Here's one more. Nice day trip over to Devils Tower. You can look at the map and see, there is like maybe five or six loops that you can do! All nice roads. Here is one short one. You can take I-90 East or HW14/16 East to Moorcroft,WY. Then take HW16 to Upton. From there take 116 up into Sundance,WY(yes, the Sundance kid) Now from here you can take HW14 west up to Devils Tower Junction. Nice Road with some outstanding shots of the Tower. Or you can go east from Sundance to Exit 199 HW 111 Aladdin,Wy turn off. SIDE TRIP East on the frontage road like four miles to the Buffalo Jump! This is a kill site that was used for many many year. The bottum of the pit is time line before white man cam to North America. OK, bake to the trip. Take HW111 to Aladdin. Then go West on HW 24 ( If you come in from S.D. you can take from Belle Fourche,S.D. West HW34 that is WY 24 in Wyoming) to the town of Hulet,Wy then onto Devils Tower Road and into the park. Then back out to HW 24 West to Tower Junction. Then West on HW 14 Back to Moorcroft,WY. Then back to the Rally. Add to the loop by going to Newcastle,WY the up HW 85 to Four Corners then 585 into Sundance! OR from Four Corners stay 85 to S.D.85 to 14ALT which is Spearfish Cannon road. Then Go Spearfish,S.D. up to Belle Fourche then West HW 34! So, be safe and go have some fun!!:D Richard

OK, last one from me today. Gillette take HW 59 South to Wright,WY then just South to HW 450 East. If you need to cut it short take 116 North to Upton. Or stay 450 all the way into Newcastle,WY. If you have time stop in at the Mill for some pie.:D From there go west HW 16 to Moorocroft,WY then yes, West to Gillette. Now from Newcastle you can see from a map, you can pick up more loops!:D Ride safe, Richard

This is about the most constructive, useful thing I've read yet about the rally in Gillette. Congrats for some great info and thank you! :clap :clap If you have mileages for any of these routes that would help. But even more important - how far do you have to go for some good fly fishing for trout? :D

I've fished Grey Reef and the Miracle Mile are which is near Casper about 2 hrs away from Gillette. Probably the most productive fishing trip I've ever taken.. Plenty of fish and all of them trophies. We didn't catch a fish under 18-20 inches.

But even more important - how far do you have to go for some good fly fishing for trout? :D Ok, I'm on my way out the door to go home. BUT here. If you just have to, here in Gillette is a fishing lake. All so down in Wright at the restarea. Here is one Blueribbon stream that is a small spring creek. It is in the Black Hill, at Beula,WY. That is East of Gillette all most at the state line and off of I-90. Go South at Exit 205. You will pass over the spring creek just before the exit. Yes, I said Blue ribbon. It is hard to fish as it is a spring creek. And 68 miles to the west is the Big Horn Mnts. Lakes and Small rivers/streams. and Yes, The rest of the state. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!:buds Later Richard

Here in Gillette, we have two nice pools if you get to Hot. One is the out door City pool up on the hill, by a nice city park with lots trees. The pool is open to all and is free!!! It is more of what I would call a Kids pool, but with a diving board I do be leave, but you may like to look it over. The Big pool is at the Rec center. The recenter is a full rec center with all the stuff. Hand ball, weights, and indoor track. Its down town off of HY59. It has a Big indoor lap size pool all so with diving boards. On the out side is a Big water slide for all to enjoy. The weather has to be good and temps I think over 70 degrees for the slide. Don't laugh some Summer days some years don't get to 70. One year for the Nationals high school finals rodeo, It was a cold summer and the people from the south had to buy jackets for them and blankets for there horses. and there was Snow up on the Big Horns in July. So, It can Happen. Also Here in Gillette, we have two Golf courses and One indoor putt putt Golf with batten cages. There is a small museum called the Rock Pile Museum to go see. It has a little bit of history about the town. Some nice parks in town. You can get on I-90 and go out to your big lake east of Gillette, which is a State Park called Keyhole State Park. Go boating, fish, swimming and party. Yes they have overnight camping out there if you like. :) Richard

I have already said something about the Buffalo Jump between Sundance and Beulah,WY off of I-90. Here is a BIG indoor site. This Is a must see if you like this sort of thigh. It is in the Black Hills. Hot Springs, S.D. From Gillette go East to Newcastle then stay East on HW 16 into S.D. to Custer. Then go South HW 385 to Hot Springs. Then to the Woolly Mammoth site. http://www.mammothsite.com/default.htm You may also like to try the Evens Plunge indoor pool. http://www.evansplunge.com/ So Have fun!:brow Richard

Ditto on this one!

