After reading the latest BMWON article about the various release bearings (internal/external) that BMW has used, I have three questons:

1. What type of release bearing is in my 02 R-1150 6 sp?
2. What type of release bearing is in my 97 R-1100 5 sp?

I lubed the splines on the 97 last summer @ 25,000 miles, they looked good but were dry. I used antiseize (sp?), I will use Honda Moly next time.

3. Given the age of the 02 (6 years) and only 27,000 (I bought it with 17,000 this summer and am putting on miles as fast as possible :) ) do I need to lube the splines based on age?

Is there any PM to do on the release bearings?

TIA

I didn't read the article - busy relocating back to Texas - so I'm not sure of the nomenclature used in the article.

But - the clutch release bearing on the 1100 5 speeds is located inside a bored recess at the rear of the transmission that aligns with the center of the transmission input shaft and crankshaft.

To access it you remove the lever attached to the back of the transmission, loosen the little clamp, and remove the litle rubber boot. Then withdraw the next piece from the back of the transmission.

As far as I know it is in the same location on the 1150 6 speeds but I've never had to go looking. In 640,000 miles on our R1100s and R1150 neither Voni nor I have ever had one go bad.

I would think that an 02 with 27,000 miles would not need a clutch hub spline lube. But my 03 with about 65,000 miles did this spring. Certainly if you encounter any difficult downshifts that is a pretty sure sign. Might make a good "winter" project. You pick the month. Maybe January. Maybe July.

Welcome back to Texas!

Thanks for the information. I would much prefer to lube/relube things rather than buy new ones.
