Hi all,
I am posting this for a fellow club member.

He has an 03 K12GT that has a loud rattle at idle that seems to be coming from the rear of the engine, front of the tranny area. If you squeeze the clutch the rattle stops. We have tried holding onto the exhaust, plastic skirts etc and can not find any loose items on the under side of this bike. rev the engine slightly and the rattle stops. It does not matter whether you are stationary or in gear.

Trans shifts smooth.

Any thoughts or suggestions.

Is it possible that there is a loose spring on the pressure plate that could cause this? My mind says no but....

TIA

Roy

I forget some how it sounded, but that sounds like the "box of rocks" sound that we all had, have, on the K1200RS. Lots of words about it on the K forums back then. It was caused by two selected fit gears in the output of the engine. No issues other than sound.

I have K1200GT 03 also. Have a “knock” at low idle. Does not matter weather or not the cultch is pulled in or not. At my 30K service I had the dealer check it out. Mind you it is a very quiet knock. They told me it was normal due to the lifters being hydraulic. At resting idle there is a small pressure drop. For the year and model this is normal. As you say at speed and shifting everything is perfect. Good luck!:D

Interesting about the hydraulic lifters. That'll be the day...

Jack,
thanks for the reply. This must have been discussed before I became a Beemer Bum.

…. Well .. As Jack has commented … without explanation … he must be the “expert”…. Lucky for us there is always someone smarter and who knows it all!

Sorry. :D It's just funny...the reasons dealers/techs give for stuff.

I do know, however, that BMW sent out a bulletin about the gear rattle in about '98 or '99. Some K12RS/GT's had it loud and some very soft. Viki and I had three of those bikes and they all had it, but all different. I can't say that your or the other bike's knock for sure is gear rattle, but we don't have hydraulic lifters. I wish we did when it comes to valve checking time.

No problem... anyway your right .. I have heard others "knock" and yes different. Even if it is "normal" I still don't like it. Take care

My dealer set the idle speed to minimize the knock ( before they went out of business ). Seemed to be a matter of finding a spot where it is less noisy. I hear it when the engine is cold but really do not notice it when fully warmed up. Others have said it is the alternator drive or driven gear, I have not found out yet and hope to never know for sure...

..and you'd better stop riding your K immediately and send it to me so that I can put it out of its misery and bury it.

JK!I have an 04 KGT.It makes the same box of rocks sound. See JK's post on the subject,I THIMK that's what he was talking about. The sound means nothing.