Most of these 18 inch + trout are brook trout! I've fished Miracle Mile a few times, and always left with my limit! ymmmmm 1

Ok, there is a lot of History here in the Area. Cheyenne-Deadwood Stage, Oregon, and the Bozeman Trails are all here in this area. The Bozeman Trail came up just South West of Gillette, and crossed now what is HW 387. Up along the Big Horns and into Montana. There where a lot of Indian battles in this Area. From Gillette, Go west to Buffalo,WY. Or you can take HY 14/16 North out of Gillette and loop around to the base of the Big Horns. Over there try 194 to Story,WY. Here is Fort Phil Kearny, and also the Wagon Box fight of 1887. Do stop in at the Wagon Box INN for a nice meal. Look all around Buffalo and Sheridan Area it is rich with history. Ever here of the Johnson County War! Now for a big loop. Try HW14 North to Sheridan,WY then I-90 North into Montana. Tell you get to HW 212. This is at Custer's last stand the Little Big Horn Battlefield. After you see that take HW 212 East to Broadus,MT. Then South on HW 59 back into Gillette,Wy. Well thats one more thing to do and see.:D Richard

Rharrod,

This summer I took the first exit I came to heading west from the camplex on 90. I took a dirt road EXACTLY 25 miles west on I-90 off an exit, then led a hundred yards or so to a dirt road that meandered east up and over some substantial hills. It was not marked private, but didn't exactly say "come in" but I assume in western egress tort law this means it's ok to ride! Wide and rolling, no houses steep in spots but had a view to die for of the beautiful high prairie surrounding Gillette and looking west towads the Bighorns.

I rode it about 8 miles, then turned back, but would love to add this one to your list IF it's a legit road that won't get a bunch of Beemers in trouble if we were to ride it in mass!

Do you know where the heck I was? What’s your thoughts?Where does it go?

Do you know where the heck I was? What’s your thoughts?Where does it go? Hi Red, mmmm, I will have to take a look at maybe a County map. There are some dirt County Roads open. County Roads will be ok. There is one from Gillette North West up to Arvada a long side the Railroad tracks. It maybe somedays before I can take a look, Im working four 14 hour days into three 12 hour night shifts. Maybe someone will jump in and help! Maybe someone will find it on the internet. Yes, there should be some Dirt/paved Loops as well. Here is one. I-90 west to the Powder River rest area. Then go North to Arvada. :wave Richard ------------) (NOTE. The road from Gillette, along the tracks. I have found out that the public access has been taken away, by one of the ranchers up by Arvada. SORRY)

There are lots of things to do and see in the Black Hills! You know about Devils Tower, Mt. Rushmore, and Crazy Horse. You know of all the cool roads in Custer State Park. :thumb Now did you know about all the Caves? If not and its hot out side and your in good shape, your in for a treat!!! Try Jewel Cave Nat'l Park. From Gillette, Go to Moorcroft,WY then take HW 16 past Newcastle into South Dakota. I'm thinking its only 18 miles in side S.D. to the cave is all. Yes on HW 16 all the way. If you don't like that one. You can go South from Custer,SD on HW 385 to Wind Cave, if you like! As you see with all the loops and stuff to see, one can do alot all in the same day and return back to Cam-Plex in a day!!!!:nyah Richard

