Who is on board for our May 2-4 Bike tour to Quincy, Ill and the highways of Missouri? We're planning on leaving the Chicago area on Friday AM May 2 - meeting pt TBD - and follow a carefully planned scenic route down to Quincy, Ill. returning on Sunday May 4.

Riders will have the opportunity to either camp or stay at a local motel in Quincy, Ill. Saturday will see us having breakfast in Historic Hannibal, Missouri (Home of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn) and riding on genuine scenic Missouri two lanes.... returning to Quincy and dinner that evening.

Anyone in the region is welcome to meet up with us at any point on the ride, which means that if any of you downstaters want to join the fun you're welcome!:bar

I'm camping and am packed and ready to go!

We can meet for breakfast at

Three Brothers
1220 S Eastwood Dr
Woodstock, IL 60098
815-338-5606

(corner of Lake St. and Rt. 47, just north of US-14 and south of Rt. 120)

There's a gas station around the corner also. We fill our stomachs and gas tanks here.

The breakfast is okay. Second thought, I might scout for better tasting breakfast somewhere, I'll let you know, somewhere on our route and easy for others. We meet here annually for our Kettle Moraine ride.

Anyone wishing for the garmin maps (.gdb) file can email me. I'll email a week before we go, this way, if I add any waypoints, you'll get the updated version.

If we meet for breakfast in Woodstock, say 7am for 1 hour tops, we'll be in Dixon around 9:45am, that maybe too early for lunch.

We stop for some great pie in Tampico at around 10:30am. I hope they still make great pies like they did 10 years ago :dunno

I found Portside Bar & Grill in New Boston (town that at the banks of Mississippi river), probably 1.5 mile detour where we can stop for lunch at around 12:45pm

BTW, about camping, I found the Siloam Spring State Park is about 20 miles East of Quincy! I maybe hoteling in that case.

Say are we going to have another meeting to finalize the itinerary and argue about having breakfast in Woodstock? I mean, I have to ride north to ride south?
Ain't no big deal.
Hey Montauk, is the route for the GPS ready? (.gdb file)
Anybody else have the file yet? How does it look?

The way I see, given the spread where people live, most of us may be able to meet at a predetermined place, say Woodstock. However, we'll have another one for 15 min break where everyone can catch up. I think that would be near Rt 2 in Rockford.

This way someone like yourself, or Uncut, perhaps Jack from WI can meet us, etc. I do understand that Woodstock is not for everyone, but probably for Brian, Martin, I and Steve.

Also, I think that if weather forecast for rain, that we be open. Although we discussed and decided to stay with the program, but I'm thinking, we are going to ride to enjoy & have fun. We need to enjoy the MO & IL scenery. Rain takes 1/2 the fun out, gloomy day, etc. Just a food for thought.:bolt

I was ready, honest. Even updated the GPS so to be sure not to get lost. Put it back on the bike the night before after testing; everything's fine.
Got up Saturday morning, nice and early, don't want to be late. Warm up the bike, fire up the GPS. Yes, I accept! Where to? Address. Select city.
REBOOT.
What the f . . . . . :scratch
Ok, stupid me I did something wrong.
Where to. Address. Select city.
REBOOT.
Uh, yeah. This is not good.
Where to. Address. Select city.
REBOOT.
Where to. Address. Select city.
REBOOT. :dunno
It's a little after 8. Ok, I know where Woodfield is, not real sure where this bakery is but I can find it, right? No problem! :blah
So I meander up 53. Old 53 not that awful slab 355, no. Get up to the destined area with about 40 minutes to spare. Ok, good, let's find a place to top off the tank, they'll be happy I did this so we can just blast. Fine. Run around for 20 minutes, find a gas station and top off. It's a little after 9 now better find this bakery. It's on Woodfield Drive how hard could it be, right? :bolt
Well guys, I orbited Woodfield and it's peripheries for almost 45 minutes looking for this darn bakery and never found it.
So I ended up on 355 north venting my frustrations and before you know it I'm at Lake-Cook road. Ok, head west. Then it was what, 62? Then 14 northwest. Then 173 west I think and here we are at Rock Cut State park.
Then I called Rae and told here of my misadventures. While on the phone I'm looking casually at my plates and I realize that the tags on my plate are expired! New ones at home sitting on the kitchen counter!
So I rode home hoping I wouldn't get a ticket.
Got home and figured I'd blown one of the GPS updates so do them again. Restart and test.
Same thing.
Lovely.
Soooooo, I poke around in the firmware on the GPS, find some button that will "reset factory defaults". Pressed that, GPS goes through a reboot and prompts for setup and sure enough, we're up and running.
What a delightful lesson.
At least the ride to Rock Cut and back was decent. Great to be back on the bike again. :thumb
Sorry I made you guys wait.

Having said that, I think we should ride in what we are comfortable with. Some like to scrape the pegs while others shy away:bolt

Everyone should have a copy of the .pdf file that I sent earlier, if you don't have it, send me an email and I'll forward one. Curt and Bruce are the only one who've got the .gdb garmin file.

If someone wishes to in a much smaller group of their own, they can ride on their own as everyone knows the route, and we can meet at the breakfast to start the ride, and meet at the end at Quincy. Or we all ride together like a one big happy family.

I, ride within my own capabilities, and do not attempt to ride very fast on curves. If it rains, bring that a notch down.

State park is 20 miles west of Quincy. Hotelling makes more sense. I called up to Comfort Inn, and the prevailing rates are $75/night ($$). Motel 6 ($) is available, but I didn't call. There are ($$$) hotels also.

So far, I have not made any reservations as we really don't have a real count. And after googling, I found there are plenty of hotel options, we could just do a walk-in's.

