I did a search several ways trying to get some idea of what wt. oil to use in this '93 K1100RS, but not much help. The Clymer book table shows a bunch of brand names, but I don't see any weights listed. Can someone give me an idea of the weight, or range that is "normal"? :dunno I suspect the 10 wt on my shelf might be too thick. KC

I am running BelRay 5 weight in my 87 K100LT. I have no problem, but I like a soft ride. I looked in the owner's manual and I can't find a recommended weight, only some brand names. I must have gotten it from Clymers. They have more info for the pre 1990 models.

Some have recommended 10 weight. I think when I change I'm going to try 7.5.

I look at it this way, get what you think you want. If that weight doesn't ride the way you want, change it to another. It's only going to cost around $8 a quart and 30 minutes time.

The only spec I have seen for the K75, K100, K1100 bikes is 7.5 wt - which is what BMW packages and sells with the BMW label.

I preferred 10 wt. in my K75 with the "S" sport suspension.

Thanks for the replys fellows. I think I'll try 7.5 Wt, and see if I can tell a difference. One thing I was hoping to do is to get a faster response to the bumps from pavement joints on the freeway. The quick bam, bam, bam,bam is a hassle, and I think it's something I can tame with enough patience. Also, I need to get rid of the old stock rear shock, as I keep seeing posts on what a big difference it makes to use the new aftermarket equipment. KC

If you decide 7.5 isn't enough, make sure you go 10w in BelRay only...don't switch brands....as that may muck up your comparison...

The K1100RS (and K1100LT) have Marzocci cartridge forks. The left fork controls compression damping and the left rebound. If you'd like the bike to respond more quickly to bumps. use 5 weight in the left fork. They also use different oil quantities: 350cc let, 400cc right.

The standard oil is 7.5 weight.
