View Full Version : Thinking of starting a riders group in Chicago 'burbs

Apologies if this has been done before but I could not find what I was looking for and I want to test the waters for interest.
There are three things that I look for when I am looking at motorcycle tours: Friends, Support, and Expertise. Isn’t that why we pay for tours but that is not what tour operators advertise – they advertise the experience first and all else second. “See Copper Canyon … yada yada … and the friendly and experienced guides… yada yada"
So … I was thinking that I am satisfying what I want out of travel as an indirect result of paying the premium of an organized tour. I suspect others do the same. All we want is to go out and ride off the beaten path– swap stories – have a few drinks – and have someone call 911 if we break a leg
Let’s form a group for the express purpose of getting out there and supporting each other on a motorcycle without paying that premium. Here is my proposal:
• Let’s get together for an extended trip once year – about 5 days or so
• Optionally, overseas trip proposal - once every year – go/no-go depending on interest, e.g. ring tour of Iceland for two weeks
• Plus, twice a year – long weekend trips somewhere agreeable to most
That’s it. We all are busy people and it’s tough to find time to ride but if we agree to just a few ground rules – we’ll be on our way:
• We pay our own way
• Simple majority wins
• We try to make the trips
• We take care of each other on the road
We all have a common purpose that will satisfy our individual goals. In this way, we’ll be getting exactly what we want out of trip: Travel is better with friends; there is someone to help or call for help when things go wrong. What we are missing is the local and practical expertise that an experienced tour operator can provide but with all things being equal, I would prefer to learn with friends rather than from a tour company.
I'll sponsor the website and serve as an administrator. All are welcome regardless of location or bike.

I'm game for a winter ride but I can hang until March or April
Anyway - I'm game for a winter ride but I can hang until March or April. I have been thinking about a theme for a first ride - maybe geocaching
Plus - it gives me an excuse to finally buy a GPS
http://www.geocaching.com/faq/ : "Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache."
To be honest - this could be fun - work in a little camping and you got yourself an adventure
or... something more sedate like 3 days, 3 Cities, and three pub crawls

I'll put some more thought into over Thansgiving and I will try to loop in some other riders but lets toss out a date for the first ride : April 11, 12, and 13th.
I'll just be coming back from a trip from the UK and will be aching for a ride - anywhere... in the continental US.
Any suggestions? Any Ideas for the longer trip?

Isn't a 1985 bike a little young to be identified as "vintage"?
'Scuse me, I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I've been trying to figure out what classic, vintage, and antique means when referring to BMW motorcycles. The Internet is a mass of confusion regarding these terms.
I thought 30 years old represented the time frame for vintage, and I thought I qualified as an "antique":wave
Whada ya say?
Might your new group cross the Missouri line? - I realize that's a ways out of the suburbs.

As far heading MO goes - as long as we are riding out of Illinois then that is good ride. You're welcome to meet up wherever the first trip is headed... Just give me a ring if you want to come and I'll make arrangements.

So - I was talking to a friend at work and he had an idea that he has been tossing around with his riding buddies - Ring Tour around Lake Michigian.
It has crossed my mind before but never seemed to find the time. Plus - North of Green Bay on the West and North of Traverse City are an unknown to me.
So what you think: An easy introductory ride.
After that - backcountry roads to Alaska???
First ride on April 11, 12, and 13th
Ride around Lake Michigian:

Small world - Starved Rock is just a 1/2 hr south of me. Great Hiking - It would be great ride; I have been meaning to ride out that way but since its so close then I typically head up to WI or MI instead.
May it is for the Ring around Lake Michigian. Should be fun! Plus if you just came back from Starved Rock - its below freezing this weekend - you'll be fine in May.
Anyone else in? Its months away so there is plenty of time to set aside a long weekend in May.

So we can set a rally point somewhere in Illinois as a starting point to meet - may'be other points if there is interest coming from out of town, e.g. Southwest MI or UP MI.
I have been looking at some info from other sites to plan the route and well... Northwest Ind and Southeast IL are just plain unpleasant.
1) This still leaves the cooridor on the souhthern part of the lake. I'm thinking that the IL riders meet in Schaumburg and take 355 South Extenstion to I80 East to Route 45 South to Route 30 East to I 49 North and finally up to I12
2) Or - take the usual - 294 South over 80/94 to 90 then Red Arrow Hghy to I12
3) Or - take option 1 by taking country roads - longer but more fun but then again this is not the most scenic part of the ride.
I'd vote for 2: Take the slab and get it over with. We get to the nice part of the ride that much sooner. After I65 - 90 opens up its gets better the further we get from Chicago

Sounds like a plan! I'm curious about the celebrity.
I am trying to round up some folks at work too - a bar is always a draw
Check what day and time is good for you and the folks you are in contact with - we can agree on a location later. I have suggestions on wheere depending where people are coming from... Evanston; there is also the Chicago Brauhaus down in Old Town off Lincoln Ave or Ghost Bar at Nine in the Loop - or the local hangout with $1 bottles:bottle

I hope it's not cold in the UP, and when crossing the Mackinaw bridge with the cold winds. I am working on the heated vest, to assist me in cold weather ride.
I live in Gurnee, and work in around Buckley Road and Waukegan Rd (Rt 43), few miles north of Lake Forest.
The only problem with option 2 that I see is riding along with the truckers on the tight spot of 80/94.

that the UP area generally colder than Chicago any given time, perhaps we come to it in June; but we utilize the early May to go either towards southern IL to Shawnee Forest.
Just another option if we need to balance weather with our riding desire.
Memorial Day long weekend, CRBMW hosts a ride to La Crosse, WI.
BTW, MotoWorks in Chicago is giving away 10% discount on Gerbing gear. It seem like I'll be opting to take the advantage and buying myself a vest and socks. I like the pant liners but have not heard too much positive response, as the wires get pretty hot near the knee area. My bike does not provide any kind of shield to air striking my legs. Dang.