Lets regroup - what kind of group would we be if we let one missed ride let it all fall apart. Granted, physically we are falling apart :whistle Lets consider the 5/02 ride off and reschedule

A new approach:

Lets lay out a series of events and/or times to ride.
We then get together on the forum the day before every week every scheduled ride and do a roll call.
People committ then we ride. If not - there is next week.

Sound like a plan?

Any volunteers to put together a calender online? I know that I want to do the ride that Bik put together and the RA rally in June (I think). Personally, I have two off-road events (one in June and one in July) that I have paid for and committed. I know Martin is planning on Deal's Gap. Lets get those events up there and see who can come when and for what...

Sorry to hear that Bik - how long would you be out?

Well, I saw one doc last week, I'm supposed to see him this Thursday, but since I couldn't make the MRI appointment, that would be rescheduled. I am looking for the second opinion, probably at one of the university hospitals.

I think I'm nearing to wear just tension band around the knee on a regular basis till it gets fixed. After I saw the doc last week, he had to pull the knew few times to measure how loose, I think that kinda aggravated it a bit too.

Hoping that I could put some sort of high tension or a brace until then and ride the bike.:bikes

I am actively going to check out the rides, but will decide last minute whether to go or not, hence, I cannot as yet commit on a future date.:bikes

This past winter I spent tons of hours planning all sorts of rides, and high hopes etc., but now I'm the middle of a company relocation process to the silicon valley area. This means, that my ride time commitments will be very less, and often I don't get time to check message boards.

June 21/22 is out as my spouse is flying to the west, and I won't be able to make it.

We started out early on Saturday morning, meeting up with Curt in Schaumburg at a coffee shop. At least I think it was, we were there before they opened.

Heading West, we finally found a Bagel/Coffee shop open and we were able to start to bring Curt back to life.

It was a beautiful Chicago day, clear, cool and dry with light breezes out of the West. As we cleared the suburbs to the West - staying off the slab - we passed through many small Illinois towns. Those farmers fortunate enough to have fields on higher ground look like they might have a good year - 'knee high by the Forth of July' - some of this corn was a lot higher than that.

We reached Rockford and headed South along the Rock River. Roads along Rivers are often enchanting, and this morning ride was no exception. Recent high water and flooding was evident, but along this small river damage was minimal. We flew from shade to sun and back, sweeping thru tiny towns - stopping for a break across from the statue of Chief Blackhawk.

We stopped at the bridge over the Mississippi heading to Clinton, before doubling back to hit the River road South to the Quad Cities.

Martin showed how fast his Yamaha was by terrifying Curt and me with a rather high speed passing technique. Not for the faint of heart.

Eventually the Rock hits the Mississippi - here we stopped near the John Deere Museum for a quick lunch. No pictures here - Martin said he'd seen too many tractors growing up in Poland. (But I'll bet they weren't as pretty as a Deere!)

More to come later...

We departed The Quad Cities after a lunch of fried everything and headed South paralleling the big river. Our intention was to follow the River Road, but high waters had caused sections of the road to be closed - so random detours were part of our day.

The West wind picked up abruptly as we augered South along some really beautiful and mostly empty two lane roads winding thru fields and forests. We think the highest gusts probably hit 45MPH... that'll push you off your line!

Finally we were back on the mighty Miss around Nauvoo, Illinois.

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/Beemer10/P6280286_01.jpg

We stopped by the elaborately reconstructed Mormon settlement, mostly just to see the tremendous view of the River - probably a mile wide here with a sweeping 180 degree view of several miles. Mormons from all over the world seem to make pilgrimages here - lots of minivans full of well scrubbed and well behaved kids. Anyhow a nice site and one worth seeing.

We gassed up and started the final leg to Quincy. Bryan's Garmin walked us right into town and our hotel. Quincy - a town that probably saw its best days 100 years ago - has some fantastic homes... a whole district full as a matter of fact. The National Geographic refers to it as one of the ten most significant architecturial corners in the USA.

Not that any of us cared - 400 miles of riding and we were beat. Dinner was at a local Italian place.... not up to Chicago standards, but not bad.

Sunday morn we woke up bright and early. At least I did. The papers called for fair weather, low humidity and light breezes out of the West - perfect for our trip across Illinois on Route 24 to Peoria - thence to Starved Rock and back to Chicago.

We headed out after a light breakfast and over the Mississippi to one of Missouri's infamous fireworks tents. There are two bridges over this vast river... and the lower (older) bridge was closed. The lowest span was nearly under water with debris piled up against it. A week earlier this span was completely under water.

The damage from this season's strange flood was extensive North and South of Quincy.

One member purchased - ahemmm - some contraband and filled his pannier with the booty. I looked up at the darkening sky - the fair weather was starting to look a bit moist.

We started out exiting the "Show me" State going over the river and through the woods on Illinois 24.

Stop.

Illinois 24 between Quincy and Peoria is a great road - even as the dark skies opened up. No bad weather, just bad gear... we were prepared and rode on. The showers turned out to be scattered and disappeared completely in an hour or so.

We picked up the tempo - our moving average on this stretch was 57MPH according to my Garmin. The road snakes around and up and down - one perfectly lovely valley permitted me to roll on the throttle on a long downhill run with a dry and absolutely empty road in fine repair. Straight and true at a speed I won't mention here.

Suffice it to say that my K-100 still has the heart of a champion.

We had lunch on the Peoria waterfront - more fried everything -

:eat
then headed up 6 to Starved Rock State Park. Starved Rock is a small, but interesting park... that has a 10 mph speed limit. That's enforced. Well a pretty detour anyhow.

From there we slabbed it home - a great summer ride for our little rider's club.

Next trip? Who knows?
