Any paint supplier help for "black",#670?

Well, after dropping the bike in the driveway TWICE now, the scratches on the lower fairing are really embaressing. :banghead I'd like to repaint the whole bike, '93 K1100RS, or maybe just parts, but so far haven't had any luck finding the paint. Under the seat, there is a color #670 sticker, and the bike is Black from a distance, with green/blue metalic when up closer. Does anyone know what this color is called, or better, bought some somewhere? Two local auto paint supplies don't want to touch it. I haven't tried the dealer yet. I did check the IBMWR tech color listings, but don't see 670 there. :brow KC

I went through this myself not too long ago. Before you buy anything confirm that it is a motorcycle that the code is for. I don't know about BMW but Honda uses the same paint code number for bikes and cars. But they are for completely different colors.

i disagree. my '91 black has a green tent in it. I realized this when I was trying to paint a repair I made on the front fender.

Jeez, you obviously have never matched paint. I'd bet that any paint supply house has at least 50 different paint formulas listed as some kind of black. My old Suzuki was "Stellar Black", my 442 was "Midnight Black", Dodge used to have a black called "Event Black" maybe a reference to a black holes event horizon.
And the list is endless...

In that case, I'd say "screw your painter" and go with Krylon "Black". :brow

KC, I had a really good painter I grew up with tell me that if I was matching a small section of a metallic black or grey paint, I was better off having a good paint shop match my paint with their opti-prismatic-laser-gonkulator thing-a-ma-bob. The reason being dark colors fade and dark colors with metal flecks fade at different rates due to the minute difference in quantity of metal flakes from one batch to the next. If it matters, it will take years for paint that is ordered by the "code" and made by the "formula" to match the original paint that has been exposed to the elements for a number of years.

If you're painting the whole bike, no big deal. If you're painting a section, you may want to match what you have so that it wil, uh, match. :wave

I have had horrible luck with those things at the paint shop I use. They just can't get metallics right.

Maybe they need a new opti-prismatic thingee. Or better help. Or maybe I need a new paint shop.

The color code sticker under the seat references the paint scheme for the entire bike, not the individual panel/wheel/etc colors.

Go to one of the online fiche services, look up your bike, then look at the "painted parts" section. Ususally the paint is shown (even if NLA) with the correct Glasurit number.

For your bike K1100RS in Classic black #670:

The paint listed is: 51919062529 metallic lacquer classic black (250ML 162)

162 is the paint code. Any Glasurit dealer should be able to look it up and mix it.

I will follow up on all the sites mentioned to see where they lead. :thumb Funny how there's always conflict, and I thought I was clear that it wasn't "simple" black, but has metalic in it. I agree, even plain black is not easy. white is always simple, ....until you put it next to a whiter white... same kind of situation with black. Anway, now i have something to go on. :whistle KC

I had some scratches on my Honda and I bought a bottle of matched touch up paint from them for $20. Just tell them the paint code and they can mix some up for you. The paint is a urethane base coat, so if you decide to spray it on it will need to be clearcoated in order for it to look good. If you just have some small scratches, the touch up paint has a brush built into the cap.
here's what I've done in the past on my Honda I touched up: I had to go to the paint shop and buy some urethane reducer so I could spray it through my air brush that I use for model airplanes and stuff. You could also go to a hobby shop and buy a "make your own spraypaint" kit for about $25. Some specialty auto tool shops and catalogs sell a refillable spray can that would work too.
I cleaned, prepped, and masked the surface and sprayed it.
Then after it had dried overnight I sanded it with squares cut from a paper grocery bag which is equal to about 1500 grit sandpaper. Then I sprayed it with Krylon Clear enamel.

The results are really good considering I'm not a painter. You've got to get within a couple feet in direct light to tell that I touched it up.
