That's a K1 fender on the front and a big-ass PIAA light. (Turns night into day!)

Here is what it looks like with the custom aux tank on the back and the Parabellum windscreen:

This picture is from the day the driveshaft broke and I had to trailer it home. (You can read that story at:

I don't like the windscreen and only run it when I'm going to be driving in the cold for a long time.

Nice pic. I took my roadster on NHIS last year. I'm sure the squidly crowd would be surprised how well the naked Beemer does on the track. With some aftermarket shocks it would be stellar!

I think a naked Beemer based on the R1100S would be boss! Add a cafe fairing and you have the next generation R90/100S. You could call it the "First Edition"!

Mountainman, psst, it is not a secret!

But, remember the MOA magazine has a significant lead time. That is one major method of sharing this great news with our membership.

So far, cross posting to other great online forums has gained our current forum membership. As well as placement on the MOA web site. Word of mouth has helped as well.

We also communicated with the on-line group of club presidents.

We choose not to spam the e-mail of our membership to "get the word out"

So, tell your friends! And look for some coverage in the Magazine...:D

This was my previous bike, a GS 450. It was a salvage title 200.00 bike with 4k from 1983. I spent a quite a few hours, and including tires, spent a total of 800 on it. Did the paint and other repairs myself, and got 2 good years out of it.

Can I post a few, to show how I got to having a BMW?

Will promise to only post those that are composed and focused....

This is the Kawasaki KZ-650C, that I bought in my senior year of high school. Rode it to Colorado, where my older brother and I took this and a Honda CB-750k across Tincup Pass and then down Schofield Pass. Tincup was scarey, Schofield Pass terrifying. Schofield is terrifying in a Jeep, too...

Anyway, went to Motorycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix while I owned this bike. Racked up about 47k miles on it in 4 years, sold it to a friend, he got it to 65k and then it was stolen, never to be seen again....

Photo is in Papago Park, Scottsdale, AZ. About 3 miles from my apartment in Tempe, back then.....

DougGrosjean
11-20-2003, 06:00 PM
Then came a Kawaski GPz-550, which was lighter than the KZ-650, handled better, had more power, and got better fuel mileage to boot.

The GPz, I rode all over and in all kinds of good and bad conditions. Fast and slow, hot and cold. From AZ to OH via CO in October, snow, Niagra Falls 2-up with Eclipse saddlebags. Ah.... cool memories.

And one very bad one - a friend crashed following me through a downhill sweeper in Arizona. I don't know how fast he was going, but I was truly wide-open throttle. The crash site looked like an airplane had disintegrated. Shudder....

Eventually it carried me back to Ohio in 1984, and college, and was refurbished around 1989 with a Fox shock, red paint frame and wheels, fork brace, transmission dogs undercut, header... lots of little things. Had it *just right*, and it was stolen. Recovered, but cosmetically destroyed. I still have it, and still consider re-furbing it again for rides to Mid-Ohio Vintage Days....

DougGrosjean
11-20-2003, 06:01 PM
Then came a BMW R100s, smoke red.

This is on my honeymoon, somewhere out west, at a KOA in SD I think.....

DougGrosjean
11-20-2003, 06:07 PM
The R100s eventually got an RS fairing, frame and swingarm braces, lightened and balanced flywheel, and the rods and pistons were balanced as well. A host of small things, much like the Gpz before it....

This one carried me around Lake Superior in October 1996, where I camped in some of the coldest conditions I'd ever camped in (thick frost on the tent before I even climbed in...), where I saw the Northern Lights for the first time in my life.

Eventually I sold it to a guy named Rick Pelton, up near Traverse City MI. He'd been looking for one like mine, but so many he looked at didn't run, or leaked. I'd never been to Traverse City, not that I could remember, and it was only 350 miles away, so I rode up there to show it off. He rode it, and bought it.

A week later, I rode it up again for final delivery. This photo was on that last ride.

DougGrosjean
11-20-2003, 06:13 PM
I sold my R100 to buy a perfect, low-mileage, still uner warranty R11rs in 1997.

This photo was taken on the Dempster Highway, about 130 miles off pavement, when I pulled over to fix a flat.

A day later, my partner's R11gs would be totalled in the Northwest Territories, about another 160 miles further north.

For all the details, the Alaska trip is over on the IBMWR site.

Take a look at:
http://www.ibmwr.org/pastevnt/grosjeanalaska/alaska.html

DougGrosjean
11-20-2003, 06:25 PM
The BMW R11rs was destroyed in a collision with a van. The ABS worked great, it was 45F and dark on November 20, 1999... I didn't suffer any broken bones bouncing off the van, but the bike was totalled.

We'd lost our local BMW dealer by then (Schiets in Fremont), the settelment had drug out nearly 3 months before being settled (since there were no skid marks, they felt I didn't try to stop), and eventually the van driver was found to be completely at fault.

But by then I had only about 2 weeks to get ready for Bike Week..!

The local Honda-Yamaha-Kawasaki-Suzuki dealer had a new Concours in stock, the saddlebags were big enough to carry my laptop, so I bought it.

Here it is, on an 1100 mile trip with my then 6 y/o son, Jean-Luc.

BTW, this trip was on the Web, but currently isn't. However, I have included it in a book that is being reviewed at a publisher now..... if the publisher doesn't publish, I'll do it myself. The book is good (IMO), and is a collection of stories about my father, myself, and my son. Starts with my son's first ride on my motorcycle at age 5, and finishes 30 stories later with him learning to ride a dirtbike at the Honda rider training site in Troy, Ohio.

