Well, I'm excited. For the first time ever (except for a shopworn Ducati 500 20 years ago), I'm about to take delivery on a brand new bike. I've had 23 others in various stages of life (theirs and mine), but never one that's factory fresh.

My choice: a Cosmic Blue K1200R Sport -- and it may be here by the weekend!

A stock photo is attached. I'll send some more pix when MINE arrives.

I just had to tell somebody. (Now I've got to tell my wife :-) ).

I just had to tell somebody. (Now I've got to tell my wife :-) ).Cool! I did the same this year.. bought the first new bike I'd gotten in 31 years (at this rate - I'd be 92 for the next one..) and as far as telling the wife - good move. I'd rather ask forgiveness than permission..

Enjoy! The K1200R Sport has been called the best BMW made to date.

Hot ride man. Congratulations - just remember to go easy on the throttle...unless of course you got clout with the local LEOs.

I am picking up the exact same bike on Monday in Daytona. Riding it about 600 miles home the same day.

Enjoy this fine machine,

Gravity

You bought my bike ... you bought my bike.

I hope they will make more than one so I can get one some day.

p.s. Also on the list: R1200R, F800GS (along with everybody else)

Congrats!
I love the colour. I just bought the same bike in grey [that's all that was available] and I'll be driving down from NB Canada to NewHamshire on Monday to pick it up. In the meantime, I'm feeling totally pumped, and I'm an old guy.

Thanks, fellas. It feels terrific to join a great group of fellow travelers (on K12R-Sports, that is).

As I noted in a separate posting, I took delivery last Friday, Nov 2nd. As it happens, I got the White Aluminum Metallic color (or lack thereof). I hemmed and hawed about the silver and blue schemes but, in the end, thought I might tire of the "flashier" blue in a few years. Of course, every time I see a blue one now, I wish I'd stuck with my original choice. Oh well -- I'll probably end up painting the bike black ten years down the road anyway.

What a wonderful machine -- almost the perfect combination of sport and touring attributes with very little compromise in either. This has got to be one of BMW's best ever.

As for "lettin' 'er rip" -- well, we've got a little while to go in the break-in period, so I've only had her up to about 95 so far (briefly). Absolutely solid!! The slightly long wheelbase may make her a little less "flickable" than pure sports machines, but -- man -- what a secure ride she gives on the DC-area super slab. We'll definitely be seein' you in Wyoming -- no sweat!

Yup, the bike smells new. I keep it covered at all times when not riding to preserve the heady aroma.

And, I'm still married. I must admit, there were some tense moments when even the "don't I deserve a little happiness in my twilight years" plea was squelched with derisive laughter. She advanced the typical female arguments about fiscal responsibility and financial security and "maturity" and dumb stuff like that, but all ended well. Hey, she bought a nifty little F650CS for herself a few months ago, so all I had to do was justify the insane expense of this particular bike, not the whole concept of motorcycling.

Now, I need a name for the beast. My lovely old K75S was "Red Sonja". This bike is definitely not feminine, however. Maybe "Ernst" or "Odin"?

Suggestions?

How do you like to windshield? Quiet?

Do you think it will be enough for touring?

You know, that's even more beautiful than the blue. How many miles do you have on her already?

Work has been intrusive this week, so I've only gotten to put about 300 miles on the new bike. I hope to remedy that this weekend so I'll have enough for my 600 mile service late next week. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

As for the windscreen -- it's certainly much more useful than the one on my K75S, but -- to tell you the truth -- I've never ridden a full-fledged touring machine, so I can't compare it with that. I'm going to guess that a hardcore long-distance iron butt would want a little taller aftermarket windshield or augmentation of some sort. The stock unit is fine with me, though. It attenuates buffeting quite a bit but allows enough relative wind impact to maintain the adrenaline rush.

I test rode a new K12R this summer. Unfortunately, I was in the city and never managed to use more than 3rd gear even though I was on an arterial highway.

After the ride, my face hurt because I was grinning so hard.

That thing is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast! The power curve kicks in at about 4000RPM.
I have never flown jets from aircraft carriers, but I have a feeling that that bike will approach those limits.

Ride safe, and love every mile of it!

Now would be a good time to cultivate some good attorneys who specialize in speeding tickets.

In that you seem to like to use color in your names, how about "Silver Streak"?

Now let see...Ernst...like in Ernst Udet, the famous German flying ace of WWI,

Odin is Norwegian for King of Gods, right?

What is your wife's first name?

Maybe we can link your wife's name to a mythological being or an aspect of German cultural history.

My mother always wanted a mink. My father bought boats. So throughout the years, we had "Bea's Mink", followed by "Bea's Mink II", all the way out to V. Many years of no minks but lots of boats.

Well, as an old Naval Aviator I can tell you that nothing feels like a cat shot but, as you know, cracking the throttle open on the K12R-Sport certainly provides a more than respectable rush. In fact, the primary reason I bought the bike was to, at least in some small way, simulate the kick-ass thrust of a high performance aircraft. At my age (61 next week) this is, shall we say, more than adequate. It's a wonderful bike and it sure makes me grin, too.

Y'know, Ernst is precisely the name I've been considering most seriously for my new steed. I hadn't thought of Ernst Udet, though. Y'know, he served as a motorcycle messenger before applying for flight school in WW I. He got interested in aeroplanes while recuperating from an on-duty bike accident, if I recall. Good choice! Thanks, ultracyclist!!

What did you fly in the Navy?

Mostly McDonnell F-4J Phantoms. I grew up in a suburb of St. Louis about six miles from the McDonnell Aircraft plant at Lambert Field (where many of our neighbors worked). So, as a boy, I got to see the evolution of military jets right over my head (Banshees, Demons, Voodoos and, finally, Phantoms). That's how I got keenly interested in airplanes. I was determined to become a Naval Aviator in the tradition of my mother's two brothers who both flew in WW II --and are still with us. They were, and still are, my heroes.
