I have an '85 K100RT and my speedo cluster has been kaput for an entire riding season. I'm looking for a new one and wondering what other models have a compatible cluster. I just want to replace the whole thing rather that mess around with the fixes I've read about in various places.
Will a '88 k75 rt unit work?

There was no such thing as an '88 K75RT (they came out in 1990), but the cluster will work just fine. Look for little air vents on the back covered with gore-tex membrane.....that is the cluster you want.

hmm? someone has a 1988 K75RT parts bike in the flea market... I wonder what it really is?
I'm not familiar enough to know years...thanks.
Anyways, I sent him an email asking if he still has the cluster--anything to save 800$

According to the VIN #, that bike is a 1988 K75T or possibly C built for the U.S. in August of 1987.
It should have the upgraded gortex vented cluster, as they came out starting with the '87 models. Hope that clears things up a bit.

Awesome. Thank you. Hopefully he still has it. I work at a shop now, but our price is still 710.00.

The '85 K cluster was made to use with the very odd and unreliable thermal sensing fuel gauge the '85 (and '84, '83 in Yurop) had.
Like lots of other things - things on the '85 K100 tend to be a tad unique.

I'd suggest going to www.realoem.com - put in the VIN# of your bike. Look up the PN for the instrument cluster, highlight it and copy it. Then return to the page on ROEM that you select vehicles with, and look way down the bottom left corner. You can look up partnumbers - paste the PN you copied into the box, and it will tell you exactly what bikes use the same cluster.
Dog helps those who help themselves.. and sometimes I'll help them help themselves.. :D

IIRC Elsie Smith put a new cluster on her '85 K00RT before Iron Butt many years ago. I don't think she had to change anything else?

If she didn't change anything else - she had a late '85 - or she'd had a later model tank installed (not trivial either since the mounting is different..)
Instrument cluster to 4/85, PN: 62111459927
Instrument cluster from 4/85: PN: 62112305252
And K's with ABS had their own (starting 8/88,) PN: 62112305254