It ends up being somewhat like "Zen and the Art...", but without all the philosophical meanderings. More about being a child, getting up on two wheels, and living. And dying... the stories are pretty diverse.

Anyway, am crossing my fingers... several co-workers that ride (and some that don't) tell me they want an autographed copy, so we'll see what happens.

GregInBoulder

Original everything. Bought new in '95, ridden less than 800 miles, sold to pay for a H2? Who cares, it's mine now.

DougGrosjean
11-20-2003, 10:10 PM
Cliffy,

The Conc is OK. It's not love, at least not for me, but many people are absolutely in love with them.

Mine is a Y2k model, and is closing in on 84,000 miles now. It's reliable, but I've had many parts wear out.

On balance, it was almost completely trouble-free up to 50k miles. After that, some larger parts began to wear out.

The flaws are well-known on the COG website, and can be anticipated. Wheel bearings don't go a long time, about 30k on the front and 50k on the back. Petcocks fail, and sometimes the cams pit. When they do, sometimes they're replaced but many times not. The pits get to a certain point, and just stop. At least they did in my case.

Nothing on the bike is state-of-the-art. But for most people, that's fine.

Hard to get used to the step backward after you've had a twin with Tele-Lever and a BIG alternator, though.

Some seventy pages back in this thread, I "showed" mine. The K1200GT. After 2000 miles of trying to break me in, she went to a new home.

Here's a symptom of my reversion back to the world of RS twins.
'04 R1150RS. Starting all over agakin after outfitting the '94 RSL with all the crap we need to buy. And then getting the "Dark Side Itch". It was an itch well scratched and I loved the power train, etc.

On with the show. Anybody have some lowers for sale? Ohlins? (Sorry K-Man. The guy who bought the R1100 loves 'em).

The Rockster has self cancelling turn signals because it has the S bike instruments. It has an S bike front end and, from what I can tell, has S bike shocks and ride height.

Except for the R12, which still needs work (it's up on the lift and the forks are spread across my workbench), they're all riders. I hope to make the R12 a rider, too. The /2 and /3 have both been on multiday trips, rallies and campouts.

No Darryl - I believe you qualify as a dealership (or as a Bike Show) either of which exempts you from the rules n regs.
good lord, what an impressive fleet. thanks for the pics

If ya don't ride 'em, what good are they?

If you catch me at a rally, ask me about the time I passed a 916 on the /2, and kept him passed for about 20 miles.

good lord, what an impressive fleet. thanks for the pics No dealership... none are for sale. And not a show, they all have too much road grime for that.

But come over in April and see a lot of airhead and vintage bikes at the Tech Day I'm hosting (http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/motorcycles/2004surfcitytechday.htm).

You have a great website (home page).
Everybody should go snoop around. I enjoyed the marvelous architecture from your Europen trip. (Thank God there was the beauty of a Dunkin Donuts to break up all the humdrum!)
You had some great shots of sidecars - really liked the custom one with wood trim in the trip to bike week series.

Thanks. I've been working to put some words against all the photos I've taken in the last few years. It would be nice to have some kind of clue as to what you're looking at in all those shots.

The Dunkin' Donuts was in Barcelona, Spain, and it made me think of Kbasa, who has indicated that he misses them from Bahston.

It's funny because I'm not really much interested in them. My friend Steve, up in Seattle, however, has always had one and really enjoys them. So sometimes when I see something interesting, I grab a shot for him. Like the leanable hacked GS that has to be put on its sidestand to be parked that I saw in Schwetzingen, Germany. (Click the pic to go to my vacation snapshots.)

I have always admired sidecars. The guy I bought my first bike from (it was a 75 or 76 Honda 750) had a sidecar rig on his new bike and I thought it was way cool.
I saw the leaning sidecar pic - looks highly flexible.
I don't think I could get Julie Claire to sit still in a sidecar, so I will hafta let her just hang on to me for the time being.

At the Falling Leaf Rally there was a small dog that rode along behind it's owner. Don't remember the Bike but I think the dog only had three legs. It was getting around pretty good during the weekend.

in our neck of the woods who has a platform mounted between his bars behind the fairing and he has two poodles who ride on the platform/box. It is a grin - they have little helmets.
Can't remember the bike too well cuz the dogs blew my mind.

The first 1150R I saw in the flesh was that nice blue. It was a hoot to ride in the hills outside of Reno, NV. Beautiful bike.

As a resident of Vancouver Island, you are under orders. You will regularly supply us with photos of a motorcycle in stunning B.C.. Failure to comply can lead to the confiscation of your oilhead.

Seeing as my job allows me to travel all over the Island, I am scouting future rides....will keep you all 'posted' :bliss

Central California. Hwy 99 between Modesto and Merced.

I only remember because of a ride one fall evening. Coming
back to the Bay Area from Turlock, I froze my off. This was
back in the day when I was younger and dumber.

No pics yet, but(t) I just set up a buy on a friend's '83 R100RS.

It needs the motor put back together (top end) and has the stock Smoke Red paint that is slightly tired.

I'll go through it and possibly paint it in an R90S smoke silver/black scheme. Not sure yet.

If I do, and it turns out, maybe I'll follow through with the paint scheme on the '04 R1150RS.

Life is good. Right now, anyway.

I had an '83 RS and they came in that Alaska blue and a kind of neat Gray color. I think the Smoke Red was on the S version.

Mine was Alaska Blue and I still miss it. Damn.

The S bike might be leaving real soon now too.
