its not square on the clutch end like in the shop manual. Its pointed or conical. Not conical with a step like 1981. Do I have a problem?

Square? Sheez, I didn't know that existed after about 1954. They had a simple point from then through 1980, when they got the thin pilot tip added.

Hey captbilly,
Check the other end of the shaft before you do anything else! :D

simple point is what I seem to have. thanks
just finished putting it all back together after having final drive splines rebuilt.
Now the clutch slips! Seems fine at all slower speeds, then lets go just before redline at c. 6800 rpm.
I adjusted clutch to specs, then tried it a lot looser to see if that might help. No luck.
Clutch was having no trouble before.
Is another teardown all I can do?

Did you disassemble the clutch? If so, it might slip for a while but it'll stop. BTDT. Otherwise, you may have used too much lube when you reassembled it.

no, didn't open the clutch. removed transmission to clean and lube splines, then reassembled.
maybe got too much lube in there... was careful tho...
first slip was in top gear, going wide open, just before red line
next time was on a hill nearby, not very steep, in 4th gear at top rpm.
It will stall the engine if I set brakes, run it up to 5000rpm, and engage the clutch.
I wanted to ride it to Seattle for tgiving. 80 miles round trip. Don't know if I dare...
thanks for reply