If you make the trip out here. If you do nothing eles, you have to do Beartooth and Chief Joseph scenic highways!!!! Let me say it one more time. You need to make this a part of your trip! From here in Gillette, you can make it a day trip. :D Most of you will need maybe two.:nyah From Gillette, I make this trip 13 hours with lot of stops and over a hour at Red Lodge,MT for lunch. If this is your first trip, take it slow to soak it all in.:thumb I Do this trip, in combo with the Big Horn Loop. So this is what I do. Take HW 14/16 North out of Gillette. Then at Ucross take HW 14 into Sheridan. Then I-90 up to Ranchester. Take HW 14 up top of Big Horn Mtns, to Burgess Jct. Now from here take 14ALT down into Lovell,WY. From here you need to stay on 14 for like three miles west tell you get to 114 north for ten miles. Then go North into MT on HW 310 for 25 miles, tell HW 72 South, pay attion it comes up fast! Stay 72 11 miles to Belfry,MT. Now take 308 West into Red Lodge,MT. Now, take lunch! Down town is Red Lodge pizza.:eat Then after looking at all the shops and stuff. Time to get back to it! Take 212 up the Beartooth Pass. :usa This will put you back into Wyoming. Down 212 to HW 296 and take this South, this is Chief Joseph HW 46 miles of nice!:thumb You will come out at HW 120, go South like 20 miles to Cody,WY. This maybe a good place to stay the night and take in all the Buffalo Bill stuff. Now if you need to stay at it, and run for Gillette. Go East on 14/16 across the high desert to Greybull. Then South on 789 to Basin and on to Manderson. Here you need to take 31 towards Hyattville. At 15 miles is the turn off to go to Ten Sleep,WY 20 miles. Now you come out here at HW 16 just west of Ten Sleep. OK For the ones that took in Cody here you go!!!!! For you, you need to go south from Cody. Take 120 south through Meeteetse,WY, at about 20 miles out from there you will see 431. Take it,yes take 431 East. It will come out at 789. From there go North into Worland,WY. Unless you would like to go see the HOT SPRING STATE PARK at Thermopolis,WY that is. It will come out at 789. From there go North into Worland,WY. After you get to Worland take HW 16 to Ten Sleep,WY. OK Now you should be all back with me! At Ten Sleep stop for a drink,:buds now then back to it and up Ten Sleep Canyon. Up all most to the top is Meadowlark lake. On the east side is a nice paved parking spot. Get back on bike and make it up to Powder River Pass, then on down to the town of Buffalo,WY. Now, after all this. You get to get on I-90 expressway to Gillette. I hope you liked this one. Yep this sucks.:nyah Richard

This is for the GSers, Ok. I will start with some roads up in the Big Horn Mountains. Red Grade RD. Start from the town of Big Horn,WY. On the way this may be a good time to see Fort Phil Kearny it is a Nat'l Historic Landmark and has a State Museum as well. The whole area has a lot to see. It has lots of history as the Bozemen Trail went threw here! You must stop in and see the town of Store,WY. At Story there is a trail head. The Penrose Park trail. I have not been up it in years. But dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, horse back and hikers use it. It would be a tough trip on a GS I'm thinking. Also you would need to get a Permit to do so!!!!! Now on up to Big Horn. From Store,WY take HW 87 North to Big Horn. ( This maybe no help, but on 87 north part way up is a dirt county road that will take you to Big Horn. Ya I know. It's a road I take but I just can't think of the name. Sing will say to State Bird Farm, Maybe someone will know the name. ) At Big Horn Go West. At the Nat'l Forest it is road NF26 Red Grade road. This Road will take you up top of the Big Horn Mountains. If you take it all the way, you will come out on HW 14 just South of Burgess Junction. Up there I would go right and go up to Burgess Junction and stop in for a drink, Gas or a bite to eat. From there take NF15 road loop North. This loop will take you around to HW 14ALt. Now from there you may as will go right and stop over at the Medicine Wheel site. Yep, just something more to see!!! After that Take 14Alt back to Burgess Junction. From there You might take HW14 down throw Shell Canyon and see the water falls. I'm NOT a GSer, SO I don't know how you would be on time at this point. Maybe you can do a big loop and come out just South of Buffalo,WY. Back threw Shell Canyon and down to Shell,WY. Just past Shell on the way to Greybull,WY is a road called the Red Gulch Natl. Scenic Byway. This will take you South to Hyattvill,WY. From there stay South to Ten Sleep,WY. Stop have a cold one and maybe gas.Now your at HY16. Head back up the Big Horns and over to Buffalo,WY. On this rout you GSers may like to take NF31 that is a small loop back out to HW 16 on the way down the East side to Buffalo. Or at Ten Sleep, if you still have the time. Out from Ten Sleep there is a road that will take you up back side of Ten Sleep Canyon and up to NF32. Take NF32 North and all the way out to HW 16. From there go East down to Grazy Woman C.G. to NF33. Go on NF33 all the way down the Big Horns to HW 196. Now it maybe very late, so go North to Buffalo,WY and I-90 back to Gillette,WY.:thumb Now as noted before I don't know the time on this. But I think that it would be a fun trip. It maybe a two day trip also if you need time to look around a bit and you will. You just may have to stay a night in a camp ground up in the Big Horns. Now that would just be a pain.:rofl There is a lot more roads up there to see. I just hope, this will help you with a idea or two. Richard :rocker

