Considering a new tagline -

Friends don't let Friends ride Boxers

If I am back to my normal schedule I CAN MAKE IT.

Wait a minute. You had that gorgeous RT. You fall down and go boom in the snow (yes, it was the snows' fault) so you buy a F650. Now you've sold that and bought a K? Please tell me a KGT or S, not an LT!!!!!

WEZUL, not everyone can have 3 or 4 bikes in their garage like some riders here.:violin
LT is the best for slab riding but all K motors are superior to boxers.:blah :blah :blah

Well, I'm a little partial to RT's. Was a bummer when Curt dumped in the slop, I think it spoiled the bike for him. And truly all is just in fun.

I'd poke Steve right in the shoulder, us old men can't play fair!

I got an RS - it has to be the perfect bike - with bar risers. The RT was nice but I never felt comfortable on it - may'be too big too soon - I was off bikes for 10+ years prior. Now - bigger the better!

Just back from Gillette. Wyo.and the BMW Rally. 3444 miles in 9 days - drove in Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois. Highest atitude ridden was 10,974 feet, amidst snow fields and blooming wildflowers - highest speed was 117MPH - open range encounters with herds of cattle and flocks of sheep... fortunately not at 117 MPH.

Broke a clutch cable and rode across 60 miles of high desert highways in 4th and 5th gears before finally killing the bike in Little America, Wyo. (Only in Wyoming can you go that far without stopping)

Fortunately Bob's BMW came through with a new cable the next day.

I-80 sucks at night with a 45 MPH Southerly cross wind, trust me on this.

I talked WEZUL into it.:whistle

I do love that State Line area, Richmond and points NW. We had a perfect and I mean perfect night for a ride. I met three new friends; Cory, Pete and Butch.

I had never had Cod prepared in this fashion and yes, you may ask yourself . . . "Cod"?! "In Wisconsin"?!!!!!! (I am reminded of Baccala`). Yes and it was very good. Served with a decadent butter sauce. All you can eat, with cole slaw, potatoes, onions. For an extra dollar they also had bbq'd chicken which was also very tasty. They had a dessert table with home made apple pie. I was so stuffed after two plates I will have to sample the pie and other sweets on my next visit.

On our way home we stopped at Famous Freddy's in Fox Lake. They offer a huge outdoor deck next to the marina, I sat and gazed as I sipped an ice water. Then it was time for Cory, Steve and I to head for the barn. We rode as a group until Lake-Cook Road, I waved and it was a quick 25 minute trip down the 355 and home.

Thanks guys, I enjoyed.

Oh! And I discovered Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy. A Weiss beer with a hint of lemon. For me it fit the evening perfectly.
Drink Responsibly!

This weekend.

Anyone who really wants to know more about the roots of DeKalb County should visit the Sycamore Steam Show and Threshing Bee, held at the Taylor Marshall Farm, about 4 miles northeast of Sycamore on Plank Road.

While the first show was held at John Allen's Corners in Hampshire, the club that hosts the event, the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club, formed in 1957 at Halverson's Implement Co. in DeKalb. It's first board of directors meeting was held at the Daily Chronicle's original home near the corner of First and Lincoln Highway.

Fifty-two years later the show has continued to grow without forgetting its roots. One of its newest attractions is is a Steam Traction Engine built by the Illinois Thresher Company right in Sycamore.

e.g. ring tour of Iceland for two weeks.

Planned, but that is something I'd want to do solo. The experience of going solo vs in a group is totally different, and for me, far more satisfying.

BTW, the ring road (paved) tour would be boring as all the interesting roads and sights are inland as well, but gravel. When I go, it'll be for four weeks. Its an out of the way place to go to not see it all.

What we are missing is the local and practical expertise that an experienced tour operator can provide but with all things being equal, I would prefer to learn with friends rather than from a tour company.

All you need is some very good maps and a good imagination. Then do some digging on the internet. Having it all laid out by an over-priced tour company takes all the fun and adventure out of the tour.

As another riding season draws to a close - probably with Martin in the lead for miles ridden since January - I only have 7000 under my belt this season... This was in ON. Sounds like fun and it's a beautiful ride thru the Kettle Moraine region to get there!

Anyone from the Chicago Riders interested in going? (If you don't you'll be looking back in January regretting that you didn't say yes.....):nono

Hey Brian,
Heck yeah I'm going. Got the room reservation and sent in my form w/check a few weeks ago. Last year was a blast. Let me know how your schedule looks. There is a remote chance my boss might drop a "let's go to Boston" business trip on me last minute but it's like I said, remote.

Had a get off on Friday afternoon - the woman driving the Toyota ahead of me had burned out brake lights. Didn't hit her, but did a low side lay down with about 15 feet of separation. Hard to say what happened, it was over in a nano second - but I think I locked up the front wheel... and went down.

Fortunately I had a helmet, protective pants and armored mesh jacket - a sprained wrist, some very minor road rash and a few aches is all I recieved.

