The last BMW I owned was a 1995 R100RT Classic and it was a dog. I was told that either you got a good one or a bad one of the last year of the airhead. I have owned R90 S, R90/6 and Still do own a R75/5 toaster. I have found a 2002 R1150Rt with 19k on it. It just had the 18k service done on it. It has new tires and brakes. It has the PIAA lights on the front forks and pullbacks and lowered pegs. I know nothing of the Oilheads but hear a lot of good stuff. Any insight would be appreciated. I can get this bike for 7,500. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Barry

I bought my 1150RT new in 2002 and it has been a great bike. Short trips, long trips no matter, its good on all. I have put a Sargent seat and Aeroflow windscreen on it along with highway pegs for my personal taste. Mechanically it has been perfect, never a single issue. With the heated grips and power outlet for a heated vest my temperature range for comfortable/enjoyable riding has expanded greatly.

Issues you'll hear about are "surging" and complaints on the linked brakes. Neither have been an issue at all for me. I love the brakes and have been saved by them more than once.

I normally don't keep a bike this long but this one has been so good I plan to keep it for the foreseeable future.

Hope this helps and good luck with your choice.

Jay

And by the way, I think you've found a very reasonable price too.:usa

I think he's found a steal! $7500 for an RT with only 19k miles? That's a deal!

Hi- a"newby" here. Not to hijack this thread, but how is the R1100/1150RT for two-up riding? Would have to add a backrest.

I have an 1150RT and do ride 2 up. It works pretty darn well, plenty of grunt to get you moving once you get it rolling. It's pretty doggy just starting out and feels like 1'st is just a tad too "tall" on the 6 speed transmission. Be prepared to use plenty of throttle starting out and you should be fine.

I have an '00RT and an "04GS. Love 'em both. For two up my ST1300 is best.

I think the RT is great for 2 up. One of the reasons I got it.

Thanks for all the help and insight. I pick the bike up Friday. I had it checked by the local BMW dealer and he gave it thumbs up. Will keep you posted and I do appreciate all the advice.

Absolute a steel at 19000 miles. Been riding for over 30 years. Had a R1100R, R1200C montana (still have) a R1150R and a K100LT and a K100RS. This R1150RT is just a darn great machine. I rode this bike 1570 miles in 22 hours and I could of never done that on any other motorcycle. It is sport/ touring/ one up, 2 up, want you want this bike to do it will do. I must say I did make the bike for me however, but I feel if you don't do that to every bike it just doesn't fit you personally. I have switched out the seat/barbacks/GPS/sirius radio/radar detector/illium sport boards/and a cee bailey windshield. Oh I also chromed the heads and put a set of elf pegs on it for comfort. I am in the process of installing a chip and a laser exhaust.