Take it South to the town of Arvda,WY. From there go South on the Dirt. The road should take you down to where the Crazy Women Creek comes into the Powder River. If you stay south with the Powder River you will come out at I-90 at exit 88 the rest area. Go West to Buffalo,WY. If you did not go south, stay with the road and follow Crazy Women west and out on top. this will take you out to I-90 Exit 65. From there go West I-90 to Buffalo,WY. At Buffalo take I-25 South. Stay South I-25 for like 10 miles or so to Exit 291. From here go east. This will be the dirt road that along side the Bozemen Trail. Take this all the way back down to the Powder River. In this Area here is Fort Reno Historic Site. Stay on the Road on into Sussex,WY. Here You will come out at HW 192. Take 192 South threw Linch,WY ans onto HW 387. Now take 387 East to Pine Tree Jct. OK, you can make up loop trips to no end here.;) AS you all get here to the Black Hills area, STOP and pick up one or two of the local Black Hills maps!!!!! This map is FREE. The map will show you most of the roads in the WY/SD Black Hills Area.:usa One trip you should do is from Four Corners. That is 18 miles North of Newcastle,WY on HW 85. Form Four Corners go East on the dirt to Deerfield,SD. So take road 810 to 110 into SD to Deerfield then East to Hill City,SD. That is a nice ride.:bolt Here is a Loop in Wyoming Black Hills that you can take, and also stop by Devils Tower. This could also be a fun trip. (Red, take fly rod ) From Gillette go to Moorcroft,WY. At exit 153 go North on dirt. This road will take you up to Oshoto,WY. From there you can go East and come out at HW 14 then East to HW 24 North to Devils Tower. Now back at Oshoto,WY you can keep going North, this will be the back side of Missouri Buttes and the Tower. Stay north to New Haven,WY. From there the road will swing to the East and bring you out at the pavement at Hulett,WY. From there you can go South 10 miles to the Tower, if you like. Now here is just some more dirt roads that you should know about. These roads will take you up into the N.F. of the Northern Black Hills. Just North from the Tower is road 847. Just South of Hulett,WY is 849. Now back at Hulett go east on HW 24. to you get to Alva,WY. One more road here is 859 South up in the Hills. Or keep East on HW 24 anothere 5 or 8 miles is road 838. Take 838 if you like all the way to Sundance,WY. Now if you don't take all the way South, take road 843 east that is up top still. Go 843 East down to HW 111. At 111 go South, tell you come out at I-90. There on the North side is a frontage road. Take the frontage road East. Now then between here an Beulah,WY is the Buffalo Jump PIT. Stop and take a look, your there anyway! Then on East to Beulah,WY. Here, also Exit 205 off of I-90 is a Blue ribbon trout stream. ( Red, still have your pole) Go South from here on road 863 it follows Sand Creek, that is a Spring Creek. Some good, but tough fishing is here in this spring creek! Now take 863 south to 141 to 875 into SD. Now in SD it is now called 175, stay on 175 witch passes over HW85. Stay on 175 onto you get to 231 south then to 117 south to 110. From here at 110 if you go East you will end up at Deerfield,SD. But you will go West back into Wyoming, tell you get to 810. 810 South is Bever Creek Road. Stay South 810 to you come out at HW 16. Go West to Newcastle,WY. Stop by the old Mill for some pie!:eat Now, after your full of pie. Go West HW 16 back to Moorcroft,WY. Yep then back West to Gillette.:laugh This is just one of lots, to see and do here in the Area! Richard

