I've decided I finally want a top case on my bike...I like carrying the kitchen sink on trips :)

I bought the luggage rack for the cowl and will be installing that shortly and I have a Pelican 1550 that is unused. I am thinking of buying the original BMW top case mounting pieces and drilling into the case to make this happen.

Anyone else already done this or have an alternate tried and true suggestion?

Pics would be wonderfully appreciated if available.

Howdy,
I was looking at the prices of Givi and the mounting plates... decided to make my own. Toolbox with the bottom of the box cut in 2 places. About the same size as the rack. Then the cuts went on the back of the tool box and met in the middle. Then i pushed the cut out UP and used sheet metal screws to hold it on the back. This way the box is saddled on the rack. Also its bolted on with stove bolts.

Used marine grade fiberglass bondo and painted the thing. In the dark it lookes great! I have pictures.

how did you compensate for the cowl not being flat...hence luggage rack is at an angle?

I am a do-it-yourselfer. I had rather build it than buy it. Please post the pictures.

I got tired of storing my pack of gum and chapstick in the 22L stock top case on my k100rt, (not much else fits in this case!). Had the same thought you guys did..

I took a shot at fabricating a mounting bracket out of aluminum, basically one piece folded over into a right triangle shape, but wasn't happy with the way it sat on the my stock rack. I found a "top of the line" bracket @ www.cbtimports.com...fit perfectly, shaped/mounted a flat piece of polished/diamond aluminum stock onto that bracket and I've got an "adventure rack" on my K.

I haven't found the topcase I like yet..been looking @ pelican and other light/waterproof cases. I think I'll be able to mount any topcase with a flat bottom pretty easily. I can take pics if anyone is interested, but nothing real fancy w/my setup.

if you plan packing the kitchen sink, you might want to incorporate the pannier brackets into your mounting system to allow for the weight, otherwise you'll crack your rear cowl. I think the manual says 15lbs? as load limit on the rear rack.