I'm open - as long as we agree and ride. Rationally, it makes sense to do a northern ride later and head south earlier in the year. But riding a motorcycle is my escape from reason :thumb
I never considered the pant liners - I picked up schoeller thermals undies http://www.schoeller-textiles.com/default.asp?cat1ID=128&cat2ID=134&pageID=227&emotionstate=0&emotionID=8&langID=2 at the rally this year. I used the "hybrid", and got close up, and it's not easy to access. Looks like the entrance is from Rt. 176 through Shagbark Road, or if you come from Rt. 41, then enter into Washington Avenue, which turns into Shagbark Road.
Well, I went directly to maps.google.com, and it shows on the east side of Rt 41 versus the west side. Now, I'm more confused - one address but two different ways to map it :banghead

I rode solo around Superior & Lake Michigan last September (7 days, 3,000 miles). I found few writups on the trip although many have made the route. I traveled every peninsula except for Copper so I may try to catch the RA just so I can check that one off to. I'm already planning a 10 day Gillette trip so the RA trip will be short. If you Chicago area riders want a ride along the river down here, I'm game. You're meeting place is to far north for me. I wrote up my lake trip and can share if interested.

Actually, I found the group, Northern Illinois BMW, back in Nov and got myself invited to their next meeting on the the 8th. There are listed as a yahoo group but membership is not automatic. They actually denied my yahoo request to join the group but the president of the group went out of his way to invite me to the group's xmas and new year's get-togethers. They want new members but they want to meet first and see if all get along.
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/NIBMWR/
They seem like good folk. I was planning on checking them out first and letting others know what its all about. My impression so far is that they do not ride as much socialize. All things being equal, I like the group that we put togther so far - like OU182 said - lets make it our own.

As a member of Chicago Region BMW Group (http://www.crbmw.com/), I've enjoyed some nice trips. Met lots of good people. Jerry, who's the president of the group manages to get better rates for the members for hotel accommodations at the National Rallies. I've so far liked being part of this group. It's a fair size group, as a matter of fact, CRBMW got the award at the West Bend for the most attending members.

Several years ago I took a cross country trip running into the deep South, up the East coast and back to Chicago. The scariest part of the trip was the part around the Southern tip of Lake Michigan where I-80, the Skyway, I-65, the Ryan and the Bishop Ford all seem to merge within a few miles.:bolt
Not my favorite stretch of road in either a cage or on a bike. The ferry would be fun IMHO.

No worries, a one piece Aerostitch with armor, a full face helmet and ABS saved him from more than bruises and stiffness. Bob's BMW has the remains now - and he is in the market for another K1200LT for the Wyoming trip.

More snow due tonight and tomorrow. But . . . . only 5 - 6 weeks more of this and we're back at it! Find my happy place, find my happy place!!!!
Now I have the F800ST and the RT and the 'ol Piaggio ET4 and they sit in the garage and whenever I'm out there I think they're laughing at me. So i get a real ugly look on my face and threaten not to rotate the battery chargers. They shut right up.

Rub it in why don't you. Seriously, with more snow on the way I've got a serious case of cabin fever... I'm getting a little cranky.

looked like a good ride for electrically heated.... everything!
6-10" incoming tonight. Sigh. I feel like reassembling the bike and starting to ride South - fast.:bolt
Oh and Uncut, Martin seems to have a K75 to sell? That's a very fine road bike!
Of course that means he'll be temporarily without a BMW:deal , I may have to lend him some BMW roundels for his rice grinder. :p

You're welcome to come along. Since, we may not meet as a group until our first ride in May, you you're welcome to hop along for any of our side trips that we post. I know Martin has some rides for April... stay tuned

You'd smoke me on anything that resembled a 'Adventure Rider' type of road - dirt, gravel, you name it ..... I'd struggle.
On the other hand - both of us will have a hard time keeping up with Martin - so never mind. Keep the 650 and we'll hang back together and hope we eventually catch him. On paved roads only please.
Musta killed him to be following me last January as I futzed along at somewhere near the legal limit.:blah

You always got something in the works, huh?
I can understand the need for room, 3 bikes in the garage year 'round, 4 in summer so it's a little tight with the car, too.
Let us know when you take delivery on the VStrom and let's see some more pictures then, ok?

This long winter is driving me crazy... :bottle
I almost bought a runabout boat this weekend. Thank God Martin stopped by and got me out on the bike or I would be out @ 20K right now... + 5K more a year.
Plus my wife offered that if I bought a boat then no new bike in 2009 - by 2009 I take to mean Fall 2008. So - no boat = new bike. :german

Shipping your bike....I think it's a smart move especially when you're going to pay for most of your trip by driving out there with the company. More options for adventures on the ride back home.