Let me add some roads that I think you may like. For some of you they may not be in your rout here because of your location to get here. If you can try theses. HW 28 over South Pass. HW 191 in and out of Utah. HW 130 over Medicine Bow Pass. Hw 34 from 30 over to I-25 North of Laramie,WY I like this little road. HW 487. HW 26 and see Fort Laramie. HW 85 from South to North. HW 116 all of it. You can make loops back to Gillette. HW 24. also HW112. HW 431 it's a nice short cut. Out from Powell HW 294 is all so a nice little short cut. HW 31 then South to Ten Sleep is a good Short cut around the back side of the Big Horn loop. First and most is have fun and Keep the good eye out for all the Wide life!!!!! The hole Area around here has very good ans scenic riding for All. There are many more roads to be had here. I do think that there are more MOA members that can put in many more places to see and do here. So add your rides here any time.:stick I'm sure that we all will enjoy them. Be Safe,:lurk Richard

Richard, thanks for the input, keep them coming.

I have never ridden out west, flown over on my way to Vegas a few times.

Gillette is going to be great, I have wanted to visit Devils Tower ever since I saw Richard Dreyfus make one out of mashed potatoes in Close Encounters of the Third Kind...

My riding buddies and I are excited about coming out (we need paved roads, strictly road bikes, no dual purpose..)

If your coming from Ontario, you may want to include the North Dakota Badlands in your route. They are one of the Wests best kept secrets and regularly bypassed by travelers. After the tragic loose of his wife, Teddy Roosevelt moved west to the solitude of Medora, where he cattle ranched. From that experience, he went on to known as a conservation president (although he loved to kill the critters) designating large sections of the America West into national parks.

If you've read Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (maybe you've heard of it) you can follow the route through North Dakota on Highway 11 slipping down through Mobridge following highway 12 west before dropping down to Gillette.

By the way, while in Jasper last summer, I parked next to a RED GS that looked like Neil Peart's bike (Drummer for Rush). As it turned out, it was purchased from Neil by a financial wizard named Peter from Toronto. Peters a colorful character. Maybe you know him? We went on to the Hyder seek afterwards and had a great time. We then parted way since I was heading north to Dawson and the Arctic Circle in Northern Yukon.

Kenk,
I've been to the Badlands a number of times. I agree with Kenk, it is a great sight to see. However, I thought the Badlands were in South Dakota; not North Dakota? When did President Bush move them via Executive Order?

Funny guy. There's a South Dakota Badlands near Rapid City (best known) and a North Dakota Badlands just west of Dickinson. Although their official names are the Theodore Roosevelt National Park North and South Units, the locals still refer to them as the North Dakota Badlands. The names changed many years ago. I should have referred to them as the Theodore Roosevelt National Parks to avoid confusion for out of stater's -- another Dakota saying. When you get there, you will see they are very similar to the SD Badlands.

My favorite of all the Badlands is Theodore Roosevelt North Unit just south of Williston. I camped their several years ago and woke up with a heard of buffalo in my campsite. Deep gorges and beautiful landscape.

Kenk,
Thanks for the information about the North Dakota Badlands at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Based upon your information, perhaps I'll get there this upcoming summer either to/from Gillette WY. Even though I've complained about the Gillette site selection, I plan on attending the '08 nat'l rally. I hope I'm wrong about Gillette, as well as the North Dakota Badlands.

Now yer talkin'. I have done some of that, wondered about some more, and maybe even know a few roads you haven't mentioned. In fact, as you add routes, the prospects for this rally just get better and better.

