I am leaning towards an '05 or '06 K 1200 S to give a try to the dark side:whistle ...the yellow/black/white alum one. I have found three with low miles and close in price range...two a few days away drive, one here in Austin. Love the boxers and will keep them, just want to see how these feel beneath my feet.

Any tips or things to look for on these models? :dunno

Yes!

Sit down, look up and hold on!
Warp Speed. Hard to find a road that will do sixth gear justice.

I know that's right, swapped rides one day with a clubmember going to Falling Leaf last month. He wanted to check out the GS, I wanted to ride his new K12GT. Should have stayed off of it! I have an RT, so the GT was not a big enough change, except for the HP diff anyways!...this is

I went from a boxer to a K12S. You will want to scan the K12 web sites and do a comparison between the 05 and 06 models. Some argue that the 05 models were beta tested in the market place and the later models are more reliable and less buggy.

My 05 was a good buy, but mostly because I have a great dealer (BMW of SE Michigan) who was knowledgable about and very responsive to the issues with the 05's (replaced instrument cluster, replaced breather box, replaced [twice] the final drive).

The power and handling are awsome. You'll use 5th and 6th gears only if you worry about gas mileage. Unless I'm on the slab, I rarely even use 4th gear.

enjoy!

We have experience with two '05 and one '06 K12Ses and have no issues with any. The one '05 seems to be just a little more responsive than the '06. My wife rides the other '05, loves it, but I can't report on how it compares since I haven't ridden it much. All have the same computer updates. They have about 8K, 11K, and 11K on them. One '05 needed a fuel sender which quit last summer in Colorado. We got about 7K or 8K on the first rear M1, and about 11K on the front (one is still running the front). Replaced with M3 tires. All three final drives were just changed for the first time and nothing remarkable there. Just a little metal dust in the drain plug magnets. I like the instrument panel on the '06 with the BC a little better than the ones on the '05s. None use any oil, nor is there anything on the engine oil drain plugs. I really like this bike. I think your experience with either year will depend more on the individual bike rather than on the year.
I know an '06 K12S which just had it's valves checked at 18K and they were not in need of any adjustment and it has run a lot of time in the high rpms. Out of the dozen or more K12Ses and K12Rs I have seen our local dealer service or sell, I don't know of any serious issues with any of them. No final drives, trans, etc.
I think this is going to be like the '85 and '86 K100RSes where the '86 was somewhat refined, however an almost cult developed for the '85. There are still claims that the '85s were more gutsy.

Thanks...am going to ride one while with group in Big Bend this weekend. A little more agressive riding position than anything else I have, but it seems comfortable just sitting on it at the dealer. I was amazed how low it is in regards to seat height.
And Yes on the radar detector...the GT I rode a few weeks back was at warp speed in 3rd gear without any prodding....looked down at speedo and rolled the throttle back to MO state limits...close anyway!