I need to replace the Clutch side mirror assembly - the damaged fairing pieces can wait until the snows of winter leave me with lots of time to futz with replacing, repairing and repainting.

The bummer, is that if I'd been riding a linked ABS version, I would have been fine.

Food for winter thought.

Still aiming for the campout.

Door County is a very worthy one day or two weekend ride for the group. From my place you can reach the very tip by the Ferry in about 5 hours. Very scenic ride once you are past Milwaukee.

Anyone interested on September 27th or 28th? Or a two day ride staying over night... there is a great ferry ride to Washington Island, where it's still 1970, but with good coffee.

Taken 43 up to Manitowoc, then 42 along the Coast all the way up to the tip of the 'thumb' to Washington Island's ferry.

Return via 57 until it hits Sturgeon Bay.

Of course local riders may have better routes to share?

Hey ya'all that really was a good ride. OK, my apologizes to Martin for no twisties up in the peninsula but did that merit the sudden urge for the hooks when he took point?! (Where are we goin'?!) Scared the H E double toothpicks outta me!
Speaking of taking the point, was that pace alright for you guys heading home? Marcin, you and Martin would launch and run out about a half mile ahead of us and then you'd be doing 65 and then you'd run out again and after a while I was all like, OK, let's roll. So I banged on the cruise, set it at 80 sumpfin' and we we made some tracks in the dark. As long as it was 2 lane divided highway straight straight straight I figured . . . what the heck.

Steve was pretty excited and rightly so.
We took a quick hop so he could check out his quick ride and then back to his place to hide it before his wife got home. :doh
Then I dashed home before work missed me. I was successful in pulling off my 3 hour "long lunch" without detection.
Have I mentioned lately that I love my job?

The good news is that you're in a wonderful new Hotel, the bad news is that it's a short cab ride from anyplace I'd actually recommend.

Now that we've established the cab ride - what kind of food do you like?

My esteemed associates are correct - the Rush Street area is hopping, even on a Sunday night and if steak is what you want, Gibsons (in the Rush Street area) rocks as does Sullivans.

Texas is hard to beat for Steak and Tex-Mex, however, you might want to try something different?

Rosebud (Rush Street) is good Italian - but it's big restaurant Italian as opposed to the real thing.

Talk to us - what are you looking for?:drink

I'm a foodie in addition to the BMW addiction. Good cheap food is appreciated as well as good expensive food. I would think that Chicago would have some killer ethnic restaurants...no chains. When I need a steak I just reach out my window and slice a piece off the nearest steer, so unless it's world renowned steak I would pass. Really great Italian/Polish/German/Russian/Bosco/etc. is a shoe in. My traveling companion is just a lad but relatively adventurous. Also, I need to know a great Dog stand. I've been to the famous deep dish pizza place, a famous but poorly executed rib place on the south side, a great diner downtown that does a mean Reuben and a great dog stand close to a college. Don't remember any of the names but don't want to go back to any of them (except the dog stand)so I guess that doesn't matter.

This place is totally Italian... but a modern Italian menu, not the heavy stuff. Zagat rated and always brilliant.

I take clients here when they want a real Chicago dining experience. 50/50 chance some of our "Outfit" guys will be dining there at the same time, so you know it's good.

(You don't want to give Joey ' The Clown' Lombardo or the Grand Avenue Crew a bad dish. Joey is actually in prison now, but the Crew is alive and well)

Their Pasta Fagiole is best best in Chicago... and perhaps North America.

And a short cab ride from Rush Street where your understudy can gaze on our version of nightlife.

Usual disclaimers.

I finally parted with Chicago last weekend, and movers are bringing my bike on the truck along with the stuff. I should be getting a call tomorrow to pick up my bike.

I wasn't sure exactly where to post this request for help but I though this was a Chicago based thread so I'd try here.

I'm looking at a bike at South Suburban Suzuki BMW in Chicago Heights. Has anyone ever had any dealings with this dealer? Are they honest enough to buy a bike through the Internet without actually having seen the bike in person? Also, does anyone have any experience in actually purchasing one this way. I'm a bit apprehensive about sending a check to someone that I don't know anything about. How can I protect myself?

Thanks

I'm going to Chicago the first weekend in December. Are there any motorcycle related activites or sites I need to see while I'm in town? Also, do I need to look up any dealers or shops for a hat or tshirt? Well....I just got rear ended by some b#tch in her mini van and she drove away. knocked me down and broke a bag and what ever else. Of course her plate was not registered. Sitting at the rt 68 east red light exit ramp northbound rt 53 for about 10 seconds and bam, I am on the pavement. lucky for me I was pointed to turn or she would have put me into traffic. Well I was lucky in the respect of injury. Had my armored jacket and chaps and fell to my left(good shoulder). Knee and hip are sore but the cheap insurance paid for this. I will still ride Sunday minus left side case(as it will not stay on). Really amazed me as she got out of her van to ask if I was OK and then drove off.:jawdrop
