When I used to lay my bike up for winter all I'd ever done was to jack the bike up and secure it elevated so that a flat spot didn't develop. I know people who don't even do that (as far as tire precautions go).

why would you consider lowering tire pressure?
fwiw- never did anything special for tires. maybe put the bike on c-stand, with boards underneath to limit likelihood of flat spots- but for a layup that's measured in weeks/months, no, i wouldn't really bother.

... and when you refill should you use Nitrogen?...

OH NO. Not here too.

The nitrogen in tires topic has been beaten again and again on RV.net (a forum for RV owners). It has never been actually proven to be any advantage. Remember that the air all around us, and the air in compressors is already 78% nitrogen. If discussion continues about nitrogen, invariably someone else will suggest filling tires with helium to make a bike weigh less! :D

I just read an article in Hemmings Motor News last month that said Nitrogen inflation was a way to help mechanics make thier boat payments. Its a rip-off.
