I understand registered owners having access to all of the posts on the site. But just playing around with google, I now realize anyone who googles your screen name comes up with a lot of posts. Sure would be nice if that was not so. I am thinking you should have to be registered to read the forum and find a way to keep the search spiders out. I for one will be more careful and less candid. Google lasts a long time. Sorry can't find the soap box icon!

The answers are there, somebody needs to incorporate it into the html code for the forum. If that can be done.

Wise words - there is a tremendous amount of knowledge and information on these forums, would be a shame to make it readable only by MOA members.

How about the thread "what are you drinking tonight". Sorry might be a little paranoid but things can come back to haunt you. Perhaps there needs to be more of a definition between public and private? I enjoy unfettered speech but when the record last years.... Kinda like the difference between slander and libel if memory serves me.

Kind of like a public conversation and a private one I guess? I'd certainly agree that maybe a few of the areas could benefit from being member only, I'd also suggest it would be a great shame to make them all that way.

there is a very bright definition right now - what folks post on the boards is readable by the general public.

Agreed. Way beyond my capability though!

Ok... Things "posted" on the bulletin board are for all to see. Private conversations should be reserved for "private messages" and direct emails only.

You should have no expectation of privacy on the internet. That is just the way it is. In fact, the expectation of privacy doesn't exist much anymore. If you are out in public, you can expect to have cameras recording your movements. Of course, all in the name of safety and security. Go thru toll booths, you are being monitored. Use your debit or credit card, those records are subject to government inquiry. Phone records private? Think again.

The world has changed, we just need to understand how.

SIBUD makes a very good point. Why should we expect privacy in a public place.

Wise words indeed, but I disagree with the context.

It makes about as much sense as saying, Just Say No.

When people write on the membership only part of the website there is a precieved expectation of limited view. If not, the Organization should tell folks up front, everything they post is public record.

A lot of people dont know, and it is not fair to them.

I second this...my expectation is that anything I put online is available for anyone with a computer. Heck I tell friends to google my username if they want to know what I'm up to...it's all out there. :brow

I am not sure I would agree with you on this one - the only thing on the BMW MOA message boards as far as I know that is "Member Only" is the ability to create a member/user account and post on the forums. That said, that there are more than a couple folks curious about this, it wouldn't hurt to remind folks.

Yet. It takes about a month for the google crawlers to get its hands on content.

Try pulling up the forum without your cookie and you will not be able to get Clubhouse, Chartered Clubs and Local Events, Gear, Don't Go There, and Doghouse.

For a test I came to the forum without logging in. Everything except "clubhouse", "don't go there", and "doghouse" were listed. These three don't get picked up by google or any other search engine. I double checked by searching for things I posted in clubhouse a while back, and they are not out there. As long as these three remain "members only", that content is safe.

BTW: It's amazing how fast things get grabbed by sites such as google; I DID find posts I had made only a week ago on here that google found, already.

You should make sure your friends that wrote in the ..."Are You a Homebrewer" thread know that. I bet there are not more than two people in the organization who can quote their state's homebrewing law, without looking it up on Google first.

I understand that all of anyones personal information is accessible by some. My objection is that it is accessible to all very simply. Would at least like to see some of the forum a little more difficult to see, more than a simple goggle search. For all those who have mentioned they like to drink or run the freeway at 80-85-155 or any other comment that we all understand is meant in fun and not malicious. Um lets see goggle quick search: says here you drink and speed all the time, seem to have a little road rage against Harley riders and cagers.

Maybe overreacting but was a little surprised at the return from a search how many posts came up.:sick

Some time ago on the Horizons Unlimited site a couple of people shipped their bikes to Vancover Canada. When they got there Canadian customs did a web search and found their website where they talked about going to work for a short time. They did not have work visas.
That comment on their website held them up in customs for a while.