Just a quick note to let you all know that the Black Hills BMW Stampede (http://www.blackhillsbmw.com) is the weekend prior(July 13 - 15, 2008) to the International Rally, so you can explore the Black Hills with other BMW riders and attend a great rally to boot! The website isn't updated yet, but will be soon. If you look in your September 2007 Issue of BMW ON there is a nice write-up about the rally! There is also talks about having an organized ride from the Black Hills BMW Stampede rally site to the International rally site. Put er' on your calenders folks, it's a good one!

Alright, bought the bike, joined the club, now a suggestion. For those of you who can ride gravel there is a road from Sundance over the Bear Lodge & Warren Peak, and down the north side to Devils Tower. Great views from the top on clear days.

Another suggestion is head east just north of Sundance towards Moskee/Cement Ridge area & on to Spearfish/Lead/Deadwood. Again, all gravel.

PLEASE be careful with fire, cigarettes, anything that will start fires! It has been very dry there for a few years and it doesn't take much.

SheRidesABeemer & aterveen_1487,
According to National Geographic's "Guide To Scenic Highways and Byways" the Big Horn Mountains Scenic Byway on US (not WY) Route 14 between Shell & Dayton Wyoming is a very scenic 2 hour (by car) 60 mile trip going through Granite Pass @ 9,033 feet, following the Tongue River, with scenic turnouts for Sand Turn Pullout, Little Tongue River Canyon, & Fallen City limestone rock formations, with an hour detour on US 14A to Medicine Wheel (not included in the 60 miles above). US 14 Scenic Byway also goes through Shell Canyon and Shell Falls Interpretive Site, following Shell Creek before heading across a desert floor to Shell, Wyoming. According to Google Maps, Dayton is about 125 miles from Gillette WY. The above would be a great 400 mile (return trip from Gillette to Shell via Dayton & back to Gillette) day ride for riders attending the Nat'l Rally in Gillette. The pictures speak for themselves ... beautiful.

If your an American citizen over the age of the 62, you can purchase a lifetime pass good for all national parks for only $10. It's called the America the Beautiful pass. It used to be called the Golden Age pass. No other requirements except age.

However, if your retired military with 20+ years of service, multiple combat tours, with VA acknowledged combat related disabilities, you don't qualify. You pay $80 a year, just like our foreign visitors. What a country!!

As an alternative to US16, take Crazy Woman Canyon road from near Kaycee up to intercept 16 without having to go all the way to Buffalo. Not for the gravel-averse, but a very nice ride. Also, there is a very nice ride (unpaved) that goes from 14a near the Medicine Wheel over to the upper end of Shell Canyon (US14). Along the way, you can open a gate and ride down to Moonlight Mesa, which gives some spectacular overlooks of Shell Canyon.

Medicine Wheel is now a half-mile walk from the parking area, but if you are going to ride trails past there, the ranger should let you through the gate to ride right up. The Medicine Wheel is a true place of power. In 1993, I had a hilarious brush with fame up there, wherein I heard first-hand a story that Peter Fonda subsequently incorporated into his part in "The Limey".

Some of my favorite rides in the Gillette, Wyoming area.

The Beartooth loop is a 2-1/2 day 2 night loop (leisurely pace) that would be tough to beat anywhere in North America. The track file is part of my 8,350 mile loop with my 11 y/o son in June 2006.

I would spend night 1 in Red Lodge, MT and night 2 in Cody, WY. This loop can be done in 2 days and 1 night if you leave at sunrise on day 1.

The Blackhill Loop is also one of my favorite. I usually include Hot Springs and Wind Cave National Park, but that turns this loop into a pretty long day so I included the waypoints, but dropped that section of my loop.

And the Devil's Tower loop which includes Custer's Last Stand is another favorite.

How about a good route to Yellowstone? I'm in a quandry as to whether to take a more northerly scenic route such as 14 to 14A into Cody and then 296 to 212 into Yellowstone. I could add an out and back to Bear Tooth Pass. That might be too much for one day. Alternatively, I could take a faster route of I-90 east to Buffalo then take 16 to Greybull then follow 14 to Yellowstone. Or perhaps some combination of the two. I will do this ride on Sunday then camp in Yellowstone for the night before I head back to Colorado. Any suggestions?

depends on how fast you want to get to Yellowstone...

if you want the coolest route, take I-90 past Sheridan WY to US-14, then 14A, US-310 to just south of Bridger MT. left on MT-72 to Belfry MT, then MT-308 to Red Lodge MT.

