Can the rear mono shock on the R100GS or PD be re-built? What seems to be the life of a stock BMW shock? And what are the most reasonable aftermarket shocks to consider?

There's a guy down in Melbourne Australia that rebuilds stock BMW shocks..other than that no. Stock shocks last about 20-30K miles depending on how much you abuse them?

Check out Bruno's Machine Shop in Iron Bridge Ontario. Brunos.com(?). In addition to shock re-builds, he does trannys and valve jobs as well as the circlip thing.

There are a number of shops here in Oz that rebuild them successfully.

So it is doable. try to find some one local.

Had my rear shock rebuilt by Bruno.us on '91 GS after 100K , Did a great job - added new heavier spring also added schrader valve to replenish nitrogen as necessary.
I've had other brand rear shock on this bike bit didn't last as long as the original. The shaft in the original BNW shock is a lot thicker than any aftermarket one I've seen.
Pretty cheap to rebuild. This one in for 55kms so far and no leaks etc
