My recently acquired '97 GS is illuminationally challenged.
There's certainly enough choices for driving light additions but what's the consensus of the cognicenti? I want better lighting for 2 lane secondary roads and I want to be seen.
What's your choice?Opinion?Reasons?
TIA for all the info I'm about to receive.

There is no consensus. :)

PIAA's: which one? I dunno. They're expensive.

Hella: There are more than a few choices from them. The FF100's are not well liked (they tend to fall apart), but the smaller FF50's are a good bye and I've liked them on my GS. I posted a thread a while back about them and the micatech light bar on my 1150GS. They work reasonably well and can be had for under $75/pair (I've seen them as low as $40).

Lightforce:
These are very neat. You can change the focus of the light to suit your riding needs. You can find them and a bunch of other lights at the micatech site...

If you're really interested in going all the way, you might want to take the Fish route...

You might want to go digging into the threads on lights over on the ADVrider site (http://www.advrider.com/). LOTS of information there - and proof that there is no consensus.

What's the consensus on where/how to mount aux lights so that they don't break the first time you tip over on the trail?

Not on the outside of the crashbars. And I'm not joking. :)

Someone sells a mount(micatech?) that would allow you to use a massive light on the crash bars. Some folks have done it. The only problem, the lights are so big, that they'll be amongst the first things to hit.

Lights as I have mine mounted are really no more vulnerable than the tank itself. - the turn signals, tank, and cylinders will all hit before the lights.

Nice looking installation, Scott. Is that a commercial mount, or something you made from bar stock?

Scott and I traded some mail when I was looking for lights - he was using a Micatech (http://www.micatech.net/products.html) titanium lightbar. I went with exactly the same setup he has, it's nice.

Look before you leap, Jim Shaw.

I wrote a short treatise on my lighting plans for my GS on the R1100 thread before I realized this thread was here.

It says: Micatech titanium light bar, PIAA 1100s on Micatech mounts, and a future Touratech-Hella HID high beam kit. Pictures at 11.

Get thee behind me, Bambi.