Beartooth Highway (US-212) to Silver Gate MT (Yellowstone NP northeast entrance).

Taking 14A is also a great road with much greener backdrops. At the West end of the ride you should do the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area. Get to the Canyon overlook parking area just into Montana. I've always seen plenty of bighorn sheep in the parking area and never a person.

You could even rent a speed boat for an hour or so and enjoy the canyon from another perspective. Take a look at the canyon in google maps or google earth. It is well worth the trip and a great road too.

Oh, and it is also home of the National Wild Horse Preserve to boot.

See you all there. Can't wait.

Anyone coming up from the south through Nebraska should look at Hiway 61 north out of Ogallala. Lots of hills and curves, yes hills and curves. We once made the 165 miles to Martin South Dakota in just over one and a half hours, saw 4 cars. The Nebraska Sand Hills are HOT so mornings or evenings are best. Some livestock and ranch trucks and very few gas stops. If you are in the touring mode keep going north to Kadoka, South Dakota then west through Badlands National Park. Did I mention it will be HOT! If you haven't traveled west remember that gas stops are often 30 to 50 miles apart so watch the reserve light.

Early design for a day ride from Gillette > I 90 hoof it on the slab to Sturgis, and come back the scenic way. Approx 280 miles on the route + slab Gillette > Sturgis early am
More accomplished Mapsourcers and those who know the area, would appreciate your thoughts.
If you wish I can email the Mapsource file
Apologies for pic size/definition, not an expert in these matters

From Sundance take 585 to Four Corners, 385 to Cheyene Crossing then 14A down Spearfish Canyon. Take the slab to Sturgis and then Vanocker Canyon, it starts right at the BMW dealer. When you get to Nemo go about a mile south, take 208 back to 385 south into Hill City. 244, Mount Rushmore road to Keystone, 16A, you'll get hit up to pay a park entrance fee, then 87, Needles Hiway, to Sylvan Lake. 89 down into Custer, west on 16. Best Roads the Black Hills have to offer. Lots of tourists, RV's, etc. but great roads and scenery.

+1 Twoslowwheels

I did 2/3 of those roads last year during my very first extended bike trip. Amazing scenery.

I would have been heading back there this summer even if the rally wasn't in the area.

If you decide to venture over to Mt. Rushmore, DO NOT ( I repeat ) DO NOT miss the Needles Highway. When you come down the Mountain from Rushmore, turn left and go aprox 1/2 mile and turn left onto Needles Hwy. keep your camera handy. those of you that have ridden this road, know what I'm talking about:thumb

I plotted in 2slowwheels route into Mapsource and it lists Vanocker as a dirt road, yet the road is listed on the Sturgis Rally page as a good ride and the photos show pavement. I can't see many Harleys venturing down a dirt road and I will ride on dirt for a bit but not too far.

Is the road paved, and Mapsource has old info? The photos don't look like new pavement.

I have version 6.13.7 and the latest data - City Navigator 2008.
That said, I have no idea how to tell if a road is dirt or see photos.....:dunno
I plotted the BMW dealer from their coordinates which I looked up on the web and they are on Vanocker Canyon Rd.

Vanocker Canyon has very nice pavement, so nice you tend to ride it a bit faster than you should if you don't know where the real tight curves are.
Needles Hiway (87) and Iron Mountain Road (16A) are two roads not to miss, as well as 85 from the S. Dak./Wyo. border down through Spearfish Canyon (14A).

If someone has gone to the trouble of creating a couple of day trips around Gillette on Mapsource, would they consider posting them for use ?
Thanks in advance, beer in exchange :beer
The Garmin "gpx" file I posted several weeks ago should help you plan any number of great routes.

Garmin Mapsource "gdb" files are not "legal", but "gpx" files are legal.

Vanocker Canyon has been paved for several years now.
