with a Z6 on the front.
Traction isn't what it should be on the back. Mostly in the rain or when passing and going over the painted center lines.
The good news is that the tires have 5k on them and still look new.
I think I will be taking the rear off though and going back to the Z6.

Glad you did it - now I don't have to try.
I looked at an R1200RT last night with the rear tire in mind. Smaller doesn't look like a good idea - ignore my prior post. One size wider looks like it would clear but Metzeler doesn't make that size 880 either.
Back to my original hunch - HUA BMW.

I found the tire several places. I had no issues with the ME880 when i went from Houston TX to Prudhoe Bay AK last summer...18 days 11,500 miles. Four days in the Yukon and BC were in driving rain, very treacherous conditions. I had no issues the milage is significantly better than the Pilot Road. ME880=14k vs Pilot road=7k.
For my money I feel it is a great value.
